If the planet is getting warmer, why is it so cold this winter?

The seeming contradiction comes up often when talking to Judah Cohen, a research scientist at M.I.T. who has been studying how global warming might also be causing colder winters in the eastern United States.

The idea, explained Dr. Cohen, is that a warming Arctic can cause a high-altitude ribbon of air called the polar vortex to stretch and wobble. That wobble can affect the flow of the jet stream that controls much of the atmospheric conditions over the United States, causing waves of high and low pressure that affect our daily weather.

For weeks, a mass of frigid air over the North Pole has dipped into eastern North America, bringing record cold temperatures for a prolonged period. In the West, a ridge of warm, dry air has stalled for weeks, panicking ski resort operators and prompting concerns for communities that rely on a healthy snowpack for drinking water in the summer months.

The polar vortex stretched and wobbled in February 2021, causing a prolonged deep freeze that killed 248 people in Texas and knocked out power for millions. The same wobble reappeared in the winter of 2024-2025 and again last month, causing blizzard conditions across the East and an icy blast.

Dr. Cohen expects the grip of cold temperatures to continue throughout February.

“It’s weird what’s going on now in the stratosphere,” Dr. Cohen said. “These stretching events happen every winter, but just how the pattern is stuck is really remarkable.”

Climate warming in the Arctic is causing this disruption of the polar vortex, Dr. Cohen said. With more snowfall in Siberia and melting sea ice in the Barents and Kara seas, just north of Norway and Russia, the ocean is feeding more heat into the atmosphere, setting up a weather pattern that leads to a burst of extreme cold in North America.

Dr. Cohen cowrote a study in the journal Science last year that linked the stretching of the polar vortex to more frequent severe winter weather in the United States in the past decade. A new analysis by Dr. Cohen and colleagues finds that a warming Arctic is also making the wobble in the polar vortex last longer.

“This is very consistent with this winter,” he said.

Not all scientists agree.

“These are interesting ideas,” said Russell Blackport, a research scientist at Environment and Climate Change Canada. “But I’m very skeptical. When I look at these papers, they’re often not that convincing.”

]]> CHATSWORTH, Ga. (WDEF)- A group of environmental scientists in northwest Georgia say recent test results of forever chemicals in North Georgia have them alarmed.

PFAS Georgia at a town hall in Chatsworth says that the majority of tests for forever chemicals across North Georgia have tested above the EPA limits.

They say 56% of water samples, 69% of soil samples, and 97% of dust samples all came back above the limit of 4 parts of forever chemicals per trillion (PPT), which scientists say can lead to a variety of health issues.

In particular, the most egregious results were:

  • A water sample of 186,310 PPT
  • A soil sample of 2,154,100 PPT
  • A dust sample of 879,500 PPT

The Water Resources Manager for PFAS Georgia, Bob Bowcock, said that some of the readings were so high their testing equipment could not register a reading.

PFAS Georgia says this is the result of the improper discarding of chemicals from carpet manufacturers, many of whom are facing ongoing lawsuits in Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, and Gordon Counties.

Bowcock gravely said, “I think that we are at the point now where you have to tell your neighbors. You have to let them know. Whether they’ve been tested or not this is real, and if you’re drinking 850 parts and you don’t tell your neighbors… It’s really eating at me.”

A proposed bill in the Georgia House of Representatives that was proposed by Dalton representative Kasey Carpenter that would have shielded carpet manufacturers from lawsuits did not pass.

There will be another town hall Friday night in Calhoun, Georgia.

Forty-four of the world’s leading climate scientists have called on Nordic policymakers to address the potentially imminent and “devastating” collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents.

In an open letter published online Monday (Oct. 21), University of Pennsylvania climatologist Michael Mann and other eminent scientists say the risks of weakening ocean circulation in the Atlantic have been greatly underestimated and warrant urgent action.

The currents in question are those forming the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a giant ocean conveyor belt that includes the Gulf Stream and transports vital heat to the Northern Hemisphere. Research shows the AMOC is slowing down and could soon reach a tipping point due to global warming, throwing Earth’s climate into chaos.

