Thank you for your email. I esteem the efforts of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. I grew up in the Kennedy era with John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and as a youth was witness to the tragedy of their passing along with the civil rights great, Dr. Martin Luther King. I have been a long time member of the Soka Gakkai International and had the opportunity to benefit from the inestimable efforts of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda for peace through culture and education. Former President Kennedy is noted by Dr. Ikeda in his 30 volume work, The New Human Revolution. They were to have met but as history would have it President Kennedy was assasinated before that fateful day.

I am forwarding Dr. Ikeda’s 2021 Peace Proposal to the United Nations. Each year he submits a proposal to that sovereign body. I hope this will be a resource to assist in guiding your mission to build our country into a faithful nation contributing to the safety, health and happiness of the world community.

Last month, on behalf of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, we asked you for your thoughts on a question that is at the heart of our mission: What do you hope will change in America in 2021—and how do you hope the new United States Senate will help drive that change?

I’m writing today, first, to thank the hundreds of you who took the time to offer your thoughts, hopes, and dreams for this new year in our national political life. We are grateful for your eloquent, heartfelt, and inspiring responses.

I also want to share with you two articles we’re publishing based on your responses, describing not only the most pressing issues you want to see the Senate take on, but also the common call we saw for more respect, civility, and compromise in our public discussions. We also recognized a theme several of you voiced that we had not expected: A belief that the 2020 elections and their aftermath, particularly the many lies about widespread election fraud and the violent insurrection attempting to overturn the certification of the Electoral College ballots in Congress, documented a need for more and better civics education for all Americans, especially young people. Civics education is a fundamental part of the Kennedy Institute’s mission, and this winter and spring, even as we have had to close our building to visitors because of COVID-19, we are making slots available for 10,000 students to participate in our virtual civics education classes by ZOOM–opportunities, by the way, we hope you will share with teachers you know.

As promised, we are conveying your messages to members of our New England congressional delegation to make sure your voices and your concerns are heard by them and help shape both their priorities and how they go about the critical work of legislating. We will be sharing these articles and messages on social media with the hashtag #HopesFor2021. Your responses are also enormously valuable to the Institute staff in assessing where and how to invest our time and resources in 2021.

Don Peebles spoke highly of his daughter’s motivation to support Give Back for Special Equestrians. He introduces Chloe by saying, “I am so incredibly proud of you for not only your accomplishments as a competitive equestrian, but in your compassion for others and your desire to share your lifelong love of horses through your involvement with this charitable organization.”

Chloe Peebles, who has maintained a successful 14-year equestrian career, followed suit in thanking her parents and guests for joining in support of Give Back for Special Equestrians. She says, “Give Back for Special Equestrians is changing the lives of so many and to be able to support such a wonderful cause within the equestrian community has always been a dream of mine. For 14 years, especially during these past teenage years, I have come to realize and appreciate how impactful the relationship with horses and the equestrian culture can be.” Eloquently, Chloe expressed her passion for horseback riding and her fondness of the majestic animal, further describing the pivotal role the sport has played in her life. Chloe also thanked First Blue Stables, who helped sponsor the event, for all the training and support over the years. Her heartfelt words brought smiles to the faces of attendees and warmed the spirits of donors prepared to give back.

CEO and founder Sissy DeMaria-Koehne, alongside co-founders Dr. Heather Kuhl and Isabel Ernst, started the all-volunteer organization Give Back for Special Equestrians on a mission to raise funds to provide therapeutic horseback riding and equine-assisted scholarships for children and veterans with Autism, Spina Bifida, Paralysis and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among other disabilities. Sharing a passion for horses, they wanted to bring the joys of horsemanship, in addition to the life-changing benefits of equine therapy, to those facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. The transformative benefits of equine therapy help people with disabilities improve balance, posture, hand-eye coordination, as well as self-esteem, self-confidence and self-control.

“Thanks to the benevolence of our title sponsor, Don, Katrina and Chloe Peebles of The Peebles Corporation, Rolls-Royce and all of our generous supporting sponsors, we are able to pay forward our mutual joy for horses and horsemanship to offer more children and veterans living with mental, cognitive or emotional disabilities direct access to ‘horsepower’ that heals,” said Sissy DeMaria-Koehne.

