ISD Background

By Stephen Jordan

I had an interesting conversation today with a senior corporate executive. As we wrapped up, she said something that made me realize we really need to clarify that the Institute for Sustainable Development is trying to break through with new concepts that the current frame of talking about community shocks and stresses doesn’t take into account:

“It’s a shame you focus so much on disasters.”

At ISD, we actually don’t.

Our mission is grounded in the opposite idea: communities shouldn’t have to endure a disaster to get the resources, attention, or leadership they need to become stronger.

What we focus on is community continuity—reducing the harm from future disruptions and strengthening resilience every single day.

Businesses already understand this. They don’t build “Business Emergency Plans.”They build Business Continuity Plans because interruptions cost money, customers, and competitiveness. Continuity is practical. It’s strategic. It’s how organizations stay viable.

Communities deserve the same logic.

Moving Away From Focusing on Responding to Sudden Shocks to Addressing the Stresses Beneath Them

Too often, we treat disasters as isolated events—wildfires, floods, hurricanes, pandemics—when in reality they are sudden shocks that expose deeper, ongoing stresses:

aging infrastructure

brittle housing systems

fragile local economies

limited access to capital

social and health vulnerabilities

governance bottlenecks

outdated rules and planning assumptions

At ISD, we don’t just look at the dramatic moment of impact. We look at what the shock reveals. We look at the conditions that made the disaster as destructive as it was.

And then we ask the real question:

Why aren’t we working on reducing those stresses continuously?

The Kid Soccer Problem: Chasing the Ball Instead of Covering the Field

Every time a disaster strikes, there’s a tendency for the press and community leaders to act like how little kids play soccer —everyone bunches up and chases the ball.

What if the worst moments of your life held the secret to your greatest success?

Where Do I Sign? From Tragedy to Resilient Triumph is a moving, motivational memoir by David A. Dodd—A global leader in economic resilience, dynamic speaker, and survivor of extraordinary adversity. Through deeply personal storytelling, David reveals how a life shaped by trauma and setbacks became one defined by purpose, innovation, and unshakable resilience.

After a near-fatal auto crash left him with life-threatening injuries and a long road to recovery, he had every reason to give up. Instead, he leaned into five core principles that had guided him from childhood, resulting in personal resilience, faith, and a commitment to service. Along the way, he founded the International Sustainable Resilience Center and helped reshape how communities worldwide recover from disaster and build lasting strength.

This book is a compelling blend of life story and practical principles that will inspire readers from every walk of life. Whether you’re seeking encouragement during hard times or a framework for long-term growth, Where Do I Sign? offers hope, clarity, and an empowering message: you are stronger than you think.

Sign your name to your future. Conquer tragedy with resilience.

Here are the five principles of personal resilience.
1. Learn something, something that interests you
2. In learning about that something, find your passion
3. Pursue that passion, continue to learn about it and experience it
4. Develop a strategy, with specific actions to realize results from that passion
5. Measure your progress and celebrate success, focusing on the future not the past

How many of us can remember a heartwarming story that was read or hard during the past several weeks?
Well, here’s one: (Thank you to Barry Elkins for bringing it to our attention)
(JTA) — (New York Jewish Week via JTA) — In January of 1943, Irma Lauscher, a teacher at the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, smuggled a tree into the camp so that the Jewish children imprisoned by the Nazis could celebrate Tu B’Shevat in a secret ceremony. The children used their water rations to nurture the sapling.

Of the 15,000 children who were imprisoned in Theresienstadt during the Holocaust, fewer than 200 survived. But the tree was still standing when the camp was liberated in 1945, and a sign was placed at its base marking it as a symbol of resilience.

“As the branches of this tree, so the branches of our people!” said the sign under the tree, which survivors named “The Tree of Life.” Lauscher, who survived the Holocaust, eventually was buried alongside the original tree.

In the 1980s, branch saplings were cut from the tree and planted in Jerusalem, as well as in San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia to accompany a traveling exhibit of treasures nearly lost in the Holocaust.

Now, New York City — home to the largest community of Holocaust survivors and their descendants of any city outside Israel — will also nurture a descendant of the original tree. Dr. Roger Pomerantz, a Jewish philanthropist who owns a farm in Pennsylvania that holds seven trees grown from cuttings of the original tree, has donated one to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City.

“The Children’s Tree,” as it will be known, will be unveiled to the public today during a dedication ceremony held jointly by the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Battery Park City Authority. Currently 15 feet tall, the silver maple tree will have a permanent home in the park.

“We want everybody in Battery Park City to be able to walk by and see a piece of history,” Jack Kliger, the president and CEO of the Museum of Jewish Heritage, told the New York Jewish Week. “To not only remember but to understand what resilience means in the face of tremendous odds.”

