Each year on July 27th, the U.S. Army celebrates the Army Medicine Anniversary. The Army Reserve is a unique and significant contributor to the Army’s overall medical system. The Army Reserve began as a small corps of medical professionals in 1908 and has evolved into what is now the best trained, best equipped, and most ready Army Reserve in our Nation’s history. Most notably, 55% of all Army operational medical forces reside in the Army Reserve, including two deployable medical commands, the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), Salt Lake City, Utah and the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), Atlanta, Georgia.

Today, the U.S. Army Reserve is home to over 60 percent of the total force’s critical care nurses, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians and obstetricians. The Army Reserve provides the active Army with 306 medical units.

Many Army Reserve medical Soldiers have skill sets that are honed by their respective civilian jobs, from specialized physicians to surgeons, offering every capability needed in order to deploy and complete medical missions. The Army Reserve also works with top medical facilities in the country to remain on the cutting edge of research and education and provide unmatched capabilities and responsiveness.

The Army Reserve assists the active Army and the community in times of need. Army Reserve medical units support stateside missions, which provide real world opportunities for Soldiers to administer medical, dental and optometry care in underserved American communities.

Maj. Gen. Joe D. Robinson, Commanding General, 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), discusses the role of the Army Reserve medical capabilities in recent history at home and outside of the Continental United States.

As Martha and the Vandellas once put, “They’re dancing in the street in Chicago, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore and DC now…can’t forget the Motor City…Across the ocean blue, me and you.” The music of Motown traveled around the globe, landing on the other side of the world in Sydney, Australia, where four high school students—brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney, Phil Burton and Toby Allen—were more interested in soul, gospel and harmony groups than their country’s usual obsession with “guitars, grunt and good old rock and roll.” Forming a singing group that began as a tribute to their love of a cappella doo-wop, the foursome was directed to the music of the legendary label by a music teacher. That was 22 years ago. Today, Human Nature are Australia’s leading pop vocal group, having released nine albums (many containing their own, self-penned original material), five of which went to #1 in their native continent, selling millions of records world-wide and garnering 23 platinum awards, 70 Top 40 hits and five Top 10 hits. The group has opened for Celine Dion and Michael Jackson in Europe and Australia. Their chart-topping Motown tribute, Reach Out, went five-times-platinum, attracting the attention of famed songwriter Smokey Robinson, who recorded “Get Ready” with them and presented them in an exclusive booking at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace, where they have played five and six nights a week to sold-out crowds for the past two and a half years. Having inked a comprehensive worldwide deal that includes merchandise, sponsorships and endorsements, ticket/music bundling, touring and corporate gigs with Universal Music Group’s Universal Music Enterprises (they remain with Sony in Australia), Human Nature are ready to tackle America, and carry the legacy of Motown music for a new generation. The first release under the new agreement will be The Motown Record, featuring 11 soul classics plus a bonus track, including “Get Ready,” the band’s collaboration with Smokey Robinson, distinctive doo-wop versions of “Ooh Baby Baby” and “Just My Imagination,” as well as the Four Tops’ “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and “Baby I Need Your Loving,” the Temptations’ “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight,” Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street” and the Supremes’ “Stop in the Name of Love.” The versions are faithful, yet updated and freshened, everything we’ve loved about them renewed and revitalized, performed and arranged by four guys who clearly love to sing and harmonize on these particular songs. “There is such beauty in the original material,” says Phil Burton. “We didn’t want to make a carbon copy of the songs, but we didn’t want to change them into something they weren’t, either.” “We put our stamp on these songs by the way we sing them,” explains Andrew Tierney, who is the one with the highest pitch, with brother Mike and Phil in the middle, and Toby on the bottom, trading leads according to whose voice best fits the track. “We wanted to keep the magic by maintaining the energy and fun. It was a learning experience to immerse ourselves into the arrangements, like taking a lesson from the masters.” Human Nature Sings Motown, a special telecast of the group’s Las Vegas state show filmed by longtime Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich, will be at the center of PBS’ fund-raising efforts in December, featuring an appearance by Smokey Robinson. Ehrlich enthused about working with the band: “When you hear their versions of the great Motown classics, you’re not only reminded of the greatness of the originals, but you hear nuances that bring those originals up to date without tarnishing them in the least.” A DVD version of the show includes 40 minutes of bonus content featuring the band discussing Motown’s enduring influence with the label’s legendary songwriters Lamont Dozier, Eddie and Brian Holland, all of whom have given their blessings to Human Nature, as well as more than 20 minutes of performances not shown in the original broadcast. Both CD and DVD are exclusive to PBS subscribers through December before being available at retailers in March 2012. Smokey Robinson, who has nurtured the band and is actively working with them to reinvigorate the Motown brand, says: “The members of Human Nature are extraordinary vocalists who truly now how to entertain and I knew that they would be hugely successful….” “He’s such a big supporter and it’s just fantastic to have him give his stamp of approval for our take on his music,” says Michael about the legendary performer/songwriter/ producer. Adds Andrew: “Every time we do something with Smokey, we’re constantly reminded of how lucky we are to have him as a good friend and mentor. It’s been a career-changer for us.” “I’m still pinching myself,” admits Toby. “Smokey has no need to get involved with something like this if he doesn’t want to. He obviously loves the music, and that’s the greatest satisfaction for us.” “We were always concerned with what guys like Smokey, Lamont Dozier and the Hollands were going to think, but we’re doing this out of a pure love for the music,” adds Phil. “We’re going back to our roots, the songs we’ve been performing since we first started.” And now it’s time for Human Nature to conquer America with its own music. “It was a huge gamble,” reveals Andrew about their decision to come over for a two-week stint at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, where they saw first-hand that their Motown show connected with stateside audiences. “Why should people listen to four white Australians sing these songs when they’re ubiquitous on radio and TV? It just shows that this music is written for everybody, and that it has reached to every corner of the globe, including Australia. And it’s still influencing people, just as it touched us.” Human Nature’s many accomplishments include performing the Australian national anthem at the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, and performing on Oprah last summer, when the show was taped before thousands in Australia, but nothing beats making it in America, the home of not only Motown, but much of the music they are most passionate about. “Our roots lie in American soul,” proclaims Andrew. “It’s the ultimate market for what we love. It feels like our options are endless. I’m looking forward to continuing our career, making great music, and playing our original songs.” Get ready… because here comes Human Nature. – See more at: http://www.humannaturelive.com/bio/#sthash.71hY2jcz.dpuf

