When breast cancer is detected earlier, the disease is easier to treat successfully.1 Patients diagnosed in the early localized stage — meaning the cancer has not spread — have seen 5-year relative survival rates of 99 percent.2

Current research suggests that a reduction in breast cancer screenings at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to fewer early-stage and more late-stage breast cancer diagnoses in 2020 (latest statistics available) than in 2019, according to a study published by the journal JAMA Network Open.3

Many people experienced delayed or cancelled mammograms because of the pandemic, and these disruptions may have contributed to later-stage breast cancer diagnoses, when the disease is more difficult to treat.3,4

While mammography screenings rebounded overall by July 2020, the cumulative deficit of missed mammograms may have important public health consequences,5 including the furthering of health disparities.6

Since 2021, breast cancer diagnoses have exceeded lung cancer diagnoses, becoming the most diagnosed cancer worldwide.7,8

In the United States, it is estimated that about 287,850 women in 2022 will be diagnosed with breast cancer.9 Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the U.S., and this year it’s estimated that about 30% of all newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers.10

For those facing a breast cancer diagnosis, the treatment that follows can be challenging and time consuming. Additionally, the type of breast cancer a patient has — including triple negative, HER2+ or HR+ — impacts the type of treatment they’ll receive.

Dr. Ahmed Elkhanany, a breast cancer expert at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will discuss the latest news surrounding delays in breast cancer screenings and some of the recent treatment options. A patient share her experience too.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of this special day being celebrated Sunday, June 5, 2022, and provides a good time to remind everyone that cancer doesn’t wait, and cancer screenings, treatments, and routine healthcare appointments should not be delayed. Some screenings help in both finding cancer early and preventing cancer.

CDC reports that an estimated 41% of U.S. adults delayed or avoided medical care during the pandemic.

And according to a 2021 article, breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer screenings dropped by more than 80% during the pandemic. While screenings have since improved, they have not returned to normal levels. These missed screenings mean people will be diagnosed at a later stage of cancer when it’s more difficult to treat, and experts have predicted these delays will result in an excess of 10,000 deaths from breast and colorectal cancer alone.

CDC urges Americans not to wait for symptoms when it comes to cancer, including breast, cervical, colon and lung cancers. The CDC Foundation and its Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients program developed a PSA, poster campaign, and a Cancer Screening Guide to help educate and encourage people to get cancer screening tests that can prevent or detect cancer early. Many of those resources are also available in Spanish.

In honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, CDC’s Dr. Lisa Richardson discusses the need for Americans to return to their routine healthcare appointments, cancer screenings, and cancer treatments.

Lisa Richardson, MD, MPH, is the director, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has reached 90-percent in recent years, for women with metastatic breast cancer — where the cancer has spread to other parts of the body — that rate is only 28-percent. And when COVID-19 caused delays in routine mammograms, doctors saw a jump in these advanced cases. Here now to talk about the latest developments and why breast cancer awareness needs to happen year-round, is Dr. Ramaswamy (RAH-muh-swah-mee) from The Ohio State University Medical Center.

What should people be aware of in terms of breast cancer screening and COVID-19?

Can you tell us about your experience treating people diagnosed with MBC? What are the biggest unmet needs and how is the treatment landscape changing?

What are some of the major challenges in MBC today?

Why is it so important for women to not delay routine mammogram screenings?

Where can the MBC community go for more information and support?

BIO-Dr. Bhuvana Ramaswamy is a breast cancer oncologist, physician-scientist at the James. She leads the breast medical oncology section and is also the Chair of the Clinical Scientific Review Committee for the James. Her research interests are in drug-resistance and racial disparities in cancer outcomes. Her lab focuses on finding the molecular link between breastfeeding and risk of breast cancer. She was named as one the “top 27 breast medical oncologists” in the nation by Forbes in 2017 and recently received the Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians Award.

Jean made an appearance at a private dinner hosted by Buhl attended by LuAnn de Lesseps, and Pamela O’Connor; then joined other movie-goers that dined at the all new Union Sushi & Steak a modern take on the steakhouses of old; who donated a portion of proceeds to The Southampton Animal Shelter. The sold-out socially-distanced event, touted by Vanity Fair as “honest, heartfelt, and inspirational,” launches a nation-wide tour of the film about philanthropy.

On September 26, 1983, an incident unfolded at a Soviet nuclear early warning facility that nearly led to a nuclear war by accident.

The Man Who Saved the World is a feature length movie about Stanislav Petrov, a former lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who prevented the nuclear false alarm incident from becoming a nuclear holocaust.
The movie recreates those tense times in the Soviet nuclear facility, and then follows Petrov 30 years later when the incident is revealed to the West and Petrov is invited for the first time to the United Nations and the USA.

The movie has won a number of awards including the 2015 Sundance Film Festival Best Feature Film. Click here for the movie trailer. Click here for a short, powerful interview with Stanislav Petrov by PNND Council Member Jonathan Granoff.

Reconnect To Something Bigger

Presents the Film

There is a growing movement of people who draw on values, creativity, and
the power of human consciousness to clarify and guide their financial
choices. People want their money life (where they earn, spend and invest
their money) to better reflect the values espoused in their personal and
spiritual lives. They want their money life to have impact.

Join us for a screening of the 20 minute version of the powerful and
inspirational feature documentary film PLANETARY. PLANETARY is a
cross-continental cinematic journey that challenges viewers to reconsider
our relationship with our home and asks us to rethink our relationship with
ourselves, each other and the world around us – to remember that we are a
Planetary community made up of Planetary citizens.

In a stunning visual exploration, this documentary film interweaves imagery
from NASA Apollo and Space Shuttle missions with visions of the Milky Way,
Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas, and the cacophonous sounds of
downtown Tokyo and Manhattan, with intimate interviews from renowned
astronauts and environmental experts. PLANETARY sheds a new light on the
