This is our once a year request for a financial contribution to LOVE, HALLIE, and I hope you will consider it.

Your financial contribution will enable LOVE, HALLIE in 2025 to conduct ChangeSpace programs at Culture Lab, including the 2025 Better World Festival, to support the creation of additional Hallie’s Angels chapters (we’re excited about the one blossoming at P.S. 11 in Queens!), and to find publishing, distributing, broadcasting, creating, presenting partners to continue to share Hallie’s inspiring messages of love, empathy and action. On that last front, we are delighted that all 64 Queens Public Library branches will have Hallie’s book The Earth, illustrated by Casey Conselmo, on their shelves in 2025.

Beale: I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it.

We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be!

We all know things are bad — worse than bad — they’re crazy.

It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we’re living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, “Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials, and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.”

Well, I’m not going to leave you alone.

I want you to get mad!

I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot. I don’t want you to write to your Congressman, because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street.

All I know is that first, you’ve got to get mad.

You’ve gotta say, “I’m a human being, goddammit! My life has value!”

So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,

“I’m as mad as hell,

and I’m not going to take this anymore!!”

Prada Marfa neighbors

Greetings from The Highway!

Driving along US 90 in West Texas this year near the Prada Marfa store, I came across this on the Marfa-Van Horn section of the highway.

It is a “Tethered Radar Balloon” that I was wondering might be part of the Blue Origin Rocket Base, 100 miles or so North of there.

I did not notice this last year and being so close to the road, I would not have missed it.

It was visible for many miles and

I don’t think it was traffic control for the Parade Marfa Store,

which was about 10-15 miles down the road.

Not sure if this is similar to what “Creating News Now” (CNN) is reporting over Montana.

Lookout, that Green Comet might be “The Blob” (1958) about to strike Earth!!! 

I think we all need to watch the 1976 movie classic, “Network” and the 2020 docudrama, “The Social Dilemma” and then ask ourselves how manipulated we’ve become. Honestly, I’m not sure if truth exists anymore…at least in media.

THINGS TO DO:

1. Montauk Light House – At the END of Long Island, next stop Europe. Go for Sunrise and stay all day, bring food….. There is a great place right there but I don’t think it is open on 2/28/21. There is Hero State Park to walk around, there will be surfers out there. Hero Beach is on the right side as you get close to the Lighthouse. Tour the Lighthouse if open. Donate to it. If you take path next to restaurant it’s cool as well. There is eventually a seal overlook and money pond. So Cool! Bring Cameras, battery, Facebook Live…. Good Shoes. Wear Sunscreen….. People even Surf cast fishing out there…In fact, there are many Fishing Boats at another location Gossmans, if you want to go fishing… If your Bicycling just a little out of town, there is Ditch Plains also where people surf…

2. Atlantic Ocean – Actually you can walk to town in 20 minutes and the town is on the Ocean…jump in! You can walk to Brooklyn from there. Seriously…… Gorgeous Beach in fact after Guney’s Inn a little bit there are dunes down there… cool.

3. Bikes – They do rent bikes in Town. Next to the parking at the entrance way to the Manor there is a bike rack that you can use.

4. From the Montauk Manor – there is tennis courts, so bring a racket and balls if you want to play. Next to the courts on the right side is a path to Fort Hill Cemetery Park, one of my most special places…100 feet after the courts on your path, there is a little sign for Amys Way, take it… so gorgeous nature and I started the Nature Series on PBS many years ago, hehe, no headstones and walk to the top of the hill and you can see the Ocean, Fort Pond, Fort Pond Bay, Gardners Bay that you can hear in Billy Joel Song!

Also from the Manor just walk down the hill, pass the Montauk Playhouse (Americas First Indoor Tennis Courts, but no longer), cross the street, follow signs to Dureys Restaurant bearing right (Actually you will see the train on the left, I always take the train, but with Covid, the Jitney) probably not open yet, but you can walk on this Bay Beach, but its Rocky… but easy to get to.and a long walk will get you to Hither Hills about 10 miles of Woods…or ride your bike to Ecker Park, off Navy Road…. Get into the Hither Hills Park from there…many people MOUNTAIN BIKE THERE..

Montauk Down Gold Course – One of the best Golf Courses in the World, within the top 50 in America… they have a Driving Range which is cool. BTW Pick up a Montauk Sun Magazine, in the Montauk Manor Lobby, I have a Good News Planet Column…. The Hilltop restaurant only serves Thursday to Sunday night. There are delivery places as well, or there is a IGA Supermarket and my roof is a full kitchen. Front Desk will give you a list of open restaurants. All utensils, plates….Pools closed Are there you can put them in the dishwasher. All rooms have a TV.

Gossmans Dock – If you go down the hill make a right. Go to the end, Flamingo Road there is a little village.. Seafood, boats… about 15minutes on bike or a great walk….

Check in, 4pm Check Out 11am please go to the Front Desk, and say you are Paul Sladkus Guest Room 403. Tell them you need three keys. They have your names. You need ID, something that says where you live, if out of state, but I am not sure if that is a requirement anymore…that was a state COVID requirement.

Restaurants – there are many, I love the Harvest, cost some bucks, share big plates, great bread, make reservations.. Gurneys Inn is cool as well, pricy, actually the owner of our restaurant Hilltop, own a restaurant called TALK. Breakfast is Johns in town, classic. Next to Johns Restaurant about 200 feet is great Ice cream, Johns Drive Inn.

