The U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is an incredible opportunity for Soldiers to represent the United States in top national and international athletic competitions—including the upcoming Summer Olympics. WCAP Soldiers come from all components of the Army, including the Army Reserve. These athletes are selected for their ability to perform at the highest level of their sports while also serving the country.

Since its inception, WCAP has helped hundreds of Soldier-athletes achieve their goals and make their Olympic dreams a reality. Soldiers receive specialized coaching and access to state-of-the-art training facilities, sports medicine, and physical therapy to help them perform at their best. Additionally, they earn the same great pay and benefits that come with being in the Army Reserve, including education and professional development support, home loan assistance, and family benefits.

Army Reserve service has a built-in support system for these elite athletes that is impossible to replicate elsewhere. Service helps strengthen Soldiers’ dedication to training, ensuring they are ready for whatever challenges come their way, whether in their career or sport. Soldier-athletes are stronger because of the larger Army team.

Join Army Reserve Captain Sarah Beard as she discusses her experience in the Army Reserve and WCAP competing in 3-Position 50m Rifle and 10m Air Rifle events. In addition to earning multiple international medals over the course of her career, Captain Beard qualified as the 2020 Olympic Team Alternate in 10m Air Rifle and can speak on the once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete for a spot in the Olympic Games.

This Friday at 11 a.m., Mayor de Blasio and the City of New York will host a ticker tape parade in honor of the U.S. Women’s Soccer team and their World Cup championship win.

You should be there!

Everyone is welcome to join in the celebrations along the Canyon of Heroes, but we’re also giving away tickets to a special ceremony at City Hall immediately after the parade.

Space is limited at the post-parade ceremony — attendees will be selected by random drawing after 4 p.m. today and alerted via email or phone starting at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Whether or not you can join the ceremony, we encourage you to wear red, white, and blue and come out to celebrate in the Canyon of Heroes (Broadway between the Battery and City Hall) and honor our World Cup Champions.

No matter what, however, you are welcome to join the celebrations along the parade route highlighted on the map below.

Teaming up with the Active Family Project, soccer legend Brandi Chastain – member of the World Cup and Olympic-winning women’s soccer teams – is encouraging families to play for a change through media appearances and social media engagement. Chastain will also offer soccer tips on the Active Family Project Activity Finder, at www.activefamilyproject.com, a go-to guide for play and resource for parents looking for some instant solutions to their playtime needs.

The Play for A Change program with USYS will last through September 30. Tips from experts at USYS about how to be playful through soccer will be highlighted on the Active Family Project Activity Finder and Facebook page. Helpful information on soccer field locations and clubs in the 10 largest U.S. cities will also be featured on the Activity Finder, making it easier for families to join leagues and participate in local games – locations in more cities will roll out this fall.
The Active Family Project, launched by Merck Consumer Care in May, helps inspire families to live life more fully by spotlighting healthy habits, providing tips and information, and sharing fun family activities, while building a national community of moms dedicated to adopting and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle, for the people they care about most.

Brandi Denise Chastain

Brandi Denise Chastain (born July 21, 1968) is a professional American soccer defender and midfielder who plays for the team California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League and is a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team.

Chastain has played for San Jose CyberRays of the WUSA and FC Gold Pride of Women’s Professional Soccer. She is best known for her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and her bra-baring celebration afterwards. Amongst her many achievements, Chastain has won two Women’s World Cup championships, two Olympic gold medals, and an Olympic silver medal.
