Every September, the Army Reserve joins the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, reflecting on our shared history as Americans and recognizing the rich mosaic of people and cultures who build and strengthen this branch of service. The Army Reserve story cannot be told without reflecting on the remarkable contributions made by Hispanic American Soldiers. From the Spanish-American War to the Korean War and beyond, Soldiers of Hispanic and Latin Descent have not hesitated to defend this nation and contribute their talents and skills to local communities.

Whether their heritage can be traced to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean or Central and South America, these Soldiers have answered the call to service, defending America with great honor, dedication, and distinction. The Army Reserve draws its strength from the diversity that makes up America’s melting pot, and by recognizing our history, we are building a future of a stronger Army Reserve that allows all Soldiers the opportunity to be all they can be.

One of the many benefits of Army Reserve service, is having the flexibility to pursue a Civilian career while also being part of something bigger than yourself. Soldiers can advance their careers and skillsets through various trainings and educational offerings. For example, Sergeant First Class Rodney Roldan, a Noncommissioned Officer, joined the Army Reserve to enhance his media and acting skills through the Army’s public affairs program. And when he’s not reporting in the field, recording radio shows, or working with special operations, Sgt. 1st Class Roldan is on the big screen, working in television and film.

On Wednesday, September 4, join Sergeant First Class Rodney Roldan in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the Army Reserve. He will discuss the rich story of Hispanic Soldiers in the Army Reserve, his Puerto Rican heritage, and while also highlighting his Army career, his dedication to helping Soldiers reach their potential, and his passion for acting and documentary filmmaking.

TODAY’S ARMY RESERVE IS MORE DIVERSE THAN EVER, AND IT RECOGNIZES THE UNIQUE STRENGTHS THAT EACH SOLDIER BRINGS TO THE TABLE.

DURING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, THE ARMY RESERVE IS PAYING TRIBUTE TO SOLDIERS OF HISPANIC AND LATIN DESCENT AND THE MANY WAYS THEY SUPPORT AND ENHANCE THE FORCE.

HERE NOW TO TALK ABOUT THE RICH HISTORY OF HISPANIC SOLDIERS AND THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS THEY’VE MADE TO THE ARMY RESERVE, INCLUDING HIS OWN PASSION FOR FILM, IS SERGEANT FIRST CLASS RODNEY ROLDAN.

SFC Rodney Manuel Roldan

AGR Operations NCO, 300TH Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

Since 1918, the U.S. Warrant Officer has stood alongside our most successful military leaders as trusted advisors and mentors. As keepers of the Army’s technical systems, the Warrant Officer role has evolved from humble beginnings as mine planters in the Army Coast Artillery Corps of World War I to serving in more than 40 unique occupation specialties. These include ground forces, aviation, intelligence, engineering, and more. This July, the Warrant Officer cohort is celebrating its 106th anniversary.

Of all the positions of authority and responsibility, that of Command Chief Warrant Officer is probably the least known. However, this is a critical position within all branches of the military —especially within the Army Reserve — because the Warrant Officer is a steady presence with expert knowledge that helps the total Army achieve its mission. Warrant Officers are innovative integrators of emerging technologies, dynamic teachers, confident warfighters, and developers of specialized teams of Soldiers.

Although they make up less than three percent of total Army strength, Warrant Officers are responsible for training Soldiers, organizing and advising on missions, and advancing within their career specialties. The Warrant Officer cohort is comprised of more than 26,000 men and women of the active Army and Reserve components.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 LaShon White, Command Chief Warrant Officer of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, as he discusses the invaluable role Warrant Officers fulfill. CW5 White first enlisted in the Army in 1986 and this year became the first Black Command Chief Warrant Officer of the Army Reserve.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITIONS IN THE U-S ARMY RESERVE MAY POSSIBLY BE ONE THAT MANY CIVILIANS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF.

SINCE 1918, WARRANT OFFICERS HAVE SERVED AS TRUSTED ADVISERS AND MENTORS WHO HELP SOLVE THE ARMY’S MOST COMPLEX CHALLENGES.

HERE NOW TO EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ROLE, IS CHIEF-WARRANT-OFFICER-5, LASHON (LA-SHAWN) WHITE, COMMAND CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER OF THE U-S ARMY RESERVE COMMAND.

The U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is an incredible opportunity for Soldiers to represent the United States in top national and international athletic competitions—including the upcoming Summer Olympics. WCAP Soldiers come from all components of the Army, including the Army Reserve. These athletes are selected for their ability to perform at the highest level of their sports while also serving the country.

