Most Bible stories aimed at children are for reading TO children; not ones that kids can read to themselves. But now a new book, uses Bible stories FOR kids to read themselves.

Not only does it promote early reading literacy among young children but offers some great life lessons.

“Bible Stories for Beginning Readers,” leads little ones through stories in a way they can understand. It’s a book kids can call their own and read independently with minimal instruction.

Literacy plays a crucial role in shaping physical and mental health so at an early age can help a child’s overall development that extends beyond the realm of elementary education lessons. It’s been noted that having children read at an early age even helps to achieve higher educational outcomes and sets them up for success in adulthood.

The book’s author – Janice Burnette is a former reading specialist who has taught beginning and struggling readers throughout her career.

For the estimated 1 in 100 people living with the debilitating skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)*, it’s everyday life. “The Beacons: Illuminating HS Stories” will feature the stories of six people living with the condition, and how it impacts everything from their day to day life to relationships and beyond (you can watch the trailer here.) It is co-produced by advocate, journalist, and filmmaker Jasmine IVANNA Espy. The event will include a screening of the 30-minute film, followed by a panel discussion.
o About Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS): Hidradenitis suppurativa, or HS, is a condition that causes small, painful lumps to form under the skin, often where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and breasts. The lumps heal slowly, recur, and can lead to tunnels under the skin and scarring. Once considered a rare condition, it is now thought that as many as 1 in 100 people are affected by HS.
o Those living with the condition struggle with more than their ability to feel confident, and it affects things like the ability to put clothes on, sit down, participate in their favorite hobbies, and pursue partnership and intimacy.

Designed to empower people with multiple myeloma (MM), MM Told True highlights the stories of those with the disease, bringing them to the forefront through spoken or visual art. In her thought-provoking poem, Jae tells the story of Oya – a committed father, podcaster, aspiring musician and advocate for health equity in the Black community – who was diagnosed with MM in 2017, despite difficulty having his concerns taken seriously.

Since his diagnosis, Oya has become an outspoken member of the MM community, with the hope that others will reach a quicker diagnosis and feel supported through treatment.

MM is a currently incurable cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow with over 34,000 new cases estimated to be diagnosed in 2023. Even with treatment, the disease tends to relapse – meaning symptoms come back after temporarily improving – or progress.

Patients report feeling like they’re inside a maze, as promising treatment paths repeatedly hit a wall. MM disproportionately impacts ethnic and racial minority groups in incidence, onset and outcome, with Black patients twice as likely to die from the disease compared with white patients.

MM Told True not only illustrates patient stories, but also provides tools and information about MM – so people living with the disease can feel educated and empowered against this relentless blood cancer.

The next phase of the campaign involves encouraging others affected by MM to share their unique stories on MMToldTrue.com, whether it comes in the form of a personal photo, a powerful message or something else that expresses how they feel. These lived experiences can serve as inspiration for people with MM and their care partners.

On March 2, Oya and Jae will be available to discuss how they came together to create meaningful art from Oya’s story, his experience living with MM, and how others can share their own stories and find support through the MM Told True website.

After the worst shooting at a Jewish sanctuary in America’s history took place in Pittsburgh three years ago, one man set out to write a book to highlight the good that others do to help uplift a community.
