Realscreen is honoring the late Dr. Jane Goodall during the Realscreen Awards ceremony set for February 3, during the 2026 Realscreen Summit.

The world-renowned ethologist, conservationist, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace is being celebrated with the Realscreen Action Award, which recognizes individuals whose work within the unscripted and non-fiction content sector has inspired meaningful social impact and driven positive change in the industry and beyond. Last year’s recipient of the Action Award was acclaimed filmmaker Dawn Porter.

Dr. Goodall’s work in the field as a pre-eminent scientist and animal behavior expert, and as a global voice for community-centered conservation and biodiversity protection, has been the focal point of scores of documentary films and series, dating back to 1965’s Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees, narrated by Orson Welles for National Geographic, to Brett Morgen’s riveting 2017 documentary Jane, also for Nat Geo. Through Jane Goodall Productions, she and her team have been in production and development on many upcoming projects, including Matriarch, a collaboration with BBC Studios, PBS and the WNET Group. Her passing in October of this year led to an outpouring of love from around the world, spanning world leaders, noted celebrities and inspired citizens — all of whom have been touched by her legacy.

Cities around the world face a daunting challenge in the era of climate change: Supercharged rainstorms are turning streets into rivers, flooding subway systems and inundating residential neighborhoods, often with deadly consequences.

Kongjian Yu, a landscape architect and professor at Peking University, is developing what might seem like a counterintuitive response: Let the water in.

“You cannot fight water,” he said. “You have to adapt to it.”

Instead of putting in more drainage pipes, building flood walls and channeling rivers between concrete embankments, which is the usual approach to managing water, Mr. Yu wants to dissipate the destructive force of floodwaters by slowing them and giving them room to spread out.

Mr. Yu calls the concept “sponge city” and says it’s like “doing tai chi with water,” a reference to the Chinese martial art in which an opponent’s energy and moves are redirected, not resisted.

“It’s a whole philosophy, a new way of dealing with water,” he said.

Through his Beijing-based company, Turenscape, one of the world’s largest landscape architecture firms, Mr. Yu has overseen the development of hundreds of landscaped urban water parks in China where runoff from flash floods is diverted to soak into the ground or be absorbed into constructed wetlands.

Mr. Yu said growing up in a village in Zhejiang Province toward the end of the Cultural Revolution showed him how earlier generations in rural China had “made friends with water.” Farmers in his region built terraces, berms and ponds to direct and to store excess water during the rainy season.

That stood in sharp contrast to the urban landscapes in modern China. Traditionally, cities in China would set aside areas capable of absorbing floodwaters. But such nature-friendly urban design largely ended with the Industrial Revolution, Mr. Yu said. More recently, millions of acres have been paved over to build cities, some of them rising up virtually overnight.

“We’ve been using the conventional drainage infrastructure for 200 years and we haven’t solved the flooding problem,” he said, noting that much of China has a monsoon climate subject to extremely heavy bursts of rain that pose an increasing hazard as climate change advances. That’s because warm air can hold more moisture, resulting in heavier rainstorms.

Currently, 65 percent of urban areas in China experience some degree of flooding each year, according to Mr. Yu. The country is currently the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases. The United States is the largest historical emitter .

“The concrete drainage systems that came here from the West just can’t handle it,” Mr. Yu said. “We need a new solution.”

The sponge city program was formally inaugurated by President Xi Jinping in 2015 with pilot projects in 16 Chinese cities and has since expanded to more than 640 sites in 250 municipalities around the country.

You can see the concept in Houtan Park, a mile-long strip of greenery along the Huangpu River in Shanghai that Mr. Yu designed on a former industrial site.

Terraces planted with bamboo and native forbs and grasses are bisected by wooden walkways that zigzag between ponds and constructed wetlands. The wetlands filter water, slow the river’s flow and provide habitat for waterfowl and spawning fish.

