For the first time in its ninety year history, legendary Steinway Hall will be used to record a CD. On Sunday January 22, Jazz great David Benoit will record all of the tracks for his new CD in Steinway Hall’s Rotunda. The piano Benoit has chosen to play is one that has previously housed at Avery Fisher Hall and was favored by classical heavyweights Emanuel Ax , Yefim Bronfman and Lang Lang.

Since 1977, David Benoit’s expansive career as a contemporary jazz pianist has included over 25 solo recordings. Among his ‘80s releases, This Side Up, Freedom at Midnight and the Grammy-nominated Every Step of the Way are considered influential genre classics. Among his other Grammy nominations are those for Best Instrumental Composition (for “Dad’s Room,” from 1999’s Professional Dreamer) and Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance (for the GRP All-Star Big Band). His prolific output also includes several prominent Charlie Brown related projects (Here’s To You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years and the star-studded 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas), reflecting his lifelong passion for the music of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi and solidifying his own role as Guaraldi’s musical heir.

July 2023 set to be world’s hottest month on record

July 27 (Reuters) – July 2023 is set to upend previous heat benchmarks, U.N. Secretary-general António Guterres said on Thursday after scientists said it was on track to be the world’s hottest month on record.

The U.N. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service also said in a joint statement it was “extremely likely” July 2023 would break the record.

“We don’t have to wait for the end of the month to know this. Short of a mini-Ice Age over the next days, July 2023 will shatter records across the board,” Guterres said in New York.

“Climate change is here. It is terrifying. And it is just the beginning,” he told reporters, adding “the era of global boiling has arrived”.

The effects of July’s heat have been seen across the world. Thousands of tourists fled wildfires on the Greek island of Rhodes, and many more suffered baking heat across the U.S. Southwest. Temperatures in a northwest China townshipsoared as high as 52.2C (126F), breaking the national record.

While the WMO would not call the record outright, instead waiting until the availability of all finalised data in August, an analysis by Germany’s Leipzig University released on Thursday found that July 2023 would clinch the record.

This month’s mean global temperature is projected to be at least 0.2C (0.4F) warmer than July 2019, the former hottest in the 174-year observational record, according to EU data.

The margin of difference between now and July 2019 is “so substantial that we can already say with absolute certainty that it is going to be the warmest July”, Leipzig climate scientist Karsten Haustein said.

July 2023 is estimated to be roughly 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) above the pre-industrial mean. The WMO has confirmed that the first three weeks of July have been the warmest on record.

Commenting on the pattern, Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, said it was clear by mid-July that it was going to be a record warm month, and provided an “indicator of a planet that will continue to warm as long as we burn fossil fuels”.

Normally, the global mean temperature for July is around 16C (61F), inclusive of the Southern Hemisphere winter. But this July it has surged to around 17C (63F).

What’s more, “we may have to go back thousands if not tens of thousands of years to find similarly warm conditions on our planet”, Haustein said. Early, less fine-tuned climate records — gathered from things like ice cores and tree rings — suggest the Earth has not been this hot in 120,000 years.

Haustein’s analysis is based on preliminary temperature data and weather models, including forecast temperatures through the end of this month, but validated by unaffiliated scientists.

“The result is confirmed by several independent datasets combining measurements in the ocean and over land. It is statistically robust,” said Piers Forster, a climate scientist at Leeds University in Britain.

HOTHOUSE PLANET

Sweltering temperatures have affected swathes of the planet. While night-time is typically cooler in the desert, Death Valley in the U.S. state of California saw the hottest night ever recorded globally this month.

Canadian wildfires burned at an unprecedented pace. And France, Spain, Germany and Poland sizzled under a major heatwave, with the mercury climbing into the mid-40s on the Italian island of Sicily, part of which is engulfed in flames.

Marine heatwaves have unfolded along coastlines from Florida to Australia, raising concerns about coral reef die-off.

Even one of the coldest places on Earth – Antarctica – is feeling the heat. Sea ice is currently at a record lowin the Southern Hemisphere’s winter – the time when ice should soon be reaching its maximum extent.

Meanwhile, record rainfall and floods have deluged South Korea, Japan, India and Pakistan.

“Global mean temperature (itself) doesn’t kill anyone,” said Friederike Otto, a scientist with the Grantham Institute for Climate Change in London. “But a ‘hottest July ever’ manifests in extreme weather events around the globe.”

