This week we celebrated Earth Day, an annual reminder that protecting our planet is not just an environmental challenge, it is fundamental to the future of our city. Everything we do will be impacted by the rising costs of extreme weather and our response to it.

This week my office released a series of reports, each designed to help us strengthen the physical systems and infrastructure that keep our city green – like trees.

Listen to “New York City Comptroller Mark Levine” on Spreaker.On Tuesday, the Parks Department announced a laudable goal to increase natural street and parks coverings to 30% of the City by 2040. But while tree planting has been funded through capital budget initiatives, maintenance and upkeep is an operational cost that has not kept pace. Compounding the issue is the lack of a dedicated funding stream specifically for tree maintenance.

In a new report, New York City’s Living Infrastructure, my office outlined ways for the City to realize its plan to expand tree canopies in the five boroughs, including generating more revenue from Parks Department concessions to fund their care.

We also have opportunities to improve our organics waste management, particularly in schools. The Zero Waste Schools Program was launched in 2016 with the goal of diverting all recyclable and compostable waste that our schools produce. What started as a pilot of 100 schools has grown to include all schools, which are now all required to separate compostable waste from regular garbage.

But while every school participates, a new review by my office has found that only about one-third of waste is currently collected and diverted from landfills.

As Comptroller, I will continue to advance a disciplined, data driven approach to climate risk and opportunities, one that protects the pensions systems, strengthens infrastructure, and ensures New York City remains resilient and competitive for generations to come.Sincerely,

100 years from today, for example in 2122 all of us will be underground with our relatives and friends.

Strangers will live in our homes. Our property will be owned by strangers.

They will not even remember us. How many of us think of our grandfather’s father. We will become part of history in the memory of our generations, while people will forget our names and shapes.

At that time we will realize how ignorant and deficient the dream of getting everything was. We would ask for one more life to spend it only in doing good deeds, but it would be too late.

Keep in mind, today we have the opportunity to do good for ourselves and others. The only thing that will remain forever is our good deeds in this life and the life hereafter.

We still have time, Do good deeds before it’s too late !!!

“We need more Ray Korona songs!” We hear this a lot from people struggling to survive the Trump regime. It is ­striking how many of his songs are more relevant today than ever. “It’s Still the Sixties” for sure. Ray wrote songs about jobs, Social Security, health care, war and the nuclear brink, water, the environment, prisons, ­homelessness, women’s rights and more. Perhaps what we need most now from Ray’s music is his optimistic ­vision of the future. His songs encourage us and empower us to fight back!

Please join us for our third annual concert of Ray Korona songs since he passed away. The band – Ivice, Barry ­Kornhauser, Ellen Davidson, Gina Tlamsa and Sharon Abreu — augmented by Laura Liben and Chris Owens – will ­present a ­number of his songs. Interspersed will be guest performances by Steve Brant, Joel Cohen, Suzanne Cohen, Lydia Adams Davis, Lisa Garrison, Emma Graves, Sharleen Leahey, Adele Rolider, Ben Silver, Steve Suffet, Mercy Van Vlack and Lindsey Wilson.

We encourage you to bring flyers about your activist events. Our program is packed, so we will have extremely limited time for announcements from the stage.