“Such an ocean circulation change would have devastating and irreversible impacts especially for Nordic countries, but also for other parts of the world,” the scientists wrote in the letter. The Nordic countries include Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden.

An AMOC collapse would lead to major cooling and extreme weather in Nordic countries, according to the letter. This would enlarge and deepen a strange “cold blob” that has already developed over the eastern North Atlantic due to the slowdown of heat-carrying currents. Collapsing ocean currents are also likely to precipitate climate impacts across the Northern Hemisphere, threatening agriculture in Northwestern Europe , according to the letter.

Other regions would feel the effects, too, the scientists said. Should the AMOC grind to a halt, it would trigger a southward shift in tropical monsoon systems — with catastrophic consequences for agriculture and ecosystems. Halted ocean currents could also further heighten sea levels along the American Atlantic coast and send marine ecosystems and fisheries into a state of “upheaval.”

Without urgent climate action, the AMOC could collapse in the next few decades , although there is huge uncertainty in predicting the timescales, according to the letter. The latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that “there is medium confidence that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation will not collapse abruptly before 2100,” but the scientists say this is an underestimate.

The IPCC estimate is not only imprecise but also worrisome, according to the letter.

“The purpose of this letter is to draw attention to the fact that only ‘medium confidence’ in the AMOC not collapsing is not reassuring, and clearly leaves open the possibility of an AMOC collapse during this century,” the scientists wrote. “Even with a medium likelihood of occurrence, given that the outcome would be catastrophic and impacting the entire world for centuries to come, we believe more needs to be done to minimize this risk.”

The scientists addressed the letter to the Nordic Council of Ministers, an intergovernmental forum tasked with promoting cooperation among the Nordic countries. They urged policymakers to seriously consider the risks posed by an AMOC collapse and to increase pressure on international partners to stay close to the targets of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to keep average global temperature rise to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) above preindustrial levels.

The 24th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) in July, the world’s largest gathering on HIV, will bring together scientists, industry leaders, advocates and community members to discuss the latest in HIV research.

Incredible advancements have been made in HIV care since the beginning of the epidemic, and today, people living with HIV who have access to medication can expect to live as long as the general population.1 With nearly half of people living with HIV in the U.S. over the age of 50, HIV research and treatment efforts have shifted to consider how to optimize care over the long-term and reduce the number of medications in a complete regimen.2

New data at AIDS 2022 will focus on innovative treatment options that address these considerations and meet the evolving needs of the HIV community. Data include two-drug regimens that reduce the number of antiretroviral medicines people are exposed to every day and treatments for long-term survivors who have developed resistance to other HIV therapies.

In light of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the healthcare industry recognizes the innovative medical strides made in lung cancer research. Importantly, this month is also a time to reflect on the 13 percent of lung cancer cases that are small cell, a disease that occurs in approximately 30,000 to 35,000 patients each year in the U.S.1 .A small cell lung cancer (SCLC) diagnosis can cause experiences of stigma, fear and hopelessness for many due to its devastating nature.
SCLC can have a profound emotional and physical impact on the lives of those it touches, and many people are hesitant to “dig deep” into online research out of worry they may affirm their worst fears when it comes to survivability.
Nearly 50% of cancer patients, including those impacted by SCLC, spend less than 10 minutes speaking with their healthcare provider when first diagnosed.2 Each and every healthcare hero – physicians, nurses, advocates, scientists and researchers alike – has a role to play in delivering more personalized attention across the continuum of SCLC care.
Montessa, a 14-year SCLC survivor and advocate, is joined with Abizer Gaslightwala, head of U.S. hematology and oncology at Jazz Pharmaceuticals to speak with the public about SCLC.

