Cheap green tech exports out of China are starting to substantially change the economic development trajectory of some countries, Somini Sengupta and Brad Plumer report from Belém.

“China has sought to cast itself as a pillar of global stability,” they write, “particularly after the Trump administration said it would withdraw the United States from the annual climate talks.”

The result is that drivers in countries like Vietnam, Nepal and Ethiopia are opting for electric vehicles over combustion engines, and places all over the world have begun installing solar arrays made with Chinese equipment.

Yet much of China’s clean tech manufacturing boom has been powered by a parallel expansion in coal, so its emissions have continued to increase.

But the rapid pace of China’s clean energy installations may be flattening that curve: its emissions are projected to rise by just 0.4 percent this year, or even fall slightly, Plumer reports.

Forever chemical test results in North Georgia alarm scientists

CHATSWORTH, Ga. (WDEF)- A group of environmental scientists in northwest Georgia say recent test results of forever chemicals in North Georgia have them alarmed.

PFAS Georgia at a town hall in Chatsworth says that the majority of tests for forever chemicals across North Georgia have tested above the EPA limits.

They say 56% of water samples, 69% of soil samples, and 97% of dust samples all came back above the limit of 4 parts of forever chemicals per trillion (PPT), which scientists say can lead to a variety of health issues.

In particular, the most egregious results were:

A water sample of 186,310 PPT
A soil sample of 2,154,100 PPT
A dust sample of 879,500 PPT

The Water Resources Manager for PFAS Georgia, Bob Bowcock, said that some of the readings were so high their testing equipment could not register a reading.

PFAS Georgia says this is the result of the improper discarding of chemicals from carpet manufacturers, many of whom are facing ongoing lawsuits in Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, and Gordon Counties.

Bowcock gravely said, “I think that we are at the point now where you have to tell your neighbors. You have to let them know. Whether they’ve been tested or not this is real, and if you’re drinking 850 parts and you don’t tell your neighbors… It’s really eating at me.”

A proposed bill in the Georgia House of Representatives that was proposed by Dalton representative Kasey Carpenter that would have shielded carpet manufacturers from lawsuits did not pass.

There will be another town hall Friday night in Calhoun, Georgia.

Geographic atrophy (GA) is the advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and a leading cause of blindness for which there is currently no treatment. The disease, which causes progressive and irreversible vision loss, affects more than 5 million people worldwide, including one million people in the United States.[1],[2]

A recent global Geographic Atrophy Insights Survey (GAINS) of 203 adults with GA found the condition causes a profound emotional burden and loss of independence. Key highlights from the survey include:
• Three out of four people attributed their loss of vision to a natural part of aging prior to diagnosis.
• A majority feel the disease has negatively impacted aspects of everyday life such as the ability to drive, read and travel.
• Nearly 70% of people with GA believe the loss of independence and impact on quality of life due to their vision loss is worse than they expected.
More than 90% of patients wish to be empowered with more information to help them take control of their disease. These findings underscore the urgent need for education to prepare patients and their loved ones for this debilitating disease.

With approximately 38 million Baby Boomer American women in their mid 40’s to mid 60’s entering a new stage in their lives, it’s no surprise that health issues are one of their top concerns. From retirement to leisure, they are redefining all aspects of what getting older means and are looking for ways to take control over health conditions that interfere with their everyday lives. Yet, a recent landmark study reveals that at least one third of women in this generation suffer from one or more pelvic health conditions, but many suffer in silence because they lack the knowledge to ask about treatment.
Now there is a new education awareness campaign being launched on June 19 designed to arm women with the tools and knowledge necessary to overcome this problem. In addition, results of the new study, the first-ever research on this area of women’s health, will be revealed.

Researchers gave thousands of dollars to homeless people. The results defied stereotypes. – CNN

A man walking through a Vancouver tent city in March. Researchers in a new study found that homeless people who received direct cash transfers were able to find stable housing faster.

(CNN)You’ve heard this refrain before — giving money to homeless people is not the best way to help them because it might be squandered, or spent on harmful habits. But a new Canadian study makes a powerful case to the contrary.

The study, dubbed “The New Leaf Project,” is an initiative of Foundations for Social Change, a charitable organization based in Vancouver, in partnership with the University of British Columbia.

Researchers gave 50 recently homeless people a lump sum of 7,500 Canadian dollars (nearly $5,700). They followed the cash recipients’ life over 12-18 months and compared their outcomes to that of a control group who didn’t receive the payment.

The preliminary findings, which will be peer-reviewed next year, show that those who received cash were able to find stable housing faster, on average. By comparison, those who didn’t receive cash lagged about 12 months behind in securing more permanent housing.

