In light of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the healthcare industry recognizes the innovative medical strides made in lung cancer research. Importantly, this month is also a time to reflect on the 13 percent of lung cancer cases that are small cell, a disease that occurs in approximately 30,000 to 35,000 patients each year in the U.S.1 .A small cell lung cancer (SCLC) diagnosis can cause experiences of stigma, fear and hopelessness for many due to its devastating nature.
SCLC can have a profound emotional and physical impact on the lives of those it touches, and many people are hesitant to “dig deep” into online research out of worry they may affirm their worst fears when it comes to survivability.
Nearly 50% of cancer patients, including those impacted by SCLC, spend less than 10 minutes speaking with their healthcare provider when first diagnosed.2 Each and every healthcare hero – physicians, nurses, advocates, scientists and researchers alike – has a role to play in delivering more personalized attention across the continuum of SCLC care.
Montessa, a 14-year SCLC survivor and advocate, is joined with Abizer Gaslightwala, head of U.S. hematology and oncology at Jazz Pharmaceuticals to speak with the public about SCLC.

Why it’s so critical for the healthcare industry to dedicate energy to SCLC

Advice for those who are beginning their journey with SCLC

Support services that can improve psychosocial health and well-being

Montessa and Abizer will also share details about a new online program called Nothing Small About It, the first-ever digital hub dedicated solely to SCLC patients and their caregivers that aims to provide empathy, education and inspiration through a collection of intimate testimonials from people living with the disease and those who help provide support to them.

It was developed to meet people exactly where they’re at in their individual care journeys, and it is focused exclusively on the psychosocial and educational needs of all people living with this rare form of cancer.

Breaking Down the Barriers to Receive Care ***ESPECIALLY FOR SOLDIERS IN THE ARMY RESERVE***

Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Part of that reality may also include living with the stigma and negative attitudes associated with mental health care, which can pose a significant barrier for individuals to seek help.

The issues surrounding mental health also impact Soldiers serving in the Army Reserve. These men and women face the stressors that come with holding down a civilian job along with the responsibilities of school, family, and being a U.S. Army Reserve Soldier.

In order to help combat the problems surrounding mental illness, confiding in others can be a great comfort and help for those suffering from psychological health issues.

Helping address these issues with Soldiers is not only important to them, their careers and their families, but also to the nation and the Americans that they serve.

However, often those in the military may choose to try and handle these types of problems on their own. That’s where the Army Reserve Psychological Health Program can serve a crucial role.

The trained psychological health professionals who are part of this program are passionate about delivering world-class behavioral health services. They offer clinical assessment and referrals for mental health issues to achieve and sustain the most resilient and mentally fit force in the nation.

Colonel Melissa L. Mitravich, FHP-BC, MSN, MSS, AN, Director of Psychological Health Program, United States Army Reserve Command, Surgeon Directorate. She discusses how to break down the barriers and stigma associated with receiving mental health care, as well as how we can help assist Soldiers and their families.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING TESTED FOR HEPATITIS C
***CDC now recommends universal hepatitis C screening for all U.S. adults***

MAY IS HEPATITIS AWARENESS MONTH AND TODAY WE ARE SPEAKING WITH HEP C SURVIVOR AND ADVOCATE FOR THE COMMUNITY, KAREN. IN 2010 KAREN LEARNED THAT HER LIVER WAS FAILING, AND SHE WAS LATER DIAGNOSED WITH THE HEPATITIS C VIRUS.

FORTUNATELY, SHE MADE A FULL RECOVERY, AND TODAY SHE’S ALL ABOUT HELPING OTHERS. KAREN JOINS US NOW TO DISCUSS WHAT IS HEP C, WHY SCREENING IS SO IMPORTANT AND WHY EVERYONE DESERVES TO AND CAN BE FREE OF HEP C.

KAREN BIO: No last time due to patient confidentiality rules

Karen offers a no nonsense approach to living with hepatitis C. A Hepatitis C survivor, Karen created a liver loving diet and lifestyle that allows her to create awareness and advocate for the hep C community. After receiving successful treatment for hep C in 2012, Karen began a website, ihelpc.com, to encourage and inform other patients by talking about her experience living with liver disease. Karen has also authored The Liver Loving Diet to provide health and nutritional tips for those with liver disease.

Hepatitis C, or hep C, is a viral infection that can cause chronic inflammation and scarring in the liver, leading to long-term health problems. Chronic hep C is also the most common reason for liver transplants in the United States.[i] But that’s not the only reason the virus is considered a major public health problem. Among 2.3 million people living in the US with hep C, 40% don’t even know they have it. [ii],[iii]
Many people who are infected with chronic hep C don’t experience symptoms or have non-specific symptoms, like chronic fatigue. They can be asymptomatic for several decades. And someone infected with the virus can spread it whether they have symptoms or not. 1
Karen, a hep C survivor and advocate for the community, didn’t feel any symptoms of her hep C until after a bike ride, when her feet became numb and her body was swollen. The following day she was admitted to the hospital with liver failure and ultimately was diagnosed with hep C. Karen eventually felt empowered by the knowledge of her diagnosis and decided to take the step to treat her hep C.

There are many factors which could lead a patient to refrain from getting tested for hep C. These may include stigma, not experiencing symptoms, lack of access to treatment or fear of side effects.[iv],[v] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends one-time testing for all adults over 18 years of age, pregnant women during each pregnancy and those younger than 18 if at risk. 1

Since May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to discuss the importance of getting tested for the infection and find out more about its symptoms.