US Army Reserve website: https://www.usar.army.mil/

Since its inception, WCAP has helped hundreds of Soldier-athletes achieve their goals and make their Olympic dreams a reality. Soldiers receive specialized coaching and access to state-of-the-art training facilities, sports medicine, and physical therapy to help them perform at their best. Additionally, they earn the same great pay and benefits that come with being in the Army Reserve, including education and professional development support, home loan assistance, and family benefits.

Army Reserve service has a built-in support system for these elite athletes that is impossible to replicate elsewhere. Service helps strengthen Soldiers’ dedication to training, ensuring they are ready for whatever challenges come their way, whether in their career or sport. Soldier-athletes are stronger because of the larger Army team.

Soldier-athletes are among the best in their sport, with a growing medal count (100+) to prove it. Some of the WCAP Sports include:

· Boxing

· Cycling

· Track & Field

· Soccer

· Shooting

· Swimming & many others

Join Army Reserve Captain Sarah Beard as she discusses her experience in the Army Reserve and WCAP competing in 3-Position 50m Rifle and 10m Air Rifle events. In addition to earning multiple international medals over the course of her career, Captain Beard qualified as the 2020 Olympic Team Alternate in 10m Air Rifle and can speak on the once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete for a spot in the Olympic Games.

usar.army.mil
Every October, the Army observes Energy Action Month to raise awareness of the critical role that energy resilience plays in our everyday lives. Whether you’re a Soldier in the Army Reserve, parent, student or community member—we can all work together to affect change in our communities. The small changes we implement at work and at home can add up to significant energy savings.

This year, the Army Reserve’s theme is “Readiness Through Resilience,” highlighting the integral link between mission capabilities and energy availability. From the electricity that powers facilities, to the fuel that powers vehicles, energy touches nearly every aspect of the force. This is why the Army Reserve is investing in resilience technologies, such as microgrids and energy storage, and hybrid tactical vehicles. Access to uninterrupted energy is a core enabler of national defense.

Threats to energy are on the rise as we continue to experience more frequent and damaging climate hazards and extreme weather events. But we can all make small changes to reduce energy and water consumption to help protect America’s energy future.

Personal resilience is just as important as Army resilience. Some simple ways all Americans can conserve energy include:

Choose ENERGY STAR® certified models when you purchase electronics and appliances, choose.
Take advantage of all technology has to offer: LED light bulbs, smart meters, energy efficient appliances and electronics, etc.
Change your heating and air conditioning system’s filters regularly.
This fall, weatherize your home to eliminate air leaks and add insulation to make your home more energy efficient and comfortable.

Join Colonel Martin Naranjo, Director, Army Reserve Installation Management, Directorate, Office of the Chief Army Reserve to learn more about the energy conservation efforts of the Army Reserve. He’ll also discuss how we can all implement changes to conserve energy and save money and resources.

As the new year gets underway, Americans are setting new health and fitness goals for themselves and their families. To help stick to these goals throughout the year, everyone may want to take lessons from the best. The Army Reserve is taking health and fitness to a new level – combining a new challenge called the Double Eagle Fitness Challenge along with their Holistic Health and Fitness System (H2F).

www.usar.army.mil

The H2F System is an Army-wide program used to improve and prepare Soldiers for the increasingly challenging environments and adversaries they face in this modern era. It includes five disciplines of physical and non-physical readiness such as:

 Physical: building strength, speed, endurance
 Sleep: supporting behaviors that provide optimal brain function
 Nutrition: recognizing optimum food/drink to meet physical and non-physical demands
 Mental: adapting successfully through adverse situations
 Spiritual: creating practices to build resilience in times of stress & hardship
The Double Eagle Fitness Challenge is a 12-week Army Reserve program that includes:
 Cardiovascular exercises
 Strength/resistant training
 High intensity interval training (HIIT)

The new system is designed to bring a cultural change to Soldiers’ perceptions of training for the demands of close combat while building agile, adaptable, and fit troops. Army Reserve Soldiers in various locations, with varying schedules, use the program’s templates as guideposts for their progression of Soldier Readiness.

The program also provides education, coaching, mentoring, messaging, and outreach to improve, restore and maintain the readiness, resilience, and performance of the Total Army.
Learning more about this top-notch health and fitness program can also equip average Americans with the skills to be their best in the new year.

Join Sergeant Major Robert M. Setter, who developed the Double Eagle Fitness Challenge. He’ll discuss the importance of fitness training for Soldiers and how everyday Americans can gain an advantage in their own health and fitness programs by learning about the Army Reserve approach.
What can you tell us about the Army Reserve’s new health and fitness system and why it’s being introduced now?
Can you provide details about the H2F system?
How can Americans learn from these programs to improve their health and fitness?
What are the main goals the U.S. Army Reserve hopes to achieve with the H-2-F system and where can everyone learn more about it?

