Twice a year, time reminds us who’s really in charge.

And then, once a year, we steal an hour back from the dark.

Daylight Saving Time isn’t just about clocks springing forward or falling back — it’s about light winning, about stretching the day like a golden ribbon across the sky. It’s about that first evening when the sun lingers just a little longer, brushing buildings in amber, turning ordinary streets into movie sets.

Time is the one thing we can’t negotiate with. It doesn’t care about fame, money, or status. It moves — steady, relentless, democratic. But Daylight Saving Time? That’s our tiny rebellion. Our collective decision to chase the light.

And if you’re going to celebrate stealing back the sun, you do it with the best of the best.

You gather the visionaries, the artists, the dreamers — the ones who understand that an extra hour of light is an extra hour to create, to perform, to love, to build legacy. The composers who turn daylight into symphonies. The singers who stretch a sunset into a standing ovation. The storytellers who know that every second counts because every second is currency.

Daylight Saving Time is a reminder:

We don’t just mark time — we make something of it.

It’s cocktails on rooftops while the sky blushes pink.

It’s rehearsals that run long because inspiration doesn’t clock out.

It’s laughter that spills into the evening air, unhurried and unapologetic.

We don’t fear the ticking clock.

We toast to it.

Because the best of the best know something most people forget — time is not meant to be managed. It’s meant to be lived. Stretched. Celebrated.

So, when the clocks shift and the light lingers, step into it.

Stand taller.

Dream bigger.

Create louder.

There is something extraordinary about watching the world gather in the center of the world.

Every April 22, Earth Day transforms Times Square into a global green stage — a place where music, environmental awareness, and collective responsibility collide in the most powerful way. Under the leadership of producer and humanitarian Paul Sladkus, the flashing lights of Broadway become a beacon for sustainability, hope, and action.

Artists perform. Activists speak. Screens that usually sell products instead amplify purpose. In a place known for movement, Earth Day asks us to think about preservation — the air we breathe, the oceans we depend on, the planet we call home. It is celebration with conscience. Energy with intention.

And then, in September, something even more profound happens.

Pause for Peace.

Also orchestrated by Paul Sladkus in Times Square, this gathering shifts the frequency from environmental awareness to global unity. Inspired by the spirit of international peace initiatives, the event invites the world — quite literally — to stop for a moment. In the middle of honking taxis, tourist chatter, and digital billboards, thousands come together to breathe… reflect… and stand for harmony.

It is a rare and moving sight: Times Square in intentional stillness.

A symbolic heartbeat for humanity.

Music once again plays a central role — because music crosses borders faster than politics ever could. Performers lend their voices to messages of compassion, non-violence, and understanding. Peace ambassadors, community leaders, and artists stand shoulder to shoulder, reminding us that unity is not naïve — it is necessary.

Earth Day calls us to protect our planet.

Pause for Peace calls us to protect each other.

Together, these Times Square gatherings reflect Paul Sladkus’ belief that entertainment can be transformational. That stages can become platforms. That crowds can become communities.

In the very place where the world meets, he creates moments where the world listens.

And for a few luminous hours each year, Times Square doesn’t just shine.

It heals.

Eagles don’t live by how they fly but by how they adapt and soar in collaboration with their extemporaneous environments.

The term we humans call “eagle eye” comes to the aid of our winged hunters by helping them see where they are going with laser-sharp focus. Their nose is not only able to smell what they are after but also is masterfully sharpened to tame their prey. Their wings have their built-in intelligence to trust how to get from here to there and anywhere in between. Eagles, from a young age, get conditioned to harsh environments. Some conditions may raise awareness through failure during their endeavors. In turn, this causes an “Eagle eye” hunt with discipline and precision. In life, we can decide to make our own choices, or we can allow our circumstances to make us.

