ATLANTA, GA — The Captain Planet Foundation recently announced the launch of the 2026 Green Heart STEM Challenge, welcoming its largest cohort to date with nearly 5,000 students, 132 educators, and 71 schools across 11 states participating. 

The Green Heart STEM Challenge is delivered through a hybrid model, with in-person programming in metro Atlanta, Houston, and Miami, alongside virtual participation that enables schools in additional states to engage fully. This structure supports deep, place-based learning in core communities while expanding national access.

Designed for students in grades 6–9, the Challenge blends STEM learning with real-world problem solving, guiding students to identify environmental challenges in their communities and develop practical, implementable solutions. It follows a rotating, four-year cycle focused on EARTH, WIND, FIRE, and WATER, ensuring students explore a broad range of environmental systems and solutions over time.

The 2026 Challenge features EARTH, with students exploring issues such as soil health, tree canopy, composting, and food waste. Educators onboard students to the Challenge platform, where teams form, research, and begin building solutions rooted in local needs.

“What sets this Challenge apart is that students are mentored and funded to implement their winning ideas,!” said Leesa Carter-Jones, President and CEO of Captain Planet Foundation. “They’re not just learning about environmental challenges, they’re designing solutions and being held accountable for real outcomes.”

Since its launch, the Challenge has shown growing, measurable impact. In recent cycles, hundreds of student teams have progressed from ideas to formal project plans, with an increasing percentage advancing to implementation. Past winners have secured additional funding, expanded beyond their schools, and built long-term community partnerships, including teams in Atlanta and Houston continuing work well beyond the Challenge timeline. Across cohorts, student-led projects have tackled composting and food waste, erosion control and reforestation, water quality, repair-and-reuse systems, and circularity efforts reducing fast fashion and single-use waste.

The Challenge is supported by Accenture, Amazon, Delta Air Lines, Georgia Natural Gas, Green Mountain Energy, and Susan J. Klein, among others. Accenture employees also serve as volunteer mentors and project managers, helping student teams refine ideas, develop budgets, and prepare for implementation through the Challenge’s Idea Incubator.

Entering its fourth year, the Green Heart STEM Challenge continues to show what’s possible when students are trusted with real responsibility, and supported to turn ideas into action.

DURING CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

With schools closing to help stop the spread of coronavirus, millions of kids will be at home and you may even be their new substitute teacher. If you’re new to home schooling, you’re probably wondering how you can help your children learn and keep them occupied while you work from home too.

It’s especially important to make certain this health crisis doesn’t impact student achievement or leave any student behind. While some schools and teachers may have learning packets or online classes, there is now a new, free video series called Knowledge on the Go that features video lessons across math,English language arts and science subjects.

Knowledge on the Go classes will consist of free recorded daily lessons in Grades K–12 of Eureka Math; (a Common Core-aligned curriculum published by Great Minds Inc., equates mathematical concepts to stories, with the aim of developing conceptual understanding).

It also includes Grades K–8 of Wit& Wisdom, Great Minds’ English language arts curriculum; and Grades 3–5 of PhD Science. Great Minds’ own teachers will deliver the lessons,which will be available to anyone and viewable on any device, even a smartphone. Great Minds will release approximately 25 video lessons across the three curricula per day.

It’s also a good idea to develop a daily routine schedule for kids. Parents can also check into learning webinars for their children’sage group and encourage them to listen to audio books and podcasts.

Additional Learning from Home Tips:

Designate and/or set up a place for your child to work
Discuss with your child how they will handle schoolwork and limit distractions
Plan ways in which your child can exercise at home or get some type of physical activity.

On Friday, March 20th, Lynne Munson, Great Minds founder and CEO will be available to discuss how to keep building knowledge in your children during the coronavirus outbreak. She’ll also talk about best ways to keep kids engaged in learning at home and the free opportunities available for parents who may be taking on the role of “substitute” teacher.

The Educational Foundation was founded in 1978 to promote educational activities on behalf of NATPE. Through seminars, grants, workshops, meetings, instructional video and conferences, the Foundation has reached out to NATPE members, the academic community and students to help prepare them for a future in television.

In 1980, the Foundation began placing BEA faculty members into summer internships at industry organizations. In 1984, the program was expanded to include faculty at all two- and four-year colleges and universities. Over the years, the Faculty Development Grant has placed over 125 instructors at organizations around the country.

As part of the Faculty Development Grant, recipients were also invited to attend the annual Conference and Exhibition free of charge. This program was later expanded to include additional faculty members, and special faculty-only sessions were added to the Conference activities. This evolved into the Faculty Fellowship Program, which has made the NATPE Conference accessible to hundreds of instructors worldwide.

