Hello Everyone,

Pray all is well with you and that you saw the many photos from our collaborative successful Peace Day Concert, I hope you were proud.

We have been working hard to organize our upcoming Earth & Water Times Square Concert, April 22, 2025, in collaboration with the Manhattan Borough President and the City. We have asked for all the Plazas in Times Square, a major GREEN undertaking…. I will keep you posted. I have attached our New Presentation, which OMMM helped put together, and Poster.

Also, our latest opportunity is the Mars Space Odyssey as our KICK-OFF FOR 2025 EARTH DAY AND WATER DAY with my buddy and crew going to sea to learn life at sea and how it relates to a Mars Expedition. Reid holds the world record for 1,152 Days at Sea without touching land. Attached is our Press Release If you can help promote we would appreciate it, you are all in it. We are working on the technology to ask them questions at sea and maybe each of you can do that, still being worked out.

However, you can help get the word it would be great. Thank you. Paul & Team

Mars Ocean Analogs Crew Launches NYC’s First High Seas Training for Mars Aspiring Analog Astronauts

November 17-29, 2024 – New York City

Good News Broadcast will LIVE STREAM on YouTube the “High Sea” training as a Kick-Off for their 23rd Annual Earth & Water Day LIVE 5-Hour Worldwide Clean Energy Concert in Times Square on April 22, 2025.”

The Mars Ocean Analogs® crew is set to embark on a groundbreaking sailing mission this November, departing from New York City on the historic Schooner Anne Starship. Led by veteran sea captain and world record holder Reid Stowe, the team will undertake NYC’s first-ever high seas analog training for aspiring astronauts. This mission, scheduled from November 17 to November 29, will simulate the extreme conditions of danger, high performance, isolation and self-sufficiency that astronauts will face during future missions to Mars.

The link for LIVE STREAM IS XXX

The Schooner Anne is the same vessel that Stowe commanded on the longest sea voyage in history, spending 1,152 days continuously at sea without resupply from 2007 to 2010—an unprecedented analog for a journey to Mars. During that voyage, Stowe and his crew navigated far beyond the sight of land, in conditions similar to what astronauts will experience during a three-year mission to Mars.

Why Is This Mission So Critical Now?

As space agencies worldwide accelerate their plans to send humans to Mars, a crucial gap remains in astronaut training. The human mission to Mars and back is expected to take approximately three years, during which astronauts will be isolated in a cramped, high-stakes environment—one that only Reid Stowe has simulated continuously over three years through his record-breaking voyage.

“Mars aspiring trainees must gain experience in the isolated, life-and-death expanse of the high seas to truly prepare for the challenges of a Mars mission,” explains Stowe, Commander of the Schooner Anne. “While billions of dollars are being invested in space technology, extreme astronaut training at sea is being overlooked. The human element is the weak link, and our mission is to strengthen that by offering real-world, high-seas analogs that push both physical and psychological limits.”

A Proven Training Ground

This upcoming mission will be the Mars Ocean Analog team’s fifth high-seas expedition, following four successful voyages that have attracted global media attention and support, including a mission to the SpaceX launch pad near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Mars Ocean Analogs® crew is inviting select members of the media to meet the captain and crew aboard the Schooner Anne, which has played a pivotal role in advancing human spaceflight training through these Mars analog missions.

This mission, scheduled from November 16 to November 26, will simulate the extreme conditions of danger, high performance, isolation and self-sufficiency that astronauts will face during future missions to Mars.

I didn’t feel so good about being in a river isolated from the modern world with a stuck rudder. Georgetown might have the facilities but that meant running the gauntlet back over the mud flats, sandbars, and fishing stakes to a place that is definitely not safe for small sailboats. At night I cranked on the rudder ropes side to side. Before breakfast I tried again. The situation looked bleak. The current on the river at Parika ran strong and rough waves made getting in and out of the dinghy dangerous. When we returned from a shore excursion we had to drag the dinghy through knee deep mud to launch for the schooner.

I dove under the schooner with gloves on and felt every inch of the barnacle clad rudder where it exits the stern ten feet down to where it stood in the heavy duty shoe bolted to the bottom of the keel and didn’t discover anything wrong. At dawn I cranked on the steering lines again and suddenly we heard a noise. Then the rudder swung free again! After some time I began to think that perhaps when we were aground and bouncing on the bottom, the rudder was jammed up. Now we carry on with our broken rudder and makeshift steering lines not sure when we will ever be able to repair it properly.

Our NYC friend Capt. Dougie built a 65 ft wooden schooner in Guyana and told us about an isolated jungle town named Supanam where they build big wooden boats on the shore. We decided before our departure that Supanam would be our destination. From Parika we looked at our chart of the Essequibo river mouth. After running aground it looked daunting to try to cross 16 miles of islands, shallows and mudflats to go further into the wild. Luckily we met a man from Supanam who offered to take us across in his speed boat to show us the zig-zagging route. It was a great day. We loved the quaint hidden, protected charm of the town and the all the wooden boats perched on the river bank.