Calling the project “a labor of love,” Kliger said transporting the tree involved hiring a horticulturist to uproot the tree from Pennsylvania and working with Battery Park City Authority to find the right space for the tree.

As at Theresienstadt, the tree will be cared for by children — in this case, students at PS/IS 276: The Battery Park City School, a public elementary and middle school located just across the street from the museum. In collaboration with the museum, the school will make the tree part of an ongoing curriculum in Holocaust education.

“They were planting a tree that would live in a world that they would not live in, as sort of a physical expression of belief in the future and a form of spiritual resistance,” said Michael Berenbaum, a Holocaust historian who was instrumental in the transplant of the tree to New York, of the imprisoned children who cared for the original Tree of Life.

“Now their legacy can continue,” he added.

“Resilience is represented by both humans as well as trees,” Kliger said, comparing their abilities to survive as well as endure such a long, roundabout journey to New York.

Speakers at the ceremony will include Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. representative to the United Nations; Theresienstadt survivor Fred Terna; Czech Consul General Arnošt Kareš; and Battery Park City Authority President and CEO B.J. Jones. The student choir at PS/IS 276 will also perform.

Your children will face many challenges in the years ahead, so you want to raise them to be resilient—strong, adaptable, and able to recover. It is your mission to empower your son or daughter to cultivate a functional and fulfilling life. This essential handbook will help you achieve that goal. In Resilience Parenting, martial arts instructors Chris and Holly Santillo share the insights they have gained as teachers and parents. They offer positive alternatives to lecturing, bribing, and punishing; focusing instead on three Pillars: Learning, Integrity, and Service. By applying these powerful principles, you can inspire your children to develop the independence they need to succeed as adults while renewing their connection to family and community. Whether you are raising a teenager or just starting your family, the methods prescribed in this book will help you unlock your greatest potential as a parent.

In an interview on your program Chris and Holly can discuss:

• How to empower your son or daughter to adapt and overcome all of life’s challenges.

• How to effectively communicate with your children.

• Teaching the skills necessary for children to interact with the world with success.

• How your children can operate in life from a place of integrity and service rather than bribes and punishments.

• How to inspire children to see the world as an adventure, rather than a series of impossible challenges.

• and much more!

“People say there is no handbook when it comes to raising kids. Not true anymore. Resilience Parenting is it if you want to raise kids who can handle anything!
“As a Special Forces officer and lifelong student of leadership and training, I have spent a lot of time and effort trying to divine what makes a person more resilient. Chris and Holly Santillo’s book Resilience Parenting masterfully distills what they have learned in over twenty years of teaching martial arts and parenting and conveys those lessons in an easy to understand and entirely implementable way. Resilience Parenting is a road map toward the latter. I hope enough parents are smart enough to pick it up.”

“I have known Chris and Holly for a long time. I have watched them teach self-respect and self-mastery in the dojo and then successfully transfer that knowledge to parenting three boys. This type of parenting is worth emulating.”

HOW CAN THEY BOUNCE BACK FROM PANDEMIC PROBLEMS?

Financial resilience is the ability to withstand life events that impact one’s income and/or assets. Some financially stressful events, such as unemployment, divorce, disability, and health problems can affect people in different ways, and it’s clear that many Americans have been facing short-term money challenges brought about by COVID-19.

A new survey shows say the pandemic has changed their perceptions of what’s important in life as it relates to their finances. For example:
	A majority of adults (nearly 60%) say they have experienced financial stress amid the pandemic.
	About two-thirds now want to save more, view emergency funds as more important than ever, and place more value on being resilient.
	One-third had their employment affected.
	1 in 5 had to tap into an emergency fund.
	1 in 4 took on more debt.

But there are strategies to help everyone achieve financial resilience in today’s climate.

Strategies include:
	Increasing retirement savings: Saving for retirement is a top contributor to financial resilience, yet 60% of respondents report they’re falling behind.
	Having a source of guaranteed lifetime income in retirement: 90% agree it’s important to have source of income that will not run out as they age, but most don’t know how to make that happen.
	Building an emergency savings fund: 77% of individuals now report having emergency savings compared to prior to the pandemic when only 69% said they had savings for emergencies.
	Paying down dept: Nearly 65% of those surveyed say they have some form of debt beyond their car or mortgage.

Shelly-Ann Eweka, Director of Financial Planning Strategy at TIAA to discuss strategies of how Americans can focus on long term financial planning, especially during periods of economic uncertainty. She’ll also reveal details of the Financial Resiliency Survey.
