Hello Paul,

It was so nice meeting you today and thank you so much for filming us and helping us get our message out there! This is an organization I am very passionate about and have been a chair person for this event for 3 years now. This event helps raise awareness to people who have been affected by cancer. Everyone has been affected in some way and this event brings hope to those battling and remembrance to those lost. My inspiration for this event was watching my beautiful mother battle cancer. Watching her go through pain, surgeries, radiation, and numerous medications made me realize how important it is to cherish life and to finish your fight. I am so thankful and proud of my mom for fighting this terrible disease and proving to me how strong people are. My mom has been a survivor for over 6 years and has taught me that there is hope that we can put an end to cancer. On June 6th at Howell High School, survivors, teams, and the community come together to remember their loved ones lost, celebrate the survivors who defeated this disease, and fight back to prevent cancer from affecting people’s lives in the future. During this event we walk around our high school’s track and stay up all night to simulate the experience of what a cancer patient goes through; constantly feeling tired, exhausting, and never ending. We set up onsite fundraisers, themed laps to walk during the night, fun games and the most memorable and touching part of the night is the luminaria ceremony. In this emotional ceremony we write special messages on white bags to those who are battling or remember those who have been lost. These bags are then lit with candles and lined along the track. During this, all the lights are turned off and we walk a lap in silence to reflect on how this terrible disease has affected all of our lives. I hope that people realize that they can make a change to help fight cancer. Even a dollar can help change the outcome of this terrible disease.

I need your help. This is the second year I have had the privilege of participating in the UN Foundation’s Global Mom Relay. This year’s theme is “How has a Mom changed your world?”. From International Women’s Day through Mothers’ Day–March 7 through May 11–a celebrity or community leader, from New York to Nairobi, will share a personal story of how a mom has changed his or her life, and then “pass the baton” to the next person.
