President & Executive Director

Noël S. Harmon, PhD.

Noël Harmon is President and Executive Director of Asian Pacific Islander American Scholars, formerly, the Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund. She joined the organization in June 2018. Harmon comes to APIA Scholars from Say Yes to Education, where she was Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships. Harmon has also held positions at the Brookings Institution where she was the Associate Director of the Global Cities Initiatives, a joint project of Brookings and JPMorgan Chase, and at CEOS for Cities, where she was the Chief Program Officer and National Director of the Talent Dividend. She led the National Talent Dividend Network and Prize, a joint initiative of Living Cities and CEOs for Cities, to foster post-secondary attainment, through cross-sector collaboration among more than 60 network cities. She also served as a senior research analyst at the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) where she managed several long-term national initiatives.

Harmon spent the first decade of her career in direct service to students, working in administration at post-secondary institutions including Hofstra University, University of Michigan, Western Illinois University, and four years in Athletic Student Services at the University of Iowa.

Harmon holds a PhD in Higher Education and a BA in English from the University of Iowa, and a MA in Student Affairs Administration from Ball State University.

Dr. Momani has received numerous Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council awards and prizes for her research on global economic governance and political economy of the Middle East. Her most recent book, Arab Dawn, was published by the University of Toronto Press and has received wide praise for its innovative look at the Middle East and its economic potential.

Dr. Momani has been a public commentator and analyst on the Global Economy, Middle East and the Arab Spring. She is a regular contributor to CBC radio and is a Middle East analyst on CTV News, CBC’s The National, Al-Jazeera English, Bloomberg TV, Business News Network (BNN) and TVOs the Agenda. Dr. Momani is a regular contributor to national and international media on the Arab Spring and on global economic governance issues. She has written for the New York Times, The Economist, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Citizen, and many other reputable international newspapers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to The Scholar Rescue Fund (at the Institute of International Education, 809 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017), a cause that was extremely dear to Fred.

Author and Scholar of Islamic Thought and Medieval Philosophy to Give Talk on 

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce The Dr. Reza Khatib and Georgianna Clifford Khatib Chair in Comparative Religion Sixth Annual Lecture featuring Mehdi Aminrazavi, Ph.D., author and professor of philosophy and religion. His talk, “Shiʻism and the Politics of the Hidden Imam” will be presented on Thursday, April 3 in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium on the Brooklyn Campus and on Thursday, April 10 in the McGann Conference Room on the Long Island Campus. Both lectures will take place at 12:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

“Dr. Aminrazavi is a leading scholar on Shiite Islam, Persian culture and Islamic philosophy,” said Dr. Thomas Petriano, SJC professor, Department of Religious Studies. “Based on the course he is presently teaching, ‘Saints, Sufis and Warriors of God: Shi‘ism and Persian Culture,’ his lecture promises to be a timely and informative discussion of Shiite Islam and the influence of its theology on the current culture and politics of Iran. We are fortunate to have him as this year’s Khatib Chair.”

A native of Iran, Dr. Aminrazavi is a professor of classics, philosophy and religion at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, V.A., who specializes in the areas of eastern religions, Islam and the Middle East, Islamic philosophy and theology, medieval philosophy and philosophy of religion. A member of the editorial board of the Journal of Religious Studies, Cambridge University Press, he has authored and edited numerous books and articles and co-edited the five-volume set, An Anthology of Philosophy in Persia, which was recognized at the 23^rd annual Tehran International Book Fair in 2010 as a superior book in the field of humanities. Dr. Aminrazavi has been the recipient of many national and international awards and accolades for his achievements in the field. He received a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from Temple University after receiving an M.A. in Philosophy and a B.A. in Urban Planning from the University of Washington.

Funded by Dr. Reza Khatib and Mrs. Georgianna Clifford Khatib ’52, the Chair’s purpose is to promote interfaith dialogue, with the study of Islam being an integral part of the initiative. Each spring, through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Khatib, the College hosts a noted scholar who lectures, leads faculty discussions and teaches a course to students from both campuses.