This summer U.S. Army Reserve 1st Lt. Amber English claimed an Olympic gold medal for skeet shooting in Tokyo.
The first-time Olympian set a new Olympic skeet shooting record with 56 hits defeating Diana Bacosi of Italy, the 2016 Olympic champion.
English exercised resilience to overcome the adversities she encountered during her journey to the 2020 Olympics. In 2016, she lost her father, and in 2012 and 2016 she did not make the U.S. Olympic Team. Winning the gold this year was about more than sheer skill – it was a testament to perseverance and what one can achieve when she doesn’t give up on her goals.
Now that her medal-winning performance is behind her, 1st Lt. English is stateside again, settling back into her pre-Olympics role as a Logistics Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Join 1st Lt. English to learn about her Olympic journey and the unique, double honor of representing Team USA and the U.S. Army Reserve on the world stage. Find out why she chose service in the U.S. Army Reserve, and what it taught her about perseverance, team work and achieving
Paws of War seeks support to help bring Tyson back to America from the Middle East

NESCONSET, New York – (April 20, 2021) – U.S. soldiers stationed in the Middle East will be making their way back to America. In doing so, some may be forced with the decision to leave behind their rescued pet, or find a way to get help getting it to safety in the States. For Army Sergeant Vont, the thought of leaving his rescued puppy Tyson behind is unacceptable, leaving him desperate for a way to help save his furry family member.

“This is a great story of how a dog has helped a whole base of people. There’s just no way he can be left behind when they all come home,” explains Dereck Cartright, a disabled veteran who is the stateside logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “We will do everything we can to help bring Tyson home to live out his life, but we need the help of the public to make it happen.”

When Sgt. Vont came across a puppy along the side of the road that was emaciated and abandoned, he knew he had to take action. He brought the puppy back to safety, named him Tyson, and then watched the way his health improved, and how happy he made everyone around him.

Tyson’s days were spent playing with all the soldiers, who would look forward to their time with him. As they would come and go, they would share stories of their time spent with the growing pup. He uplifted the spirits of everyone that played with him or watched him run around, but his favorite person was Sgt. Vont. When he was around, he always followed him wherever he went. The feelings and admiration were mutual, and the bonds continued to grow.

Now that some soldiers are heading home from the Middle East, Vont has turned to Paws of War to try to get assistance in bringing Tyson back home to the U.S. Once successful, this will give him a chance to live out his life with Sgt. Vont and his family. The alternative would be to leave him behind in the Middle East, which would end up being a death sentence in such a place because the terrain is harsh and the country doesn’t have the love for dogs that Americans do.

“Tyson has become family to me, and I can’t bear the thought of leaving him behind in where I know he will suffer,” explains Sgt. Vont. “I appreciate any and all effort and support to help make it possible to bring him home with me. It will be a dream come true, really.”

Paws of War has a great reputation of helping soldiers bring their pets back from overseas. It’s a mission that is costly and takes jumping through numerous hoops, but Paws of War has done it enough times that it is able to navigate the procedure and successfully relocate the pet. The organization has a strong network of support that helps it to navigate through the challenges and logistics of relocating a pet overseas, and to pay for the care, paperwork, and flight that is involved in the mission.

Paws of War runs several core programs serving veterans and first responders. The War Tor Pups program helps soldiers who have rescued a dog or cat overseas, bring them to safety where they are companion animals for the soldier. Paws of War also provides service dog training, free veterinary care, a companion animal adoption program for veterans and first responders, and an outreach program for homebound disabled veterans. As Veterans Day is Observed on November 11th
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT LEADERSHIP & GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES IN THE U.S. ARMY RESERVE
Veterans Day is a day to set aside to honor all American veterans for their dedicated and loyal service to their country and to appreciate the sacrifices they made to keep our country free.
For generations, sons and daughters have followed in their relative’s footsteps, (whether it’s a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle) by wearing the nation’s uniform and serving in the U.S. military.
But what does it mean to be a Soldier for life? Whether you serve for one enlistment term or a twenty year career, we honor and thank each person for their role in serving the country. For each person who serves, they can recognize their contributions to our country. And that takes shape in a variety of ways. In the Army Reserve, for example, there are many opportunities for men and women to participate in military service across areas such as transportation, public affairs, military intelligence and more. One critical role is the Warrant Officer.
The Warrant Officers have technical expertise that enables the commander’s vision. Although they make up less than three percent of total Army strength, Warrant Officers are responsible for training Soldiers, organizing and advising on missions, and advancing within their career specialties. This is a critical position within all branches of the military—and especially within the Army Reserve—because the Warrant Officer is a steady presence with expert knowledge that helps the Army achieve its mission.
Army Reserve Command Chief Warrant Officer, Hal Griffin, as he discusses the importance of Veterans Day and the opportunities to serve as a Soldier for life in the Army Reserve.