As part of the evening’s festivities, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented a $5,000 donation to Give Back for Special Equestrian, supporting The Peebles Corporation’s and Give Back for Special Equestrians’ $30,000 donation to New York City therapeutic stable partner, GallopNYC. Accepting the donation, Executive Director Nicole Cicogna of GallopNYC was joined by accomplished equestrian Jukai Sugarman and her mother Tomoko Sawamura, who is also a volunteer of the nonprofit organization. The support of the generous contributions made by the Peebles Corporation and charity partner Give Back for Special Equestrians will provide therapeutic riding programs for children and adults with disabilities.

Philanthropist Katrina Peebles presented the opportunity to give back as a combined effort to provide at least 25 annual riding scholarships to riders like Jukai. One-by-one, donors raised their hands compelled to support Give Back for Special Equestrians. Guests also enjoyed a lively auction of a round-trip flight from Manhattan to the Hamptons on Blade aviation, an event sponsor. Another lucky winner received a three-night stay at Rosemary’s Cottage exquisite vacation cottage filled with historic, old-world charm and modern comfort donated by The Fisher Island Club in Miami. The event was catered by Shiraz, one of New York’s premier event companies, providing decadent hors d’oeuvres throughout the elegant evening.

As soon as her plane touched down in America, Riley knew she wanted to go back. At the age of 14, Riley started a non-profit, Generation Next, to help collect school supplies for Kenyan schools and returned the following year with 200 backpacks filled with donated supplies.

“I had no idea that God was going to use what happened at that school, with those kids, to begin weaving Africa into the fabric of my story,” says Riley. “God put a love for Kenyan children in my heart and gave me an impulse to want to help them.”

In Riley Unlikely: With Simple Child-Like Faith, Amazing Things Can Happen, Riley brings readers on her journeys to Kenya and the unexpected hardships and disappointments that showed Riley how to truly trust in God. From the first smells when her plane touches down to God planting the idea of opening a school in Kibwezi, Kenya, Riley shows the immense impact one life can have and encourages readers to find their own passions. Not everyone will be called to Kenya to build schools and community centers, but everyone can do something to make a profound difference.

From the very beginning, Riley had a vision that ordinary people can have extra ordinary impact, one life at a time. That dream carried her through several big twists and turns, but she always saw the beauty of God working in mysterious ways.

Riley’s focus turned to helping Kenyan orphans after she was diagnosed at 16 with a rare condition that left her unable to have biological children. She saw that even though she was not

able to have her own children, God had put hundreds of Kenyan children in her life to love and take care of.

Today, Riley is 19, and works full-time for her ministry and can be found at Riley’s Treasures, Generation Next’s thrift store and food pantry in Branson, when she is not in Kenya. Generation Next opened a school in Kibwezi, Kenya and in January bought a 7000 square foot building with five acres to use for a community center. They will teach women to sew, provide a feeding program, a safe house for kids and a sports complex for the kids to play on as well as farming. She and her new husband Graham plan to live part time in Kenya when Graham is finished with college. They will make their home at the community center, to oversee the day to day operations.

Riley Banks is the founder and executive director of Generation Next, a non-profit she established at the age of 14. Generation Next has built and oversees a school in Kibwezi, Kenya, and runs a thrift shop and food pantry in Branson, Missouri, to fund operations. Riley’s heart is for Africa and for reminding every young person that they can do more to change the world than they could ever imagine. She lives in Branson, MO with her husband Graham.

While most people recognize PD symptoms that impact movement, like slowness and tremors or stiffness, the disease also involves a range of non-motor symptoms that can significantly impact the lives of those affected.

Jo-Ann was diagnosed 16 years ago and only recently learned that symptoms like fatigue, difficulty sleeping or memory problems can be associated directly with PD. As an outspoken and active advocate for the PD community, Jo-Ann has made it her mission to educate others and serve as an example of the importance of speaking to healthcare providers about all symptoms.