Israeli scientists say that they expect to have a Coronavirus Vaccine in just a few weeks. This is great news, especially since some health forecasters predict 60%of the world population will contract that virus that is at least 1% lethal, meaning about 50 million deaths, rivaling the 1918 outbreak of Spanish Flu.
Yet, despite this potential breakthrough, the silence is deafening from Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and other leftists calling for the boycott of Israeli exports—presumably including the cure for COVID-19 Coronavirus.
Joining us in this discussion as David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, Israel.
Q&A:
1. This is very encouraging news. Can you tell us just how close Israel is to having the Coronavirus vaccine?
Answer: Israeli Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis was just quoted in The Jerusalem Post as saying the Coronavirus vaccine could be available in 90 days.
2. Which scientific group is working on the vaccine?
Answer: The Galilee Research Institute, otherwise known as MIGAL. For the past four years, their scientists have been working on a vaccine against infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) that causes a bronchial disease affecting poultry. Its effectiveness has been proven in preclinical trials at the Veterinary Institute.
3. Why is that relevant to the Coronavirus?
Answer: The MIGAL research revealed that the genetics of the poultry coronavirus are highly similar to the coronavirus found in humans, and that it uses the same infection mechanism, and therefore, it just needs to be adapted for humans.
4. Assuming all goes well, how long will the process take until the vaccine can be used?
Answer: According to Science Minister Akunis, it could be 6-8weeks until the vaccine is produced, then several weeks of testing, and after that, another few months to get legal clearance. However, attempts are being made to fast-track the process.
1. Is this vaccine an injection? We know there are many opponents of injectable vaccines.
Answer: No. It is an oral vaccine.
1. Now, for a sensitive question: Despite this potential breakthrough by Israeli scientists, the silence is deafening from politicians on the left side of the aisle, who often call for the boycott of Israel exports—presumably including the cure for COVID-19 Coronavirus. How can this be?
Answer: Hatred of Israel outweighs the desire to help their fellow humans—even if it means the possible death of millions of people. Sadly, it’s that clear cut.

1. Let’s move on to discussion about the March 2 historic elections in Israel. If not for the Coronavirus dominating world news, this election in Israel might be the lead story in world news. Can you summarize what’s at stake?
Answer: There have already been two deadlocked elections in the past year. Israel’s right-of-center Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and left-of-center former Army Chief-of-Staff Benny Gantz. Each control a voting bloc – Left (Gantz) or Right (Netanyahu), but due to the deadlock and the controversial centrist Avigdor Lieberman, who so far has refused to join with either side, neither voting bloc has been able to put together a majority coalition, which is, after all, a pre-requisite for forming a government.
1. Can you explain to our viewers/listeners the difference between the Israeli form of government and the U.S. government?
Answer: Of course. Israel has a rather unwieldy parliamentary system with a whole bunch of smaller parties. It’s a system in which the leader of the most popular party must form a majority coalition by appealing to smaller parties that will join his coalition. Of the smaller parties, Lieberman’s was a ‘major minority’ and he is insisting on a government without religious parties, a so-called “government without God”.
1. What are Netanyahu’s options in cutting a deal with Lieberman?
Answer: He and Lieberman have had a very shaky relationship in the past and if he were to cut a deal with Lieberman, it would likely involve forcing a bold compromise between Lieberman and the religious parties.
2. What are likely options for governing coalitions? Couldn’t Lieberman kiss and makeup, cut a deal, and join Netanyahu?
Answer: It is possible. Despite Liberman’s uncompromising style of speaking, he has made many political compromises in the past.
5. Tell us about the Trump Deal of the Century and the land annexation and the agreement to help the Palestinians?
Answer: The map looks a bit like a Gerry mandered congressional district, and if a Palestinian state were to be created, it would be a serious security threat for Israelis who travel those roads. Having said that, the plan will not be accepted by the Palestinian Authority, because it demands that they stop paying salaries to the families of imprisoned terrorists, it demands that they accept Israel as the Jewish state, and it demands that they disarm. These are all reasonable demands to create a true atmosphere of peace, but they won’t accept it.
1. Tell us about your book, “Trump and the Jews” and the parts that deal with what we’re seeing play out in the Israeli election scene.

