Paws of War is calling on the public to help show their military support by saving their puppies

NESCONSET, N.Y. – (March 12, 2026) – Currently, millions of Americans are saddened by the news of seven of our military members lost in the war taking place in Iran. It has made many people in the country wonder what they can do to step up and show their support for the troops, regardless of how they feel about the politics of it all. Paws of War is providing people a solid way to help show their support for the troops and help some rescued puppies at the same time, making it a win-win solution.

“We have the utmost respect for our troops, and are committed to doing everything we can to help with this situation,” said Derek Cartwright, U.S. Army veteran and international logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “I know there are many people who also want to help show their support and helping to save these pups is a great way to do it.”

The oil pit pups, as they are being called, were saved by U.S. soldiers and a Navy veteran who were all overseas. When they heard the frantic yelps of nearby puppies, they ran to the scene only to find that two puppies from the litter had fallen into the oil pit that is used for vehicle maintenance and were drowning. The group wasted no time in stepping up to help save the two, and took them and their mother and siblings to a safe place where they can give them the care they desperately needed.

Being left behind in the Middle East, the group of dogs is sure to be severely injured or killed. The group reached out to Paws of War to help ensure that doesn’t happen, asking them to help get them all relocated to America, where they can live out the rest of their lives in comfort and safety with the people who rescued and bonded with them. As a Paws of War in-progress War-Torn rescue, the plans are already being laid out to ensure this mission is a success, but the one thing that it still needs is support from the public.

Missions such as these are costly with a lot of red tape and fees, and they can use all the donations they can get to ensure all conditions are met along the way. There are five puppies that have been rescued, along with their mother, and there are four military heroes who are waiting to adopt them. Members of the public can feel good knowing they are showing their support to our troops by getting involved, as well as helping to rescue some innocent puppies from the harsh realities of the Middle East. The War-Torn Pups & Cats program reunites military personnel with the animals they rescue and bond with while serving overseas. It’s a program that is provided with no cost to the soldiers.

“Let’s all pull together and to see this mission through,” said Cartwright. “We want our soldiers and veterans to know we support them, their efforts, and all the sacrifices they make for our nation every day.”

Paws of War focuses on helping active duty soldiers and veterans in various ways. They have helped relocate the rescued pets of overseas military members. They have helped veterans with numerous issues, including suicide prevention, service and support dogs, companion cats and dogs, food insecurity, veterinary care, etc. Paws of War has a large, loyal following of supporters and looks forward to working with new corporate sponsors to support these life-saving programs.
New Statistics Show Rising Concerns from Parents Around Opioid Epidemic

Dr. Bonnie Milas, professor of Clinical Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has a uniquely personal stake in the battle against the opioid epidemic. After tragically losing two sons to accidental opioid overdoses, she is now on a mission to rally parents and others to be ready to rescue in case of an opioid emergency.

Opioid overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, and many people do not realize opioid overdoses can happen anywhere and at any time, most commonly in our own homes. Naloxone is a medication designed to reverse the effects of a life-threatening opioid emergency and can be used to revive someone during an overdose while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.

Younger generations are particularly at risk for opioid overdose as fentanyl poisonings continue to be on the rise. In 2022, 22 high school age adolescents died each week from overdoses driven by fentanyl-laced prescription pills.

According to a new survey, nearly 9 in 10 parents believe that normalizing the topic of opioid overdose and reversal treatments like naloxone could help save lives, and that a more robust national conversation could be part of the solution.

In addition, 90 percent of survey respondents agree that schools, public libraries, dorms and professionals who work with teenagers and college kids should have access to naloxone. Increased naloxone access could already be making a big impact, as the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recently announced provisional data on drug overdose deaths in 2023, finding there was a 3 percent decrease in deaths compared to 2022.

As back to school quickly approaches, Dr. Milas will be available on July 18 to discuss the “Ready to Rescue” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about opioid risks and educate the public, including parents, on how to be prepared with naloxone to help save a life in an opioid overdose emergency. She will also discuss how her personal experience has fueled her passion for calling attention to the dangers of opioid use in addition to:

The importance of breaking the stigma associated with opioid overdose, because accidents happen

How to talk about opioids and overdose with children, and why parents should always be prepared, especially parents of children going to college

The signs of an opioid emergency and how everyone has the power to save a life.

CAN YOU TELL US WHY THIS IS SUCH A PERSONAL MISSION FOR YOU?

WHAT IS “READY TO RESCUE” ALL ABOUT?

WHAT ARE SIGNS OF OPIOID EMERGENCY AND THE BEST ACTIONS TO TAKE?

IS THERE A STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH OPIOID OVERDOSE AND WHY?

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE PARENTS CAN HELP WITH THIS ISSUE… AND WHERE CAN THE AUDIENCE FIND MORE INFORMATION?

BIO:
DR. BONNIE MILAS

Bonnie Milas, MD, is a mother and clinical professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Milas is an outspoken advocate for those suffering from opioid use disorder (OUD) and is painfully aware of the impact it has as she lost both her sons to the disorder. Through her work locally with the Bucks County Drug and Alcohol Commission and nationally with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), she is an ardent educator of naloxone overdose rescue.