Born and raised in Grenada, MS, Dr. Crowder attended Millsaps College where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology. He attended medical school at the University of Mississippi, pursuing training in internal medicine and cardiology. Finally, Dr. Crowder underwent a year of additional training in advanced interventional cardiology techniques at the Medical University of South Carolina. There he trained with national leaders in the interventional cardiology community with an emphasis on atrial septal defect/patent foramen ovale repair as well as techniques for treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

He is active in multi-center research trials, staying at the forefront of medical technology.

Dr. Crowder is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology. His memberships include the Mississippi State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Cardiology. He is a fellow of the College of Cardiology. He has been active in the medical community and is a past member of the board of trustees of the state medical association.

He attends St. Richard’s Church with his wife, Kimberly. When he is not working, he enjoys reading and playing music. He is an accomplished pianist and works with his father on various record projects.

Now, you don’t have to travel that far. In fact, while you’re in New York City you can catch up with the best in Chinese culture, along with classic Western. It happens annually at an event known as the Chinese New Year Spectacular.

This is the Year of the Rat, and to ring in the New Year, the sixth annual Spectacular will be unveiled next Friday, Feb. 7, at…are you ready?….Carnegie Hall. Yes, the repository of the best of music. The New Year show will be starting at 7:30 P.M. with a combination of classic Chinese drama, good old-fashioned ballet, a Beethoven selection, opera, and lively American music.

It has come about under the aegis of Harvard Wealth Strategy & Management, LLC, along with Premier Event Management Inc., whose president, Charles Sullivan, has been on a mission to have the two cultures get to know each other better.

One of his favorite descriptions of things he likes is “grand and glorious,” and perhaps he also has this show in mind.

His co-producer is the internationally renowned Lili Li. Sullivan describes her importance in the project as similar to what “Bill Belichick has played in the success of the Patriots.” She has organized the talent in America and China, and has been instrumental in bringing together influential people from both countries.

I wondered what the “Konqu” performers were, and what the drama they were creating in front of me meant.

You feel you are looking at an ancient Chinese print. The two principals in this show spend more than two hours putting on makeup and elaborate costumes. The name “Konqu,” or “Konju” comes from the area of Kunshan, perhaps as early as the 17th Century. And there, in front of you, a world appears in which these two stylized figures recite poetry, sing, and dance. You are transported to another world.

And then there are the more familiar acts: An intriguing violinist named Deni Bonet, along with a guitarist and pianist, struts around the stage in lively renditions of her own and others’ songs. You might have seen her on Saturday Night Live, or perhaps with Cyndi Lauper or at many other major venues.

Unlike most violinists, she is not nailed to the floor. And she doesn’t shy away from going head-to-head with the guitar player, having fun and breaking an erstwhile-stodgy image of the grand old instrument.

On a classical note, Quan Chen, an operatic soprano, takes over the stage with her presence and her voice. She holds a pair of master’s degrees—one earned not far from Carnegie Hall, at the Manhattan School of Music.

She loves bringing the Western canon to China, and says that, while the audiences there may not be familiar with the music, it tends to bring East and West together.

That is an event echoed by the the spectacular classical pianist Cong Bi, who earned the Steinway Award in 2019. He speaks of his love for Beethoven, and it shows in his nimble performance.

Peter Bray is currently Director of Digital at Saatchi & Saatchi NY. Currently, he is also an Executive Academy Member of the IADAS. In 2001, Peter founded the multi award winning agency Clear Blue Day, with offices in NYC, Melbourne and Sydney. Clear Blue Day was founded around expert digital strategy and branding, with clients including Subaru, Macquarie Bank and Diageo. In 2007 this was sold to ASX listed entity Q Limited. In mid 2009, he joined The Brand Shop initially as Director of Digital to ensure that the agency created a digital strategy offering. A little over 4 months later, Peter was given the additional role of leading the agency with a talented ECD to a successful 2010, reporting directly to the CEO of the WPP owned STW Group (ASX: STW), a group that owns over 70 different agencies including JWT and Ogilvy, and soon after had a role at STW Group “central” working across all agencies.

Harry Kargman is the Founder and CEO of Kargo, the leading mobilepublisher platform. Founded in 2003, Kargo delivers advertising and integrated rich media across its proprietary platform of major media mobile websites, apps and tablet experiences.