Ideas for unlocking creativity in both children and adults.

Disney/ABCTelevision group president Anne Sweeney is one of the most powerful and forward-thinking executives in the entertainment business, but in the presence of Sir Ken Robinson, he of the ur–TED Talk about how schools kill creativity, she’s Princess Leia, she says, crying out, “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, help me!” (Disney owns the Star Wars franchise now, so it’s cool.) Sweeney laughs as she says it, but she’s clearly delighted to be hosting Robinson at her Los Angeles home, where the two convene on her patio for tea and conversation. The two explore how Sweeney’s life mirrors the themes in Robinson’s new book, Finding Your Element, discuss the sneaky genius of being a leader who’s a teacher, and muse about how to maintain the soul of an artist as we grow up.

Anne Sweeney: When I saw your TED Talk, I was struck by the story of the little girl who couldn’t sit still in the classroom. The teacher turned to the parent and said, “Get her into ballet lessons.” It’s that realization that when you don’t go toward the obvious, you go deeper into the person and really look for her potential.

I’ve become obsessed with portraiture, deconstructing faces. That has helped me at work–looking at problems from different angles.

Sir Ken Robinson: Did you have any idea when you were a kid that this is what you’d end up doing?

AS: No. I was a theater kid who loved the arts, played the piano, played the flute. My parents had three very different kids to raise. My sister was good at sports and my brother . . . we used to call him Nature Boy. He just lived outside.

KR: I’m often asked how parents can help kids find their way. What did your parents do?

Anne Sweeney’s 3 Rules for Being a Great Leader

1. Show up

“Walk around the halls. Eat in the cafeteria. When you show up, it means you are paying attention. It means you want to make sure people know how their world connects to the bigger whole.”

2. Hold everyone accountable for each other

“We are stapled together. We live and die by each other’s successes and failures.”

3. Communicate as a person, not simply as a boss

“Have a conversation. Don’t have it be a reporting relationship.”

AS: I think it’s the positive side of indulgence. They made sure if there was a production in town, we went. I tried out for every play, and they never said, “No, don’t do it, because it’s going to be a pain to pick you up after rehearsals.” They insisted upon creating opportunities for us. When my high school brought back Latin, my parents–they’re retired educators–were so excited. “Of course you’re going to take Latin,” they said. And I said, “But none of my friends are.” So there were two of us, two freshmen, and I had a terrible time, absolutely terrible. I remember saying to my mother one day, “You think I’m smarter than I am.” And she looked at me and said, “You don’t know how smart you are.”

KR: It’s important to note, especially for parents, that there just isn’t a straight line between what you do at school and what you go on to do. I argue in my new book it’s like being on the ocean. You keep correcting your course according to things that happen to you. And we end up writing a résumé, which makes it look like it was a plan. There was a study by a professor at Duke University looking at the degree majors for leaders in 500 companies in Silicon Valley. Forty percent were in math, science, or engineering, but 60% were in the arts and humanities.

AS: Really?

