Career Development

The workshop provides the recipients with an opportunity to speak with industry professionals about their field of interest and specialty. Additionally, workshops are held in major college markets nationwide for students outside of the scholarship recipients.

Internship Programs

The LAGRANT Foundation provides internships to undergraduate and graduate students at selected advertising, public relations, and marketing agencies, as well as publishing companies and communications-related businesses.
Mentors

WIN SCHOLARSHIP AS EARLY AS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO STUDY WHAT SCHOLARSHIPS MIGHT HELP YOU.
Over the past 15 years, college scholarship strategist Jean O’Toole has spoken before thousands of students, inspiring them to pursue their academic dreams. Now she has a new book out that helps them afford those dreams, Scholarship Strategies: Finding and Winning the Money You Need (Morgan James Publishing, Trade Paper,128 pages, $17.95, ISBN: 987-1-64279-482-3).

www.amazon.com/Scholarship-Strategies-Finding-Winning-Money/dp/1642794821

“You don’t need to be academically at the top of your class a star athlete, or a student with financial need in order to qualify for thousands of dollars of scholarship opportunities,” asserts O’Toole, co-founder of Connections101, a youth empowerment company specializing in motivational tools for outside scholarship searching.
O’Toole has helped students win thousands of dollars, including some individuals that were awarded up to $200,000.
“Money for college is out there,” she encourages. “You just need to know where to find it and how to win it. It’s all about working smarter and not harder. ”
In Scholarship Strategies, the motivational speaker shares her vast knowledge, laying out 25 clear strategies for winning the money needed for college, and identifies 15 ways to reduce college costs beyond scholarships and traditional financial aid.
O’Toole shares:
● How students can take a smart, methodical, organized, and disciplined approach to apply for many winnable scholarships.
● Which scholarships have less competition and lower thresholds to win?
● How students can identify their strengths, interests, connections, demographics, and accomplishments in order to be in a position to qualify for plenty of scholarships.
● Additional money students can win for room and board, books, travel, or study abroad – even if they get a full ride because of academics, athletics, or financial need.
● How parents can collaborate with students to divide and conquer the scholarship search process.
● Why guidance counselors, librarians, financial advisors, alumni, and government agencies each only know about some scholarships — and why you need to consult with many resources to get a complete picture of the scholarship landscape.
● Harmful scholarship myths that are debunked.
● How students as young as kindergarteners and middle-schoolers — or those older than 30 — can still win scholarships.
● Many examples of odd, unique, and rare scholarships that almost anyone could win.
“Higher education costs continue to rise,” says O’Toole. “Student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt in the United States reaching $1.5 Trillion dollars. Whether it costs a family$30,000 or $300,000 for a college degree, scholarship monies can dramatically reduce costs and benefit the bottom line..”
Some of O’Toole’s strategies include:
● Applying for local and regional scholarships first.
● Seeking out a series of small scholarships and not just one big one.
● Starting a scholarship search even before high school.
● Joining groups and organizations so you can qualify to apply for their scholarships.
● Asking family members and friends about scholarships from their employer, group affiliations, Jonestown.
● Talk to scholarship winners to gain insight on how they won.
● Form a bond with a scholarship buddy and share info on scholarships to apply to.
● Start applying early and often – and keep track of your applications.
● Using past homework assignments as material for scholarships as a huge time saver.
“Parents and students will be amazed at how much money is available to them for scholarships they never imagined even existed,” says O’Toole. “Anyone who follows the advice in Scholarships Strategies and uses the resources at www.Connections101.com are certain to find more scholarships than if they only rely on their school guidance offices.
“Jean’s energy and enthusiasm capture the student’s attention from the get-go, and she gets them to think about college and scholarships in new and different ways. Not only does she share her knowledge and insight with students, but she also provides them with strategies they need to take action and be successful in their pursuits. Jean provides an amazing resource; there is nothing like it out there!”
CUNY The City University of New York. There is a lot of Good News at the newest community college in New York City in decades. We speak to the President, Dr. Scott Evenbeck
Established on September 20, 2011, with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s approval of A Master Plan Amendment, The New Community College at CUNY was the University’s first new community college in more than 40 years. The second community college in Manhattan was inspired by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein’s interest in improving graduation rates for CUNY’s diverse urban students with a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. “There is no more urgent task in higher education than to find ways to help more community college students succeed,” the Chancellor has said.
The New Community College at CUNY officially opened its doors in midtown Manhattan overlooking Bryant Park on August 20, 2012, after four years of planning in consultation with experts from around the country and hundreds of faculty and staff across the University. At the college’s inaugural Convocation, CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein awarded Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal from The City University of New York for his support and commitment to the development of this innovative new college. In accepting the medal the Mayor commented, “I think this school has the potential to be a game-changing model for community colleges across the country.”
The New Community College enrolled its inaugural class of 300 students in the fall of 2012. As an open-admissions institution, the college accepts applicants who have a high school diploma or a GED. Enrollment will grow to approximately 5,000 when the college moves to its permanent home at 59th Street and 10th Avenue.

