Why did we begin producing Good News, and why have we continued for 27 years?

Imagine living with a condition that typically takes an average of 10 years to diagnose, with more than three misdiagnoses along the way.1 This is the reality for many living with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).

HS is a chronic, painful, and potentially debilitating inflammatory skin disease that is characterized by inflamed nodules that resemble boils and abscesses.2-5 These lesions typically appear in areas where the skin rubs together, like the armpits, groin area, and inner thighs.4-5 HS lesions often heal slowly and recur frequently, leading to tunnels under the skin and permanent scarring.4-5

I Don’t Want to Be a Burden in My Old Age

I am not afraid of growing old. Let the wrinkles come—I will wear them like medals, proof that I have laughed, cried, and lived deeply. Let my skin loosen and fold like pages in a well-loved book. Let my hair silver and shine, a crown earned by years of stories.

I do not fear the quiet. Solitude is no stranger; I have learned to make peace with my own company. I have sat in stillness and found strength there. I know how to rest in the silence without being swallowed by it.

But what unsettles me is something else—fate. That unpredictable force that sometimes tucks you in at night like a loving hand and other times leaves you standing in the rain, forgotten and cold.

I do not want to become a burden—a sigh of exhaustion behind closed doors. I do not want my presence to feel heavy in the room or my name to be whispered in tones of weariness. I do not want my dependence to become someone else’s silent sacrifice.

I want to be like the wind—restless, moving, always dancing forward. I want my old age to be a poem of resilience, a morning brewed with memories, a sunset painted with hope. I want to keep learning, keep loving, keep discovering—never stagnant, never finished.

I do not fear aging. I fear being boxed in by a life I didn’t choose—a life that shrinks instead of expands.

So I will keep walking forward, not clinging to what was, but embracing what still can be.

And if the day comes when my steps falter and I lean on others more than I would like, I will offer my gratitude freely, never forgetting that love is not a burden—it’s a gift.

To those who carry others with patience and tenderness—you are the quiet heroes of this world. Thank you

Anthony Yadao, MD is the US Medical Affairs Head for Immunology at Novartis. During his 16 years at Novartis, he has led multiple product launches ranging from small molecules to biologics, from primary care to specialist indications. Over the last 6 years, Tony has moved into therapeutic area leadership, with purview over the Medical Direction, Field Medical, and Health Economics & Outcomes Research. Prior to joining Novartis, Tony practiced Internal Medicine in New York City. He completed his residency through Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts and the Medical School at the University of Michigan.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS): Hidradenitis suppurativa, or HS, is a condition that causes small, painful lumps to form under the skin, often where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and breasts. The lumps heal slowly, recur, and can lead to tunnels under the skin and scarring. Once considered a rare condition, it is now thought that as many as 1 in 100 people are affected by HS.

Documentary premiere at Tribeca Film Festival about 29-year old influencer, filmmaker and advocate Jasmine IVANNA Espy. She’s also the producer of “The Beacons: Illuminating HS Stories,” a new docuseries from Novartis that highlights her story and the stories of five other people living with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a disfiguring skin disease with no cure that causes small, painful lumps to form under the skin. HS is estimated to affect as many as 1 in 100 people worldwide and black people are twice as likely to have HS.

• WHAT: Imagine living with chronic pain that feels like hot coals burning in your skin and experiencing boils in some of your most intimate areas? For the estimated 1 in 100 people living with the debilitating skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)*, it’s everyday life. “The Beacons: Illuminating HS Stories” will feature the stories of six people living with the condition, and how it impacts everything from their day to day life to relationships and beyond (you can watch the trailer here.) A complex and chronic inflammatory disease, psoriasis impacts approximately 8 million Americans and 125 million people worldwide. Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis — accounting for about 80% to 90% of cases — and is characterized by raised patches of skin with silvery-white or gray scale that can be itchy, painful and disfiguring.

For the millions of people living with psoriasis, like Gloria, the impact on their daily lives extends far beyond the physical symptoms. Among some of the many grievances Gloria can share about her last 10 years living with the condition are:

Strangers commenting on her skin when she’s out in public

Leaving bits of skin on furniture — and even needing to vacuum her bedsheets

Wearing her hair down during the unbearably hot Texas summer to avoid showing affected areas on the back of her neck

Times when people haven’t wanted to touch her skin, such as a cashier not wanting to take a $20 bill from her hands, during a flare-up

Although Gloria tried a number of treatments to help improve her psoriasis, many of these treatments didn’t give her the results she was looking for — as is often the case among psoriasis patients.

Fortunately, there’s hope. A new, innovative treatment in plaque psoriasis is getting high praise from people like Gloria, as well as the medical community. Following more than 25 years of minimal innovation in the topical psoriasis treatment space, the FDA recently approved a steroid-free, prescription cream for plaque psoriasis in adults — the first in its class in the U.S.