The planet is in the early stages of an El Nino event, borne of unusually warm waters in the eastern Pacific. El Nino typically delivers warmer temperatures around the world, doubling down on the warming driven by human-caused climate change, which scientists said this week had played an “absolutely overwhelming” role in July’s extreme heatwaves.

While El Nino’s impacts are expected to peak later this year and into 2024, it “has already started to help boost the temperatures”, Haustein said.

July is traditionally the hottest month of the year, and the EU said it did not project August would surpass the record set this month.

However, scientists expect 2023 or 2024 will end up as the hottest year in the record books, surpassing 2016.

GLASTONBURY, UK — About 15,000 people gathered at Glastonbury’s monumental stone circle for making the world’s biggest human peace sign as a “message of peace to the world” thus setting the new world record for the Largest human peace sign according to the World Record Academy.

The Guinness World Records world record for the largest human flower consists of 2,405 participants, and was achieved by the Asian Art Museum (USA) in San Francisco, California, USA, on 15 July 2017.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest human image of an ear; it consists of 1,215 participants and was achieved by Raindropss and Sathyabama University (both India) in Tamil Nadu, India, on 3 December 2016. e

Organised by the team who run Glastonbury’s green fields as a “message of peace to the world”, the attempt broke the previous world record when 5,814 people performed a similar stunt at Ithaca festival in New York in 2008.

Among those taking part were Emily Eavis and William Hawk, a Native American from the Standing Rock reservation.

Beth Llewellyn, who was behind the record attempt, said: “I thought: ‘Why don’t we get together in the fields, and make this sign around the stone circle with people whose intent is for peace and not to be threatened by the few? We’re just doing it for love.”

MATZOBALL hosting largest online speed dating event ever held

NEW YORK, New York – (December 17, 2020) – MATZOBALL has shattered the Guinness World Record for the largest speed dating event. The MATZOBALL Online, to be held on Christmas Eve 2020, already has 1154 people registered to participate, with many more expected to register before the event begins. The event starts at 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be held virtually in 23 cities across five countries. The virtual record is the first for MATZOBALL, which has held the dating party annually since 1987.

“This event has been so well received,” explains Andrew Rudnick, from Mazel Events, LLC and founder of the MATZOBALL. “We are all excited that this will be the largest and most successful speed dating event the world has ever seen. Not only can people get an opportunity to meet their soul mate, but they can also be a fun part of making this historical record.”

The current largest speed dating event, according to Guinness World Records, took place in Dublin, Ireland, on February 14, 2019. The number of people who participated in the Valentine’s Day speed dating event was 964. The MATZOBALL Online speed dating event has already surpassed that number in terms of how many people have registered to take part. The number will continue to climb as more people register each day leading up to and on the event day.

Each year, MATZOBALL holds its famous Jewish singles holiday party, giving people a chance to meet others. Some people have met for just that one fun-filled night, while others have developed long-lasting romantic relationships and friendships. Each year, there are over 400,000 people who attend the MATZOBALL holiday party.

This year, due to the pandemic, the event will be held online using special technology that will allow thousands of people to engage in a speed dating event at one time. While the speed dating event will be held online, participants are encouraged to still dress up to put forth their best image. The event will feature Regional Video Speed Dating, which will include pre-screened eligible singles. All of the speed dates will be held in a one-on-one setting.

The MATZOBALL Online will be broken down by region and age range. Each person who registers for the speed dating will get a minimum of 20-30, 5-minute dates. During that time, they will have the opportunity to choose whom they felt they had a connection with. When there is a mutual connection shared, the two people will be notified via email 15 minutes after the event ends. This will give them an opportunity to explore the connection more.

Tickets to the event are $35, plus a $5 processing fee per person for the Christmas Eve event, and $55, plus a $5 processing fee for the professional’s speed dating event on Christmas Day. A combination ticket to participate in both events can be purchased for $75, plus a $5 processing fee. Age ranges people can choose from are 21-27, 28-35, 36-49, and 50+. MATZOBALL will also be hosting a LGBTQ Jewish speed dating event on December 24, 2020, at 9 p.m. Space is limited, and tickets are expected to sell out. Tickets are $35, plus a $5 processing fee.