Dr. Milas’ clinical practice involves caring for patients undergoing cardiopulmonary surgical procedures and those in the intensive care unit following surgery. Helping to deal with the ravages of infected heart valves from intravenous drug use, she handles the post-operative management of opioid withdrawal and pain control. Dr. Milas’ writing on saving lives of those suffering from OUD has appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer and USA Today.

The not-for-profit animal rescue organization, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC (RDRNYC) will host their ‘Cocktails for Canines’ annual gala on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm, at Versa, 218 West 35th Street, New York City. The cocktail and dinner reception gala will raise funds and awareness to help animals in need and will be co-chaired by Georgina Bloomberg and Lara Trump.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s goal is to raise awareness of the ever-growing plight of homeless animals in the United States, in shelters as well as those abandoned in the streets. There are way too many fantastic animals that are euthanized every day just because they are homeless. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC introduces these animals to the public and educates them that unwanted companion animals are not damaged goods or unworthy but can be fostered into wonderful family pets. Sadly, the abuse, neglect, cruelty, and medical cases cost shelters the most money, and often are the first animals to euthanized.

Georgina Bloomberg with Rocky (Photo credit: Rescue Dogs Rock NYC)

The mission of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is the rescue of these animals and provide them with immediate emergency care, medical or otherwise, they need and deserve. Besides medical treatments, the animals are rehabilitated through trainers and behavior specialists to help overcome past trauma. The organization does not have a physical shelter, and relies on a network of volunteers, fosters and adopters to welcome these animals into their homes and provides them with a nurturing and caring environment.

The Charity has acquired their own rescue and rehabilitation center in Suffolk County on Long Island giving Rescue Dogs Rock NYC a home to care for dogs in need. This allows the charity to save many more needy and deserving dogs. The center sits on half an acre and allows indoor/outdoor kennels and has lots of outdoor space.

Redevelopment Rescue Dogs Rock NYC Care Facility for which fundraising is essential
(photo credit: Rescue Dogs Rock NYC)

The development of the center is a project which has been 3 years in the making, so Rescue Dogs Rock NYC are excited to have come this far. However, the real work comes in as the center is in disrepair and has no significant upkeep done in probably 30 years. The charity anticipates the new rescue center will cost approximately $350,000 to get it where it needs to be and ready to open and start taking in dogs.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s outreach and education is spread through their website and social media, as well as community events such as their annual gala.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is a 501(c)(3), volunteer and foster based rescue. For more information, visit: rescuedogsrocknyc.org.

About the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of The Hamptons:
The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Inc., Eastern Long Island’s only wildlife hospital, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild animals impacted by human encroachment on their habitat. It is a grass-roots organization that began with a few concerned friends and has grown to include over 3,000 members and supporters. The center operates as a full-service professional wildlife hospital, with licensed rehabilitators, biologists, animal behaviorists, and volunteers on staff. More than 300 people have been trained to help with wildlife rescues. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center is located on Munn’s Pond Park through a cooperative licensing agreement with Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The center is located on a greenbelt of public land parcels that stretches from Tiana Bay to Peconic Bay on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. This ecosystem is one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable, with salt and freshwater wetlands, Pine Barrens, deciduous forest, and meadowland. As a result, it is an ideal location for a wildlife rehabilitation center. The hospital is intended solely for wild animals. There are no ambient noises or smells to stress the wildlife that is recovering within, unlike a veterinary hospital. Every year, the Wildlife Rescue Center receives over 10,000 calls for information or assistance regarding wild animal encounters. In addition, the center offers educational programs to local elementary and secondary schools. Local college students participate in cooperative education programs and internships. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center has an annual operating budget of more than $650,000, almost entirely funded by generous donors.

Here is some background on the Good Samaritan Law from Wikipedia.

Good Samaritan laws offer legal protection to people who give reasonable assistance to those who are, or whom they believe to be, injured, ill, in peril, or otherwise incapacitated.[1] The protection is intended to reduce bystanders’ hesitation to assist, for fear of being sued or prosecuted for unintentional injury or wrongful death. An example of such a law in common-law areas of Canada: a good Samaritan doctrine is a legal principle that prevents a rescuer who has voluntarily helped a victim in distress from being successfully sued for wrongdoing. Its purpose is to keep people from being reluctant to help a stranger in need for fear of legal repercussions should they make some mistake in treatment.[2] By contrast, a duty to rescue law requires people to offer assistance and holds those who fail to do so liable.
Good Samaritan laws may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, as do their interactions with various other legal principles, such as consent, parental rights and the right to refuse treatment. Most such laws do not apply to medical professionals’ or career emergency responders’ on-the-job conduct, but some extend protection to professional rescuers when they are acting in a volunteer capacity.
The principles contained in good Samaritan laws more typically operate in countries in which the foundation of the legal system is English common law, such as Australia.[3] In many countries that use civil law as the foundation for their legal systems, the same legal effect is more typically achieved using a principle of duty to rescue. There is more on Wikipedia.