People who received cash were able to access the food they needed to live faster. Nearly 70% did after one month, and maintained greater food security throughout the year.

The recipients spent more on food, clothing and rent, while there was a 39% decrease in spending on goods like alcohol, cigarettes or drugs.

“The homeless population continues to grow, and we keep applying the same old approaches,” said Claire Williams, the CEO and co-founder of Foundations for Social Change.

“We really think it’s important to start testing meaningful risk-taking in the name of social change,” WIlliams added.

The 115 participants in the randomized controlled trial were between the ages of 19 and 64, and they had been homeless for an average of 6 months. Participants were screened for a low risk of mental health challenges and substance abuse.

Funding for the initiative came from a grant from the Canadian federal government, and from donors and foundations in the country.

“Moving forward on their own terms”

“One of the things that was most striking is that most people who received the cash knew immediately what they wanted to do with that money, and that just flies in the face of stereotypes,” Williams told CNN.

For example, she explained some cash recipients knew they wanted to use the money to move into housing, or invest in transportation — getting a bike, or taking their cars to the repair shop to be able to keep their jobs. Others wanted to purchase computers. A number of them wanted to start their own small businesses.

“People very much know what they need, but we often don’t equip them with the intervention or the services that really empowers them with choice and dignity to move forward on their own terms,” Williams said.

Not a ‘silver bullet,’ but a useful tool for many

Direct cash transfers are not “a silver bullet for homelessness in general,” and the program focused on “a higher functioning subset of the homeless population,” Williams said, but she believes the research shows that providing meaningful support to folks who have recently become homeless decreases the likelihood they will become entrenched in the experience.

People who received the cash infusions were even able to set some money aside — about 1,000 Canadian dollars on average through 12 months.

The money provided by the program also had “trickle down impacts,” according to Williams, with people investing more in their children’s well-being and needs, as well as helping out family members.

“There are these hidden impacts that we just don’t anticipate and aren’t necessarily quantifying, but now we’re seeing that this is having an exponential effect on people’s lives,” Williams explained.

The study shows there are advantages for the taxpayer, too.

According to the research, reducing the number of nights spent in shelters by the 50 study participants who received cash saved approximately 8,100 Canadian dollars per person per year, or about 405,000 Canadian dollars over one year for all 50 participants.

“There’s a common misconception that the cost of doing nothing is free or cheap and it absolutely is not,” Williams said.

Homelessness and the pandemic

The risk of homelessness looms large for many across the United States, as people deal with job losses and economic uncertainty brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re hearing that from homeless providers in a lot of places, people who have never been homeless before are coming into shelters and have no idea what to do,” Steve Berg, a vice president with the National Alliance to End Homelessness, an American nonprofit organization, told CNN.

“It’s a brand new experience for them, and they never dreamed that when they’d be talking about homeless people they’d be talking about themselves,” said Berg, who was not involved in The New Leaf Project study.

Innovative solutions to the issue are even more pressing right now. Berg thinks the research confirms what is true for many people experiencing homelessness: money can solve it.

“There are certainly people who are homeless who have deeper, more severe problems,” Berg explained, “but for many people, it’s simply a matter of — they ran out of money, lost a job, fell on hard times, became homeless. Once they’re homeless, it’s very difficult to get enough money saved up in order to find a place to live.”

“People can be relied on, if they get the money upfront, to take care of the problem themselves,” Berg added.

The proposal will authorize bonds to fund live feed satellite coverage into every fire station in the state to cut the response time of our honorable firefighters and increase speed and accuracy of advance warning to affected citizens.

2. PROBLEM.

At present most firefighters are on call. Based on research, firefighters too frequently lack access to the latest data regarding fire movements. This results in unnecessary delays for the firefighters to reach critical areas. It also results in firefighters not being able to alert citizens in a timely and efficient manner.

3. SOLUTION.

This proposal addresses the need for immediate live feed coverage into every station so that the firemen can carefully monitor their geographic area. Surveillance will include computer signaling of potential trouble spots to be investigated. In response multiple approaches can be initiated including surveillance drones, alerts through smartphone apps or live crews for additional protection.

A New Study Reveals How to Fill a Vital Gap In Infant Gut Health
New research is showing that a specific probiotic bacteria is key to restoring a baby’s gut to its protective, natural state and providing a foundation for life-long optimal health.
When babies are born they begin to acquire a collection of bacteria called the microbiome –trillions of microorganisms that co-exist in our bodies and live all over us, on our skin, nose, mouth, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, or gut. Research shows that the infant gut microbiome plays a critical role in healthy immune and metabolic development, as well as meeting babies’ dietary needs.