5. Lastly, for now, The Walking Dunes. As you leave town, Hither Hills State Park is on the Right, Ocean on the left. You take the new Montauk Highway by Bike, where the road forks for Old Montauk Highway and the new one Route 27, about 300 feet on the right, your first right, after a restaurants, right before tennis courts, make a right on that Dear End. Park Bike and walk the Dunes, which covers trees from many years ago, you can also walk around the Napeague Bay, windsurf, and gather mussels…

Why  is the sky blue?

The sky is blue due to a phenomenon called Raleigh scattering. This scattering refers to the scattering of electromagnetic radiation (of which light is a form) by particles of a much smaller wavelength. These shorter wavelengths correspond to blue hues, hence why when we look at the sky, we see it as blue.

China VC Reaches For Ceiling
More China funds are popping up as venture capital tilts away from the Silicon Valley epicenter and toward emerging Chinese tech startups.
Sinovation Ventures debuted a $500 million fourth fund while Sky9 Capital launched a $200 million third fund. Sinovation Ventures, led by AI guru and former Google China executive Kai-Fu Lee, is investing in artificial intelligence, robotics and education startups. Sky9 Capital, headed up former Lightspeed China founder Ron Cao, focuses on backing early-stage Chinese companies in the Internet, enterprise and deep tech sectors.
In the wings is a new venture fund from China Creation Ventures, a spin-out by the former team of Kleiner Perkins China and led by founding managing partner Wei Zhou. Additionally, Sequoia Capital China is raising a $550 million China venture fund, its seventh, and a $150 million seed fund for China, its first.

NEW FUNDINGS
Full Truck Alliance Group, China’s biggest app for Uber-like truck services, reportedly raised $1.9 billion in funding to fuel its expansion at a valuation of $6.5 billion with backers including SoftBank Vision Fund, China Reform Fund, GSR Ventures and Alphabet Inc.’s CapitalG. Existing investors Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Sequoia Capital also were involved in the round.

Chinese biotech startup NuProbe has bagged $11 million in a Series A round co-led by Sequoia Capital China and hedge fund Serica Partners, plus corporate strategic investor WuXi AppTec.

Silicon chipmaker Innovium raised $77 million in a Series D funding from veteran chip investor Walden International.

Want to know how competitive the cryptocurrency market is for venture capital funding? Consider that Sequoia China sued the founder of crypto trading exchange Binance for failing to honor an exclusivity agreement during negotiations, and sought an injunction against the founder, well-known as CZ, from negotiating with other investors. Sequoia had offered Binance a term sheet for a $9.5 million, Series A investment for a 12% stake in Binance. A Hong Kong court recently struck down the injunction.

IPOs
Chinese ride-hailing leader Didi Chuxing is preparing for an IPO as early as this year at a valuation of $70 billion to $80 billion, up from its most recent venture funding valuation of $57.6 billion. Didi could beat Uber to the public markets.

NOTEWORTHY
Image recognition has caught on in China in a big way. Beijing airport security checks scan your passport and face at the same time before sliding your luggage through. And parking garages are scanning license plates on cars to whisk drivers through the toll gate. No more reaching for paper tickets out the car window.

Anyone that believes that Apple will discontinue the iPhone X or that iPhone sales are down has not been to China. If anything Apple will make an X+ and make it bigger and more expensive. iPhone shipments to China were up 32% in Q1 2018, and Apple’s share of the Chinese smartphone market rose to 14.3% from 10% a year ago.

On Friday, November 17, the fantastic annual spectacle of the Leonid meteor shower will hit its peak around midnight. And 2017 will be a particularly special year to view it, since this year the shower coincides with a new moon.

For those of us who are not experts on lunar phases, this means that the lack of light shining from the moon in the sky will make everything especially dark — perfect viewing conditions for a meteor shower. (As long as you’re in an area that doesn’t have a lot of street lights or other light pollution.)

The shower this year runs from November 6 to November 30, but peaks on the night between November 17 and 18. As in, tonight.

According to Space.com, Leonids got their name from the constellation Leo, where it seems like they originate. They’re really just dust and debris left behind Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, which was last seen in our solar system in 1998.

The best way to maximize your viewing experience is to be in a very dark area on a low horizon, such as a State or National Park. And sadly, you can’t be looking at your phone during the meteor shower — the light really impedes your view. Space.com also says that people in the Northern hemisphere will get a slightly better view, though the shower can be observed from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

But if you miss the Leonids this year, don’t worry. They will literally be back on the pretty much the same days next year.

Depending on where you live, it’ll likely be a dark and cold night, so stay warm and enjoy the show.

The summer solstice occurs during a hemisphere’s summer. This is the northern solstice in the northern hemisphere and the southern solstice in the southern hemisphere. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs some time between June 20 and June 22 in the northern hemisphere[2][3] and between December 20 and December 23 each year in the southern hemisphere.[4]

When on a geographic pole, the sun reaches its greatest height, the moment of solstice, it can be noon only along that longitude which at that moment lies in the direction of the sun from the pole. For other longitudes, it is not noon. Noon has either passed or has yet to come. Hence the notion of a solstice day is useful. The term is colloquially used like midsummer to refer to the day on which solstice occurs. The summer solstice day has the longest period of daylight – except in the polar regions, where daylight is continuous, from a few days to six months around the summer solstice.

Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time with themes of religion or fertility.[5] The solstice is also known as the birthday of the sun, like the queen the sun celebrates twice a year.

Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).