KR: It’s a really important point because the education system is being strangled by this culture’s standardized testing. It’s leading school districts to cut arts and humanities programs. There are lots of kids now who never get to pick up an instrument, never get to perform in a play. There’s a nationwide project called Art on a Cart, where people push these trolleys with crayons and papers because there’s no art in the schools. They go from school to school pushing the cart, do some art with the kids, and then move to the next school. Because there is this perception that somehow these subjects aren’t relevant: We’ve got to get the kids through the tests so that we can get competitive again economically.

AS: Right. STEM [science, technology, engineering, math studies].

KR: It is the most toxic attitude, really, because these school restrictions are being brought in what politicians believe to be the interest of the economy, but actually companies need people who can think differently and adapt and be creative. A company like Disney–in fact all companies–depends on this great multiplicity of talents.

AS: This is where the “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi” comes in, because how do you do that?

KR: The continuum, as I see it, starts with imagination. It’s the most extraordinary set of powers that we take for granted: the ability to bring into mind the things that aren’t present. It’s why we are so different from the rest of life on earth. That’s why we’re sitting in a beautiful building, drinking from these cups. Because human beings make things. We create things. We don’t live in the world directly; we live in a world of ideas and of concepts and theories and ideologies.

AS: But do you think there’s a point where we get off track? Picasso said, “Every child is an artist,” but does there come a point where we lose sight of that? And how do we get it back?

Sir Ken Robinson’s 3 Rules for Being a Great Leader

1. Adopt a growth mind-set

“If you’re always thinking about possibility, you’ll find it. You’ll keep creating the future.”

2. Create your own life

“The ‘element’ is where natural aptitude meets personal passion. It’s great if you’re in your element at work, because you get energy from that. But for people who aren’t, finding this elsewhere is important.”

3. Unlock others

“People get locked into their job descriptions. If you create a culture where they feel encouraged to unleash their various talents, they’re more engaged.”

KR: We do, but you’re asking the right question: How do you tap into that? It’s what you’re saying about your parents. If your parents hadn’t encouraged you, maybe required you, to play the piano and the flute, how would you know if you could have done that? We have all these latent talents, but you need circumstances to show it. You have people sitting around with all kinds of untapped potential. In Venezuela, kids across all the favelas and barrios are provided musical instruments for free. They go through a rigorous program called El Sistema, funded by the government, and it’s produced extraordinary results. These kids from the slums are playing Bach and Mozart and Beethoven. This has produced a generation of classical musicians, including Gustavo Dudamel, the director of the L.A. Philharmonic. But for that scheme, these kids would have gone the rest of their lives never knowing they could do that.

AS: When I was in graduate school [at Harvard Graduate School of Education], I had a wonderful professor, Dr. Robert Kegan, who did a lot of work on adult development. He wrote a book, The Evolving Self. And he became one of the pillars of the way I manage, based on the very simple belief that adults continue to learn. Too many times adults walk into situations and people have already put them in a box: “Oh, you write comedy.” Or, “You’re the development woman.” And it’s not just our profession. It’s hard to look at someone and say, “What else is inside?”

KR: How did you realize that you could lead in this way?

AS: I wanted to be a teacher at one point, but I got into kids’ TV. My first big job in TV was as an assistant to [program manager] Gerry Laybourne at Nickelodeon. She was a former teacher and was about all of us learning. One day she said to me, “I’m going to negotiate to buy some movies. Sit across from me and write down everything I say, and I will tell you what the person on the phone said.” This is 1981, so no speakerphones. Oh, it was hilarious. Then she mapped it out, not only the dollar amounts but the story of how the deal was made. This was like one-room schoolhouse training. That’s how I learned to negotiate. I remember thinking it was just so much fun. A good leader should focus on making sure everyone is being given the tools to do their job, not just expecting—poof!—that they’re going to produce great work.

There is this perception that somehow [arts and humanities] aren’t relevant. It is the most toxic attitude.

KR: You seem to be a very centered, calm person.

AS: On a good day. Yes.

KR: To some extent the style of leadership you describe is because of the sort of person you are; you couldn’t be somebody else anyway. But what keeps you centered?

AS: Art has been good for my soul. And it’s been good for my brain. I think I’m a better painter now than I was a musician growing up. You struggle to see things and translate an image through your hands to a canvas. Some weekends are just mind-blowingly difficult. I’ve ended up with a huge headache because I was struggling over how to express a face. I’ve become obsessed with portraiture, deconstructing faces and putting them back together. And in some way, that has helped me at work in deconstructing problems: Looking at them from different angles and realizing that sometimes when you turn something upside down it’s easier to figure out than if you were looking at it straight on.

KR: How often do you paint?

AS: I paint every weekend without fail.

KR: That’s what finding your element is all about. You get energy from it. And you get that from your work and from your art.

