GRANTS AWARDED TO THE JUNIOR JAZZ FOUNDATION AND SIX STRINGS HEROES AT JEFFERSON BARRACKS

 The Les Paul Foundation, whose mission is to honor and share the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul by supporting music education, engineering and innovation as well as medical research, announced that it has awarded grants to the Junior Jazz Foundation, Litchfield Performing Arts and Six Strings Heroes at Jefferson Barracks, three different organizations but with a shared vision of the legacy of Les Paul. Throughout his life, Les Paul was an innovator who changed the face of the music industry with the inventions of multi-track recording and the solid body electric guitar.  He supported music education, engineering, innovation as well as medical research.

The Junior Jazz Foundation of Hilton Head, South Carolina will receive funding for its annual Junior Jazz Camp. With funding from the Les Paul Foundation, a permanent jazz guitar program will be added to the camp.  Students will learn about Les Paul and honor him by performing his music.  The camp will also hold annual Les Paul evenings at The Jazz Corner.

The Junior Jazz Foundation (JJF) is the philanthropic outreach effort of the Jazz Corner and under the umbrella of the prestigious Community Foundation of the Low Country, a quality organization with tremendous experience in managing the philanthropic work of individuals, families and businesses. Six String Heroes at Jefferson Barracks in O’Fallon, Missouri is also the recipient of a Les Paul Foundation grant and will receive funding to provide free guitar lessons and guitars to injured U.S. military veterans. Typical students have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), amputations or traumatic brain injuries suffered during combat.

Playing the guitar helps with memory, physical dexterity and provides a positive social connection through music. Les Paul served in the U.S. military during World War II and often made time to visit injured veterans.  Six String Heroes at Jefferson Barracks is a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and assist injured U.S. military veterans through free guitar lessons and guitars. The Litchfield Performing Arts of Litchfield, Connecticut will award need-based scholarships with the funding from the Les Paul Foundation. Students come from over half of the states in the United States and 20 foreign countries to attend the sessions. Nicki Parrott, a member of the Les Paul Trio will also offer a Master Class dedicated to Les Paul’s music and life, and give a public performance of Les’ music and arrangements during the camp’s sessions. Litchfield Performing Arts (LPA) is a charitable organization founded in 1981 whose mission is to change lives through the arts. LPA does this through various programs including the Litchfield Jazz Festival, Litchfield Jazz Camp and Project Poetry Live!’

Litchfield Jazz Fest is held annually the second weekend in August at the Goshen Fairgrounds in Goshen. The festival does not just offer top-notch jazz music, but is a true outdoor summer experience for the entire family. The monies donated will be used to enhance their Saturday Respite program the only arts-based Saturday Respite Program in Nassau County specifically created for children with special needs.

Then it was down to business to learn about 3 more qualified charities and vote on the next charity who would receive our members’ donation.  We are pleased to let you know that the charity is the Hospice Care Network.  They will be presenting how they will use our $6,000 donation at our next meeting – January 14, 2014!

The Hospice Care Network’s mission is to enable people to live in peace and with dignity in a caring environment during the final stages of life by offering care and comfort both to them and to those with whom they share their lives.  They develop and provide individualized programs of care and supportive services during dying, death and bereavement that enhance quality of life by addressing physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs.

The vision of the Hospice Care Network is for people living with advanced illness to have a meaningful experience – one in which they have the time to have meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones – because every day counts.

On Memorial Day, May 27th, citizens across the country will gather to honor the men and women who have fought for America’s freedom, from World War II to ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Susan Bahary will be paying tribute to our country’s heroes by unveiling her memorial of John Douangdara, the brave lead dog handler for the Navy SEAL Team Six and his war dog Bart, who were sadly lost in August 2011 along with 29 US soldiers, 17 of whom were Navy Seals, when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.

The John Douandara Memorial War Dog Park is part of the overall Siouxland Freedom Park project in South Sioux City honoring veterans from every era. The park, dedicated to the men and women who have served and sacrificed in the name of freedom, honors the values of those who have served so valiantly in the past, all who serve today and the young men and women who will courageously follow in their footsteps in the future.

Susan Bahary aims to raise awareness of the heroic service of military working dogs, along with their brothers and sisters in law enforcement, through her work as a sculptor. She created the first official monument to the war dog, among other stirring pieces in bronze. Her “Always Faithful” monument, honoring Kurt the Doberman, the first military working dog killed in action in the 1944 Battle of Guam, was recently placed at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Beyond the stories of soldiers who owe their lives to patrol and sentry dogs, Bahary was inspired by getting to know several canine veterans, through photos, videos, and personal encounters. “I was moved by the spirit of these courageous dogs,” she reflects, “who are the embodiment of love and devotion.”

In the spirit of this observance, Susan Bahary would like to tell your audience about:

 The story of John Douangdara, recipient of The Purple Heart, who was killed in battle on August 6, 2011 in the Wardak Province, Afghanistan alongside Bart, a military working dog and 29 fellow soldiers. The Memorial War Dog Park honors him and all Military Working Dog Handlers as well as their faithful companions, past, present, and future.

 The dogs and their tales behind her three noted sculptures: Always Faithful, created in memory of 25 noble dogs, primarily Doberman Pinschers who died in the taking of Guam during WWII, which was unveiled at the Pentagon; Faithful Partner, a tribute to California’s “K-9” force in the form of a life-size German Shepherd; and Smoky and the Dogs of All Wars, spotlighting a tiny female Yorkshire Terrier who, after being discovered in a foxhole, went on to entertain the troops and win recognition as the premier therapy dog.

 The vital work of MWDs, who are trained in controlled aggressiveness, attack, building and open area searches, and the detection of drugs and explosives, and then deployed to every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and the Department of Defense.

As a nation of dog lovers, Americans will want to honor the canines who fought and died for our country this Veterans Day. Based in Santa Barbara, California, Susan Bahary channeled her love for animals into a career as an internationally acclaimed artist. I look forward to discussing her availability for interviews.

It has been one of the greatest gifts in my life to have the honor of sculpting monuments to our K-9 and human heroes and to meet veterans and those currently serving in our military, who do so much to keep us safe and free.

Doing the work I do reminds me of what a great sacrifice the veterans have made for all of us, and how the act of even one human being or dog can so positively effect generations to come. It is through these monuments that I hope to keep the stories and history alive for future generations.
