A new children’s book is being released to help families impacted by breast cancer.

“The Adventure Jar: A Story of Magic for Families Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer” is intended for children ages three to eight. The book follows the story of a family affected by metastatic breast cancer as they discover that even through the challenges of their mom’s diagnosis – involving inevitable change, uncertainty and disappointment – there is magic to be found in time shared together.

Family life can be upended when a parent has cancer, and it can be difficult for parents to bear witness to the impact it can have on young children – creating a crucial need for resources to help navigate the challenging emotions that follow.

The Adventure Jar, led by Gilead Sciences, was created in collaboration with eight diverse members of the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and professionals, including a psychiatrist, to help families impacted by MBC.

Among these collaborators is Gilead Patient Ambassador Lauren Huffmaster. She was diagnosed with MBC at 37 years old and struggled with the emotional impact cancer had on her husband and three young daughters, who were two, four and six at the time. Nearly a decade since her diagnosis, MBC continues to shape the lives of her daughters, but they’ve made it a habit to redefine their circumstances.

Sleep Disruptions Impact Mood, Productivity & Stress Levels***

A new survey revealed that adults and caregivers of children aged 2-17 years living with atopic dermatitis (AD), commonly referred to as eczema, experience sleep disruptions attributed to the condition’s hallmark symptom of itching, which negatively impacts their mood, decreases daytime productivity and heightens stress levels.

AD, one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases, affects over 26 million people in the U.S. alone and up to 10% of adults worldwide. AD occurs most frequently in children, affecting up to 20% worldwide.

The prevalence of atopic dermatitis, an extremely burdensome skin condition that negatively impacts the quality of life of patients suffering from AD and the families and caretakers of patients with AD, continues to grow. Dr. John Browning, a pediatric dermatologist, believes that patients need meaningful solutions that go beyond the surface of the skin. This survey underscores how adults with AD and caregivers of children ages 2-17 years with AD feel about the current treatment landscape and their understanding of concerns related to using topical steroids. It also aimed to explore the extent to which AD symptoms disrupt sleep and, consequently, affect daily functioning for both AD patients and their caregivers.

Key findings from the survey among adult patients with AD (n=502) and caregivers of children 2-17 with AD (n=510):
Itch is a top frustration that impacts patients’ and caregivers’ ability to get quality sleep.

89% of adult patients and caregivers of children aged 2-17 years with atopic dermatitis said itch is a top frustration from atopic dermatitis, and 94% said itching is the top symptom that disrupts sleep.

74% of adult patients and caregivers of children aged 2-17 years with atopic dermatitis stated that atopic dermatitis frequently or occasionally impacts their ability to get quality sleep, and 76% claim they have disrupted sleep an average of one to four nights per week.

These sleep disruptions have negative effects on mood (69%), daily routines (54%), daytime focus (51%), daytime productivity (51%) and stress (50%).

A majority of patients apply topicals before bed to ensure a good night’s sleep, however, patients and caregivers of children with AD have concerns about current treatment options.

72% of adult patients and caregivers of children aged 2-17 years with atopic dermatitis apply topicals before bed in an effort to ensure a good night’s sleep.

46% of caregivers of children aged 2-17 years with atopic dermatitis are extremely or very concerned about using topical steroids for their child’s atopic dermatitis.

Most patients and caregivers feel there should be a wider variety of treatment options.

Current topical treatments present issues that disrupt sleep, such as needing time to dry (58%), causing irritation (51%), and feeling uncomfortable (51%).

83% of adult patients and caregivers of children aged 2-17 years with atopic dermatitis said there is an unmet need in current atopic dermatitis treatment options.

Dr. Browning will discuss how itch (the hallmark symptom of atopic dermatitis), significantly disrupts sleep and the pressing need for new, long-term, treatment options to provide itch relief.

November is Bladder Health Month
With more people getting vaccinated, this holiday season, many of us can finally get back to spending quality time with our loved ones.
But for some, getting through the holidays with overactive bladder (OAB) can be frustrating and embarrassing, leaving many running for the bathroom throughout the festivities. But, OAB doesn’t have to be disruptive, and you aren’t suffering alone.
Common symptoms of OAB include:
 Urgency: a sudden need to go[ii]  Frequency: the need to go oftenii
• Urge urinary incontinence: leakage episodesii
If you think you may be experiencing symptoms, contact your healthcare provider who may recommend behavioral therapies such as bladder training or pelvic-floor muscle training. If these therapies don’t work, you may need medication. Make sure you talk to your healthcare provider about ways to manage your OAB symptoms and understand which medicines may work best for you.
In the short-term, if you plan on traveling to visit family and friends this year, just be sure to plan ahead.
Tips for Managing OAB During the Holidays:
 If you’re traveling, plan to stop every 2-4 hours to reduce strain on your bladder. Drink plenty of water, but limit your intake a few hours before traveling
 If you can, avoid certain foods and beverages that can irritate the bladder such as alcohol, coffee, spicy and citrusy foods.

New research expands the number of women with a common type of early stage breast cancer who can skip chemotherapy and safely be treated with hormone-blocking therapies alone – even if their cancer has spread to some of their lymph nodes.[1] However, women whose tumors have spread to their lymph nodes are often at higher risk of worse outcomes, with the majority receiving chemotherapy.[2] Results from the RxPONDER study, one of the largest clinical trials in hormone receptor-positive, HER2 negative early breast cancer, were presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in late 2020.1
Based on these new findings, postmenopausal women whose cancer has spread to between one and three lymph nodes can avoid the side effects associated with chemotherapy if their Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® result, a genomic test which predicts chemotherapy benefit and risk of cancer recurrence, is between 0 and 25.1
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, surpassing lung cancer for the first time in 2020.[3] With the growing recognition of the importance of personalized treatment for breast cancer, genomic testing can help tailor treatment decisions to a patient’s individual tumor. Facing a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming but getting a genomic test to understand the unique biology of a patient’s tumor can help guide personalized treatment decisions.
Our guest, Dr. Deepa Halaharvi, a board-certified breast cancer surgeon at Ohio Health, can speak to the practice-changing impact of this recent study for postmenopausal women with node-positive breast cancer and the importance of genomic tests in enabling confident breast cancer treatment decisions.
As a breast cancer survivor herself, Dr. Halaharvi is in the unique position of seeing breast cancer from the perspective of a doctor as well as a patient. She will share her cancer story, including how the Oncotype DX® test informed her treatment, following her diagnosis with stage 1 HR positive, HER2 negative breast cancer at age 42, just 8 months after becoming a practicing breast surgeon. On April 14th, The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will celebrate its 61st Annual Gala, by conferring the industry’s classic and most coveted peer-recognition symbol of distinction, the Emmy®.

The New York Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NY NATAS) conducts activities that cultivate, promote and encourage understanding of, appreciation for, and public interest in the arts, crafts and sciences of television. As a professional organization serving the New York area we endeavor to educate and act as a resource to our members and the industry. We award the Emmy® for talent and ability in composition, creation, and performance of works which strive to improve the quality of television.