We can feel emotion without ruining somebody else’s day. When we stay in a behavior that projects negativity it’s a burial where the only friend that comes out is pity. Everyone that participates is in the pity party. There is no inspiration in that! When you switch your intentions to positive priorities it opens a pathway to the tree of knowledge. The impact of unhappiness can be profound, affecting relationships, work, and overall quality of life. So, it’s great you have this article so you can create the value of owning your space.
In Celebration of the “Year of the Horse,” the Board of Directors of the 24th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (HKDBF-NY) announce that this Free Multicultural Festival and Sporting Event will be held Saturday, August 9th & Sunday, August 10th, 2014. Featuring cash & prizes for competitors in this year’s US Dragon Boat Open Championship. New festival events consist of several Special/Invitational Cup races. Celebrating the anniversary of the World’s Fair, we are holding the World’s Fair Municipal Invitational race featuring various teams from our elected officials, Mayor De Blasio, Queens Borough President Katz, Congresswoman Meng and Assemblyman Kim’s office were invited to field a team as well as the NYC government agencies NYPD, NYFD, DEP and Parks Department. Other special races include the Hong Kong Family Invitational, The Health Care Invitational and The Educational Invitational. This year’s Corporate Invitational looks to be a good one, with ten Corporate Teams joining us to race for their companies. The Festival will be held at Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York rain or shine. Admission is free. HKDBF-NY, an international, multi-cultural celebration and sporting event, the largest multicultural Festival in New York and the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. HKDBF NY keeps up the age old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in colorful, custom made teak boats, which are virtual works of art gliding on water. Custom made by a small coterie of craftsmen in Hong Kong, weighing one ton each, colorfully painted with a Dragon head at the front and Dragon tail at the rear, the boats are piloted by up to 20 crewmen, including 18 paddlers, a drummer and steers person. For twenty-three successful years HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse, multi-cultural audience of more than 50,000 attendees throughout North America. With a record number of teams participating 188+ well-trained teams, involving more than 2,500 participants competing from across the U.S. and Canada, this year’s festival is expected to be notable in its scale and fierce competition. With cash & prizes at stake for the US Dragon Boat Open Championships, the festival takes place over two days on the site of the 1964 World’s Fair, featuring events for the entire family. The opening day parade at noon on Saturday, Aug. 9th will be followed by the New York City Heritage Championship Races. The U.S. Dragon Boat Open Championship finals will be held Saturday/Sunday, with the teams vigorously competing for their share of the cash & prizes. Racing starts at 9:00 a.m. and events last throughout the day until approximately 5:00 p.m. each day, rain or shine. Other festival events consist of the media invitational, corporate youth, charity race, women’s invitational, and sponsors challenge, a photo contest as well as presentations on the Main Stage of traditional Chinese arts, martial arts demonstrations, the traditional Dragon dance, musical and other diverse performances and demonstrations of folk arts and crafts. An International food court, and booths staffed by sponsors of the event, many of whom will be giving away promotional items, and many community-based organizations participating help make for a unique, action packed, multi-cultural, New York weekend. The tradition of Dragon Boat Racing is an annual Chinese rite commemorating the idealistic poet and reformer Qu Yuan who drowned himself in the third century B.C. to protest against his emperor’s policies. The locals raced in their boats in an attempt to rescue the poet. To prevent fish and water dragons from eating his body, the locals beat their drums and splashed their paddles. This was the beginning of Dragon Boat Racing Admission to the HKDBF-NY is Free, Events take place Rain or Shine. Directions to the Festival by car – take the Long Island Expressway to Van Wyck Expressway to exit 11 south, then stay on service road to the Park. Parking is severely limited. Please take the MTA or car pool. Directions to the Festival by bus/subway –Again this year we’ve worked with the MTA to insure easy and safe transportation to the Festival site. Festival goers can use their MetroCard to take the #7 Train to the CitiField stop and transfer from there to special MTA shuttle buses that will take them directly to the Festival site, or they can walk from the CitiField stop (about 15 minutes) or take the colorful park trolley to the festival site.
Standing in a sea of supporters dressed in purple – the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer and the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) today joined a coalition of advocates, elected officials, non-profit leaders and survivors to ‘shine the light’ on an issue that will impact nearly one in four American women in their lifetime.

Twelve major Times Square billboards, including ABC Supersign, American Eagle Outfitters, Bank of America, City Outdoor/TSQ, Clear Channel Spectacolor, Viacom, Nasdaq, Forever 21, Thomson Reuters and Walgreens/ New Tradition Media were simultaneously illuminated purple, in the annual event that is sponsored by Borough President Stringer and is part of OPDV’s statewide Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign.