AS: You’re so engaged you hate to leave it. If you have a great day at work and you’ve been hit with all these great ideas and there’s a lot of excitement on your team, your mind doesn’t turn off. For years I’ve kept a pad of paper and pen by me at night, because things just occur to you.

KR: A lot of creative thinking doesn’t happen by forcing it. There’s this whole other processing that goes on if you leave it.

AS: It’s interesting you say that because a couple of weeks ago I just had time on my hands. I never have a couple of hours in the office that aren’t totally scheduled. And I just asked a couple of people to come in and sit. And they came in, they all had their notebooks or their iPads. After about half an hour, everybody relaxed and realized no, this really isn’t a meeting. This is really just sitting around, talking. When they left, I thought it was one of the most enjoyable meetings, maybe the most enjoyable meeting, I’d had in a long time. I loved how much we’re going to accomplish because we had this very unstructured, very meandering conversation about many different things.

KR: Would it work if you made that a regular thing, or is there something about it being impromptu?

AS: I think you could make it a regular impromptu thing. But I don’t think we allow ourselves a lot of that. We keep ourselves on schedules and agendas. There’s a lot to accomplish. But there’s something about introducing a new process that helps.

ABOUT THE KEEP IT REAL Rx GAME

In a world where technology exceeds our wildest expectations, we are still without tools with which to unlock and discover the most precious and fundamental parts of ourselves. Leslie Robinson, the creator of the Keep It Real game, invented this game to provide a space where people can come together to explore, discover and share their innermost thoughts, feelings and desires, to create connection which has meaning, to help people to communicate deeply, and to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the human psyche.

As we go through our routines, where along the way do we get feedback about our lives and the complexity of how experiences have affected us? Where are we taught about the power of emotions and how they influence us? How do we find our way? The Keep It Real game is all about US, and is all about LIFE. While we play, we discover one another in all of our different dimensions, are surprised and exhilarated by one another, have a fabulous time, and we are given the opportunity to reflect on our lives in a unique and transformative way.

Keep It Real Rx is a place where strangers become friends, friends become comrades, and families open up to one another and see one another with new eyes. The Keep It Real game beckons us to look at the underside of life and fling our flags away. It pleads with us to put our old, little snarly judges down for naps, try on another’s shoes for a while, listen to one another, and indulge fully in the splendor of our human experience.

The Keep It Real game asks real questions you have always wanted to ask but never dared to, and real questions you have always secretly wanted to talk about such as: Do you believe in “an eye for an eye” or turning the other cheek, and why?; What do you think keeps love alive?; What does freedom mean to you?; What is something you would like a second chance at? Think of a race different from your own – how would your life be different if you had been born into that race?; Would you rather be a famous rock star or a great politician, and why?; Have you ever had a spiritual experience? Explain.

The rules of the game are simple: you move around the circular track responding to questions in five categories (determined by the roll of the dice): Personal, The World, Fantasy/Imagination, Reflection and Action/Description. In the Interaction category you engage in unusual and enjoyable interactions, and in the Challenge category you are prompted to move out of your comfort zone, and to be glad you did. You have opportunities to win gold coins in the challenge category, and from your fellow players. The first player to reach the Giant Keep It Real space in the center of the board with the most gold coins wins the game.

Keep It Real is great for ages 14 and up, with 2 to 12 players. You can purchase the Keep It Real game online at Keepitrealgame.com, or at Amazon.com. To view videos, see more thought provoking questions, and to find out more, please visit us at our website at www.keepitrealgame.com, and at our blog at www.keepitrealgame.tumblr.com.

QUOTE

“There has never been a board game like this … EVER!!! We have seen and played the games that challenge our memory, our intellect, our management skills, even our physical dexterity. But KEEP IT REAL challenges us in ways that would do far more than entertain or help to pass the time. It will stay with us in potentially life altering ways in rebuilding our perceptions of others and ourselves, while having us run a fun filled spectrum of emotions in the process. No one has ever enjoyed themselves or explored themselves this much with a board game before!”

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Trance4mation Games Mission

Trance4mation Games views its mission as providing the public with bold and transformational games which are in essence restorative powerhouses; games to revitalize and rejuvenate the human spirit through the creation of a safe “space” for authentic, life-enhancing communication and interpersonal connection. Social isolation as well as breakdowns in communication in families have become significant issues. Trance4mation Games creates powerful, cutting edge interactive games designed to address and to change this trend.

Trance4mation Games is deeply committed to assisting those who are working to help our disenfranchised youth become more connected to their schools, and their communities. 90% of the students who have played this game feel the use of the Keep it Real game in their classrooms would promote a better learning environment, reduce violence, and create more harmony in their schools.

We are seeking to distribute the Keep It Real game to schools and organizations who work with youth, and are in need of a tool which will help them to connect, bond, and establish positive and productive relationships with teens, as well as to assist the teens in understanding themselves and others, and life more deeply.