Learn more about the development of the college by reading the New Community College Concept Paper, the case study Rethinking Community College for the 21st Century and other college planning documents from 2008-2010.
In April 2013 The City University of New York received a $25 million gift from the Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation to support The New Community College at CUNY and two other community college initiatives to boost student retention and graduation rates. In honor of the $15 million endowment gift to the college, the foundation’s largest and the largest ever given to a New York State community college, the CUNY Board of Trustees passed a resolution to rename The New Community College Stella and Charles Guttman Community College. <pdf> The gift will provide support for activities such as paid internships, community service and experiential learning and for scholarships and student emergency funds.
The Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation focuses much of its grantmaking on educational programs and social services to support low-income New York City children, youth and families. The son of immigrants, Charles Guttman was raised on the Lower East Side and attended public school until age 13, when he began working odd jobs to help support his family. In adulthood he built a successful business, The Paddington Corp. In 1959, he and his wife, Stella Rappaport Guttman, established the Guttman Foundation for the “improvement and benefit of mankind, and the alleviation of human suffering.” Upon their deaths in 1969, without leaving descendants, the Guttmans bequeathed substantially all of their assets to the Foundation.

Bonnie Wong is President of Asian Women in Business, which supports all aspects of Asian businesswomen and entrepreneurs, from skills-building workshops and seminars to identifying procurement opportunities and providing scholarships. I’m honored to be in their company, and it will be a delightful evening in a beautiful environment. Attendees will also be able to view two current exhibits at the Met, The Nelson A. Rockefeller Vision and Jewels by JAR (jewelry designer Joel A. Rosenthal).

Approximately 600 scholarships are available for the 2014-15 academic year for American high school students to study language through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. NSLI-Y is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal and informal language learning through a study abroad experience, which includes language classes and living in a local community abroad, often with a host family.

Scholarships to participate in summer or academic year programs are available for the study of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. The merit-based scholarships cover domestic and international travel, tuition and related academic expenses, daily language classes, supporting cultural activities, room and board, and secondary health benefits for travel abroad.

Launched in 2006, the goal of NSLI-Y is to increase the number of young Americans with the language skills necessary to advance international dialogue and increase understanding between cultures. Alumni of NSLI-Y can become leaders in a variety of international fields in the private, academic or government sector. NSLI-Y is administered by American Councils for International Education, in cooperation with AFS-USA, iEARN, American Cultural Exchange Service (ACES), Americans Promoting Study Abroad (APSA), AMIDEAST, Legacy International, Russian American Foundation (RAF), and University of Delaware.

To be eligible for 2014-15 program scholarships, applicants must be:

• U.S. citizens

• Current high school students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher

• 15 – 18 years of age at the start of the program

A New York area teen is being recognized as a true superstar. The senior from School of the Future High School has been named as a 2007 Coca-Cola Scholar not just for academic achievement, but also for outstanding leadership in school and in the community. Out of 89-thousand applicants nation-wide, she is one of only 250 finalists receiving this coveted award. And the competition isn’t over yet! Natasha speaks to us from Atlanta where other finalists are gathered for final interviews to determine just how much money they’ll receive. She joins us with Angela Harrell, Creative Director of Coca Cola Executive Communications. The best and brightest of America’s high school seniors will start college next fall with the help of their local Coca-Cola Bottler and The Coca-Cola Company.

Tow hundred and fifty students were selected as scholarship finalists from a field of more than 2,100 semifinalists (and 87,000 + original applicants) by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation based on academic excellence, school, and community extracurricular activities. The 250 high school seniors were selected from 26,000 high schools nationwide to compete for the cash scholarships from the Coca-Cola Scolars Foundation. On April 12, the finalists traveled to Atlanta, the headquarters for The Coca-Cola Company, to compete for 50 four-year college scholarships of $20,00 and 200 four-year scholarships of $10,000. Over the four-day period, the finalists interviewed with a National Selection Committee, toured Atlanta landmarks, went to an Atlanta Braves game, met with formere Coca-Cola Scholars, and participated in a range of activities including a community service project. Additionally, the 2007 Class of Coca-Cola Scholars will be recognized at a banquet hosted by Coca-Cola, educators, local dignitaries, and friends of the Scholars Foundation.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is one of the most recognized and respected corporate-sponsored scholarships in America. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation was created in 1986 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Coca-Cola and to establish a legacy for the education of tomorrows leader through college scholarships. With the Class of 2007 Scholars, more than 3,750 young scholars nationwide have benefited from $32 million that the Coca-Cola Scholarship Foundation has provided. Natasha is one of the top students in her senior class at the School of the Future, a small high school in the heart of New York City. There she has received numerous academic awards for her literary talent, but is best known for her young entrepreneurial skills.

When Natasha wanted an after school job when she was 14, she was turned away because she was too young. Undeterred, she started her own business, BliNg-BliNg Discount Fashion Jewelry and sells affordable, trendy accessories at street fairs and college campuses. Her entrepreneurial skills have landed her the 2005 Girls Going Places award, the Merrill Lynch Growing Up CEO award and also a 2007 Horatio Alger Scholarship. She took her skills with jewelry and created The Pearl Project to benefit Dress for Success, and organization that helps women back into the work force. For the Pearl Project, she sold 5,000 necklaces to raise $35,000 for Dress for Success. With the 2007 class of Scholars, The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have awarded $32 -Million-dollars in scholarships.