We calculated the tides and timed our trip exactly to go through the trickiest parts at high tide. What a relief it was to come in off the windblown wide river and pull into a protected deep little river. We motored slowly past the villages and all the moored junk ferry boats. Friends we were introduced to met us and showed us just where to anchor with bow and stern anchors close to the edge of the river. The leaves of a towering bamboo grove almost touched the schooner as she rested in a swift flowing jungle river.

This morning it began to rain and we quickly set our rain catchment awnings. Alex and Rachel watched one tank fill up and then they repositioned the rain tarp to flow into another tank as Darshen filled buckets from under the cockpit awning. We caught maybe a hundred gallons in two hours and about five hundred gallons by the next morning. In Georgetown, water is expensive to buy and has to go through customs before we could get it. So we opted to take a chance and catch our own water. Today we saw that would be able to take care of our fresh water needs.

This is just a very brief description of what we’ve been doing. All of the emotions, close calls, detours, and drama will be in the book we are working on.

Today is her birthday. We wish her well and many things more. She is probably getting a lot of well wishes, first from our dad, Harry, then from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mom is the matriarch of a great big family including a brother and sisters and all their children and grandchildren. Everybody gathers together at the family beach cottage, built by her father and mother, on the waterway in North Carolina. It was there that we learned our boating and boat building skills. I built both of my boats at the family beach cottage. Mom, being the oldest and loving her responsibilities, is in charge. We all love her and where would we be without her.
The schooner is so lucky to have a namesake like her. It could have been named Harry, but I always saw the boat as a she. Hey Dad do we still have those mitts and balls? I can’t wait to come home and play catch! Being isolated for so long in such a far away place brings out a lot of deep feelings. I feel pulled to the edge of human existence, but I still have longings to come back home and have it never change. Except we get a little older. Happy Birthday Mom! Yesterday, our first day in the Southern Ocean, the wind died down and by darkness the sea was glassy, but rolly all around us. I finally lost control of the schooner because of the lack of wind and she turned around and faced west. I was a little peeved at first and got a little cranky trying to get her turned around and going.
I gave up in a huff and heaved-to for the night. It didn’t really matter. We weren’t racing or in a hurry. I guess it came as a surprise because were expecting so much wind. By morning a light breeze picked up from the north and we got going again. Soanya says each time I say I think I’ve got the boat in good order, something happens that gives me more work. When I see things coming together, I can’t help myself. I want to re-confirm it. I think I’m ahead of the curve now. I’ve been saying it a lot. I think the schooner ANNE is a good boat. The Captain and Crew Born into a family of longtime boat builders and inspired by his father’s Air Force career, Reid has been challenging the seas with lengthy voyages since age 19, when he first sailed from Hawaii to New Zealand in 1971. It was during this time that he met and was influenced by France’s Bernard Moitessier1, the first man to sail nonstop around the world.
[Ed. 1. Robert Knox-Johnston is the record holder for the first nonstop single handed circumnavigation. Moitessier who also did a circumnavigation in the same race did not return to England but continued around again. Thanks, Richard.]
A feature written about the Explorers Club of New York by Conde Nast Traveler describes Reid as being the “genuine article, with an old-fashioned spirit of adventure” and “a man with that rare combination of unbridled passion and impetuosity.” Nicholas Sullivan, president of the Explorer’s Club, adds that “By virtue of his Voyage of 1000 Days, Reid will be one of the greatest explorers ever.”
Returning from New Zealand, Reid built a 1400-pound catamaran and ventured for three years across the Atlantic Ocean and back, then up the Amazon River-all without benefit of radio, electronics, or motor. In 1976, brimming with knowledge and confidence, Reid began preparing for a challenging six-month voyage to the Antarctic. With the help of family and friends, he designed and built, in a year and a half, what he terms “the ultimate long distance, heavy weather sailboat,” a 70-foot and 60-ton gaff-rigged schooner that he named Anne, in honor of his mother.
For six months in 1986, Reid and a crew sailed her to Antarctica, “where few boats venture due to the extremely dangerous conditions.” Photo Journal of the Building the Anne Soanya Ahmad was born in Queens, New York. The eldest of three children, she was raised by parents who emigrated from Guyana. She attended The City College of New York as part of the first class of Cuny Honors College students. There she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in photography. After having photographed many black and white harborscapes of cities on the east coast, she became interested in learning more about the waterfront, prompting her to pursue a second degree in Maritime Technology at Kingsborough Community College.
Soanya came into contact with the 1000 Days Non-stop at Sea expedition at the beginning of her third year in college as she was photographing the piers of Manhattan. Having worked various office jobs through college, as she was graduating, she realized the well defined city grid and square cubicle was not for her.
She preferred instead to follow her own expansive spirit in a less limiting environment and the sea was the perfect place to start. Three years after her first encounter with the project, she decided to become a part of it and accompany the noble and charming captain of the expedition, Reid Stowe, on his greatest and most challenging voyage yet. After being onboard the Schooner Anne for a year now, Soanya has come to play an integral role with all facets of the expedition including, photographing, videotaping, organizing, and inventorying as well as operating all of the computers and communications equipment