“If tonight’s gathering convinces just one victim of domestic violence to speak up and seek help, this event will have made a difference,” said Borough President Stringer. “Domestic violence is a scourge that can and must be eliminated–and our responsibility to protect and support survivors of domestic violence will continue long after the lights tonight have faded. If victims are brave enough to come forward, we as a City must guarantee that the resources they need – from housing to counseling to protection – will always be there for them.”

Borough President Stringer noted that in New York City alone last year, police officers responded to 263,207 incidents of domestic violence, according to the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence.

“I am thrilled to once again watch as the Times Square billboards turn purple marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” Gwen Wright, Executive Director of the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence said. “I can’t think of a more symbolic way of shining a light on domestic violence, pulling it out of the darkness once and for all. As New Yorkers, let’s stand together to speak out against domestic violence whenever and wherever we can.”

“One of the great problems with domestic violence is how normalized it has become and invisible,” said Eve Ensler, Tony Award winning playwright and activist. “I celebrate the ‘Shine the Light’ campaign which has bravely and consistently pulled open the curtains, bringing this devastating violence to light. It has literally turned the City purple, inviting women to come forward with their stories, to demand justice and safety and make domestic violence obscene and obsolete. I am very proud to stand and rise with them on October 7th in Times Square.”

“Our participating Times Square sign operators and advertisers are honored to use our digital displays to focus attention on the issue of domestic violence,” said Fred Rosenberg, President of the Times Square Advertising Coalition. “New Yorkers and visitors will surely pause from their busy evening schedule to embrace the message of the Shine the Light campaign as there are no lights brighter than the lights of Times Square.”

“I am honored to join Scott Stringer and thousands of concerned citizens again this year to shine Times Square’s brightest lights to bring awareness in hopes of ending domestic violence,” said Cristyne Nicholas, Chair of the Broadway Association.

“Intimate partner violence often occurs behind closed doors; we must put a spotlight on this issue so that no one suffers in silence at the hands of their loved ones,” said Yolanda B. Jimenez, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence.

“It is critical that we shine the light on domestic violence every single day,” said Assembly Member Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan). “Though the number of domestic violence homicides has decreased in the last year, 58% of all female homicide victims aged 16 years and older were killed by an intimate partner, making clear that we still have a long way to go to ensure that young women and girls are safe. I commend Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer for his career-long commitment to eradicating domestic violence through his work to literally and figuratively ‘Shine the Light on Domestic Violence.’”

“Domestic violence happens behind closed doors but it affects our children, our families, neighbors and communities,” said Council Member Gale A. Brewer. “Tonight, we gather in commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in recognition of our shared responsibility: if you hear or see something ….say something. You may save a life! Domestic violence is a problem that impacts New Yorkers in all walks of life, and I applaud Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) for organizing this evening’s program and for all of their efforts to combat domestic violence.”

Borough President Stringer, a longtime champion of women’s rights, has a lengthy track record in the battle against domestic violence. As an Assembly member, he authored a landmark 1994 bill mandating that police officers, rather than victims, serve orders of protection for battered women. In 1996, he authored a law banning insurance discrimination against domestic violence victims. Stringer also fought to pass the state’s first anti-stalking legislation, and he supported the Safe Harbor Act to protect those forced into domestic trafficking.

The Borough President is now partnering with Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. and the Mayor’s Office to establish the Manhattan Family Justice Center, which will offer comprehensive legal and support services for victims of domestic violence under one roof and is currently under construction.

Borough President Stringer has also issued policy reports focusing on sexual harassment and assault on New York City subways, as well as the impact of economic abuse—an often overlooked form of domestic violence—on victims. He has also launched a website of resources available for victims of domestic violence, which can be found at mpbo.org/shinethelight.

The Manhattan Borough President’s Office offers constituent services and support to victims of domestic violence, including people who are fleeing abusive homes. His office assists them in seeking housing, social services, and referrals to other agencies and community organizations.

At today’s event, the Borough President’s Domestic Violence Task Force as well as his staff distributed resource cards offering information about domestic violence and crisis hotline phone numbers.

The Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (www.opdv.ny.gov) is charged with improving the response of state and local communities to domestic violence. OPDV provides guidance to Executive staff on policy and legislation; conducts statewide community outreach and public education programs; and trains professionals on addressing domestic violence in a wide array of disciplines, including child welfare, law enforcement and health care.