In the past 40 years, a Chinese revolution had been going on in the name of reform and opening up. The result is that a powerful China was born. Not only has China become the second largest world economic power, but China’s soft power is permeating every aspect of Chinese life and has been re-shaping China’s corporations and their cultures. In the 80s and 90s, while China was faltering in its direction forward and growing in all areas through trial and error in the daunting face of Western cultures, technology advancements and management efficiency, today’s China, in its newly found confidence, methodology, wealth, and in its lessons learned, is firm on its principles and directions. No one has the right to do so,” said Ms Ma Xiaoqiu, President and Co-Founder of Ding Yifeng-the three Chinese characters Ding Yifeng 鼎益丰 stand for prosperity, affluence, and harvest. To Ding Yifeng people, stock market is like a game of confidence and mass psychology play a key role. “Even rocket scientists are causing an avalanche and Occupy Wall Street is a social media phenomenal, let alone us. We are small potatoes and we cannot afford to lose,” said one of the drivers to the author. Mind you, the driver was worth 70 million rmb (10 mil USD) today after investing in the company’s cautiously selected two Hong Kong listed companies.
Ding Yifeng owns four Hong Kong listed companies, one of them-HKStock Code 00612- had the world record performance of 1230% return in 2018 and was recommended by four major world leading index, including MSCI China Index, Hengsheng, Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Four years ago, Ding Yifeng started to buy 612 stocks on the secondary market when the latter were traded 40 cents per share. In two years’ time, it turned from trash to cash. And the stock price soared to 28 HK dollars per share in late November, 2018.
It just didn’t happen overnight. It was planned to win.

Registered on Jan. 1, 2011, with eight staff members, Ding Yifeng took a tiny hotel room in Pengnian Square, Shenzhen Luohu district, that has a view of Hong Kong skyline. First day in the office, President Ma said that one day they would make it to Hong Kong. All eight of them believed it. Maybe, that is what we would call the power of dream? Or power of a story Ms. Ma once read and learned by heart when she was 11 years old. That story was A Foolish Old Man Who Moved the Mountains 愚公移山. Like all the Chinese kids born in the early 1960s, Ms. Ma lost three and half years of elementary education. The schools boarded up for “making the revolution” of accusing one another for being a counter revolutionary. At the age of 11, the revolution was over and it was time to go to school. Ms. Ma, now 11, could not read nor write. What would it matter anyway to place her at 3rd Grade or 4th Grade? Give her an extra year to catch up. The teacher placed Ma at Grade 3.
“The reason I was not kicked out was because I could recite the three Old Articles by Chairman Mao Zedong. I learned them by heart and recited them to my neighbors on the streets: Serve the People 为人民服务; A Foolish Old Man Who Moved the Mountains愚公移山; and Norman Bethune纪念白求恩. These are all very difficult things to do and these heroes did it—to push the comrade out while oneself was buried alive in the coal mine; to move the mountains; and to die for not one’s own country! True, I missed the basic training of how to spell and write, but I learned to always put others in front. That is a valuable lesson, with which we built a billion dollar company.”
That was true. With her partner, Chairman Sui Guangyi and Ding Yifeng people, in under 8 years, they built Ding Yifeng, an asset management firm with 80 billion RMB under management and the investments were strategically made in six major industries, namely, culture, high tech, investment banking, gold, health and tourism.

The story of Ma Xiaoqiu is not only the story of a contemporary Chinese woman CEO, but also the collective carrying capacity of Chinese women entrepreneurs who nurture and succeed. The Ding Yifeng Group, headed by Ma at the helm, is a model in execution. Her recent speech at UN not only reflects the unique Chinese value systems, but a strong personal statement that one’s fate is connected with the fate of the country. Her speech “Chasing the Sun in My Heart” tells a story from a personal dream to a national dream, from a new angle by adding the company data.
It was impressive.
The book is divided into seven parts with a full text of 250 pages + supplementary readings + 35 photos of the milestone years. It tries to tell a true story from a Chinese perspective and from a Western perspective. When faced with the task of learning from others and also from own culture, each of us is faced with the task of listening to the symphony of life with an open heart and an open mind.
