Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. Their partnership has been instrumental in our efforts to recover high-quality surplus food, enabling us to help local families experiencing hunger. FRN’s commitment to large-scale food recovery extends beyond the festivities of the football game. A recent partnership with Gaylord Hotels in Washington, D.C., and San Diego has resulted in over 100,000 pounds of food saved over the last few years. Haley Johnson is a First Lieutenant currently stationed at Fort Benning, GA assigned to 14th CSH working on the Mother-Baby Unit at Martin Army Community Hospital. Her first duty assignment was Joint Base San Antonio where she worked at the hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit prior to her compassionate reassignment to Fort Benning in 2019. She is a first generation college student and attended Kennesaw State University in Georgia on a national ROTC scholarship in 2012. During her ROTC career she attended Airborne school and competed on the Georgia Tech’s Ranger Challenge Team. She graduated with her nursing degree and started active duty December of 2016. She has competed in many fitness and physique sport competitions over the years and most recently competed on season two of NBC’s “The Titan Games”. The televised fitness competition series is hosted by The Rock and this season premiered May 25, 2020. 1LT Johnson appears on four consecutive episodes, 9,10,11, and 12. It was at the casting for this show that she met her now husband and they both welcomed a new baby into their lives this year.

A Toronto woman received a card from a secret admirer every Valentine’s Day for 60 years. Then a mysterious stranger showed up at her funeral

Meryl Dunsmore received her first card when she was 16. As the years went on, the cards were postmarked from Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and all over Europe.

In 1928, Meryl Dunsmore received a valentine in the mail from a secret admirer. The 16-year-old, a student at Toronto’s Central High School of Commerce (now Central Toronto Academy), had no idea who might have sent it.

The following February 14, another card arrived for Meryl.

By the time this photo was taken in 1986 by Star photographer Boris Spremo, Meryl had been receiving annual Valentine’s Day cards from her anonymous wooer for 58 years.

Meryl’s daughter Jeanette has some suspicions that her mom’s faithful epistler might have been a childhood sweetheart. “It was definitely not my father,” she laughs.

The cards followed Meryl through two marriages, three surnames and six changes of address — an impressive feat in the days before the internet. Whoever her valentine was, he clearly kept tabs on Meryl, despite leading an adventurous life of their own.

As Meryl told the Star back in 1986, “I thought he might be a pilot or a sailor because of the far-flung postmarks like Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and all over Europe. The only Canadian one came from Whitehorse.”

Meryl’s “Secret Pal” (as the cards were often signed) only missed one year — 1968 — but later sent a postcard from Paris to apologize and explain about the illness that had prevented him from sending the annual valentine.

Meryl’s husband, Alex, was never bothered by her admirer; in fact, it made perfect sense to him that others appreciated her as much as he did. “I’ve got the finest wife a man could ever have,” he said.

As time went by and Meryl’s anonymous Romeo aged, he acknowledged in one of the cards that there would come a time when he would only be able to communicate “from another medium.” However, he assured her she “would always be in [his] heart.”

In the summer of 1988, Meryl passed away peacefully at her home in Scarborough, at the age of 76, having received a total of 60 valentines from her secret admirer over her lifetime.

Her daughter Jeanette was too affected by grief to pay much attention to the crowd at the funeral, but a close friend informed her that an unfamiliar man had been sitting at the back of the church and had followed the procession at a respectful distance to the gravesite.

No card arrived at Meryl’s home that February. Her pal had said his last goodbye.

With March 20 being International Day of Happiness and with the aim to find out whether money really does buy happiness, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2020’s Happiest Cities in America as well as accompanying videos.

In order to determine where people in America are most content with their lives, WalletHub compared more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities across 30 key indicators of happiness. The data set ranges from depression rate to income-growth rate to average leisure time spent per day.