Reaching hundreds more instructors, and thousands of students, are the Living Curriculum series of videotapes (and now DVDs) distributed to colleges and universities. Featuring key sessions from each year’s Conference, the Living Curriculum series has been distributed since the 1990s.

Starting in 1986 at American University, the Foundation began programming educational seminars and workshops for instructors and industry professionals. These sessions have taken different forms over the years. They’ve occurred as live seminars, ‘tele-workshops’ and video workshops in an effort to reach as wide an audience as possible.

In the mid-1980s, the Foundation also began expanding its direct outreach to students – first through an association with the National College Television Society, and later through a video PSA contest that eventually became the Student Video and Film Production Award. To date, over $100,000 has been awarded to student producers and schools creating quality video productions.

By the late 1990s, the Foundation implemented a series of Student Career Workshops aimed at helping students prepare for jobs in the industry. Foundation Career Expos in Sydney, Australia, in 1998 and 1999, and a similar session at the Sorbonne in Paris in 2000, were the prototypes for the Student Career Workshops which have taken place across the U.S. since 2001. Workshops for 100-200 students have been held in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, South Carolina, and Washington, D.C.

The revolutionary new brand, Net Generation, will provide American tennis with one unified youth brand for children to get into the sport, making it easier for children and their parents to learn about tennis and get into the game in schools, parks and tennis clubs across the country.

The movement embraces all aspects of youth play for kids ages 5-18. The official Net Generation launch will take place at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on Aug. 26.

“Net Generation is a bold approach to empower kids to play the game while elevating and setting new standards on how we deliver and engage children in our sport,” said Craig Morris, General Manager, USTA Community Tennis and Youth Tennis. “These efforts will make a lasting impact to help drive youth participation throughout the country. There is no bigger and better stage than the US Open to launch the brand.”

The objective of Net Generation is to provide a safe connection to the sport, as well as a platform to celebrate individuality and self-expression. To ensure a safe environment, all Net Generation providers – including coaches, teachers, players and volunteers – must first go through a Safe Play Program, which involves a three-step process, including a background check, by registering on NetGeneration.com.

With the USTA’s focus on childhood safety, this system will be the first of its kind in the sports landscape to require all providers to submit to a comprehensive screening and education program.

“It is essential to implement the best infrastructure and environment for the current and future generation of kids,” said Katrina Adams, USTA Chairman of the Board, CEO and President. “Net Generation will help further our commitment to encouraging healthy lifestyles and bringing more children into the game by reaching kids and parents in a dynamic and easier way than ever before.”

In addition to the official launch at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day Powered by Net Generation, the brand will have a significant presence leading up to and at this years’ US Open.

Net Generation has been integrated at US Open Series events throughout the summer, including at kids’ days, high school days, family days and festivals to encourage more kids and families to join the sport.

Net Generation will have a dedicated kids’ zone at the US Open Experience at the Seaport District NYC on Aug. 24-25, and a Net Generation Arcade near the Grandstand at the US Open aims to reinvent the retro classic 80s video arcade games with a tennis twist.

Also at the US Open, kids will receive their own Wildcard Activity Book that will serve as every child’s guide to Net Generation, including a roadmap, activities and pages for autographs, and the Fan Court at the US Open American Express Fan Experience in the Chase Center will include on-court activities, clinics and games.

In addition, the USTA will enlist 32 social media brand influencers, “Netset Ambassadors.” who are ages 5-18 with a strong social media presence, to showcase Net Generation through their views. The ambassadors will create content promoting the brand to their social media followings.

In addition to serving as Netset Ambassadors, three lucky influencers have been selected to serve as “kidcasters” who will give followers a behind-the-scenes look at the US Open.

The USTA has a longstanding commitment to encouraging healthy and active lifestyles among children. Over the last decade, youth tennis has brought hundreds of thousands of kids into the sport by using shorter courts, lower-bouncing balls and lighter racquets to allow them to play more quickly and easily.

To further evolve these efforts, the USTA will be working closely with schools and school districts by providing equipment, trainings and resources for teachers. The USTA has developed a new schools tennis curriculum and will encourage schools to have a community partner to help kids find a tennis facility to play after school in partnership with SHAPE America.

Furthermore, Net Generation will activate throughout all competitive levels including youth tennis, team tennis and junior competition. By setting new standards and collaborating with programs across the board, these efforts will help unite the tennis industry by sharing the same mission to get more kids playing tennis.
