NYC Second ChanceRescue will be hosting their 3rd annual Rescue Ball onThursday April 27th, 2023. The charity aims to raise critical fundsto help continue their mission of providing second chances to critically ill,injured, and abused dogs and cats.

The evening will be Hosted by Tony and Grammy Award-Nominated Actress and Singer, Orfeh With SpecialGuests Melissa Gorga and Constantine Maroulis. The evening features a vegan menu, specialtycocktails, live and silent auctions, and entertainment, followed by dancing tomusic by DJ GEO ROC.

A successful business man and entrepreneur, loving husband and father, and avid basketball-lover, Mark Moore had it all. But in May 2007, at the age of 46, his entire life changed when he suffered two strokes. After spending a month in a medically-induced coma, Mark underwent intensive rehabilitation, including speech therapy, physical therapy, and having to relearn basic life skills such as writing a check and tying his shoes. Now, 10 years later, he has made a near-full recovery due to extensive rehabilitation, the expertise of caregivers, and what he calls the three Fs: family, friends, and faith.

A Stroke of Faith tells of Mark’s journey from extremely successful businessman to unexpected stroke victim to survivor and educator. Since recovering, he has dedicated his life to teaching others about stroke prevention and recovery, giving back to his community through extensive philanthropy, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

• Have supported “All-Island Handicapped Sports”, disabilities awareness programs and horseback riding
• Most recently they have made a special effort to support art programs for special needs children

The monies donated will be used to enhance their Saturday Respite program the only arts-based Saturday Respite Program in Nassau County specifically created for children with special needs.

Then it was down to business to learn about 3 more qualified charities and vote on the next charity who would receive our members’ donation.  We are pleased to let you know that the charity is the Hospice Care Network.  They will be presenting how they will use our $6,000 donation at our next meeting – January 14, 2014!

The Hospice Care Network’s mission is to enable people to live in peace and with dignity in a caring environment during the final stages of life by offering care and comfort both to them and to those with whom they share their lives.  They develop and provide individualized programs of care and supportive services during dying, death and bereavement that enhance quality of life by addressing physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs.

The vision of the Hospice Care Network is for people living with advanced illness to have a meaningful experience – one in which they have the time to have meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones – because every day counts.

The Hospice Care Network is a not for profit healthcare organization serving people and families in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.  Hospice Care Network has been helping people since 1988.  As a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Hospice Care Network is committed to the highest quality of care.

100 Women Who Care about Long Island is a new philanthropic group formed for local women who are interested in supporting our communities by contributing to Long Island charities together as a group to increase the donation impact.

As individuals it is difficult to make a very large impact, but as a group we have the ability to contribute to the growth of our communities in ways that we never before thought possible.  The size of our quarterly donations is limited only by the members we have!

Our next meeting is Tuesday January 14, 2014 from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm at Jewel Restaurant in Melville (on Route 110 at the LIE).  After the meeting we invite you to join us for some socializing and networking.  There will be complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar available.

IMAGINE PEACE is Yoko Ono’s worldwide initiative of anti-violence. In the film, the words “Imagine Peace” are written in 24 languages set over the tranquil imagery of a blue-sky background. The piece has been transformed into a multi-channel work specifically for Times Square, and spreads the message of peace across Times Square’s monumental screens simultaneously.

Says Yoko Ono: “It’s Time for Action, Action is Peace. Think Peace, Act Peace, Spread Peace, IMAGINE PEACE! Together we have the power to change the world. I LOVE YOU!!”

Yoko Ono‘s “Imagine Peace” is part of the second annual Make Music Winter which, like its summer version, has free, live, outdoor music happening all over NYC on Friday (12/21). Almost all of them are participatory and you can be a part of it (some require musical skills, some do not).

Other notable Make Music Winter events include “James Holt: Thru-Line” (2 – 3 PM), where “amateur and professional string players disperse to each of the Brooklyn-bound G train subway platforms. Over the course of an hour, every time a train arrives, musicians will step in and out of the front car to give subway riders a continuous, tag-team performance of the famous Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G major.”

There’s also Phil Kline‘s ambient boombox work “Peregrine” starting at 7 PM in front of BAM and migrating through Fort Greene, Brooklyn till 7:45. Boomboxes will be provided to the first 50 participants, and if you bring your own they’ll provide you with a cassette.
