I had an interesting conversation today with a senior corporate executive. As we wrapped up, she said something that made me realize we really need to clarify that the Institute for Sustainable Development is trying to break through with new concepts that the current frame of talking about community shocks and stresses doesn’t take into account:

   “It’s a shame you focus so much on disasters.”

At ISD, we actually don’t.

Our mission is grounded in the opposite idea: communities shouldn’t have to endure a disaster to get the resources, attention, or leadership they need to become stronger.

What we focus on is community continuity—reducing the harm from future disruptions and strengthening resilience every single day.

Businesses already understand this. They don’t build “Business Emergency Plans.”They build Business Continuity Plans because interruptions cost money, customers, and competitiveness. Continuity is practical. It’s strategic. It’s how organizations stay viable.

Communities deserve the same logic.

During the Seder—while we talk of freedom throughout—the food we eat is the salt water of tears, the charoset of cement, and the maror of the bitterness of slavery.
Even in our moments of happiness, we also remember pain and loss and the challenges we endured to get us to where we are. The Seder is designed this way to make us think about the responsibility of what being free really means.
True joy comes from fully inhabiting our experiences, no matter how tough.
Reflecting on our challenges , no matter how hard, enhances our gratitude for present blessings. we don’t diminish our happiness when we spend a day or a few weeks meditating on the challenges we went through in order to emerge even stronger . We become more grateful, holding on tightly to our blessed lives because we can.
May this holiday season bring the understanding and appreciation that all  the challenges of life is a stepping stone for true Joy! And may you and your family only have true joy this holiday season and through out the year!

The Army Reserve story cannot be told without reflecting on the remarkable impact made by Hispanic Soldiers. Hispanic Americans have a proud legacy of military service dating back to the Civil War. Whether their heritage can be traced to Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, or one of dozens of other Spanish-speaking countries or cultures, they’ve answered the “call to duty,” defending America with unwavering valor and honor. The theme for the 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” underscores the Army’s celebration of diversity and commitment to building high performing and cohesive teams.

Today, more than 17% of America’s Soldiers are of Hispanic or Latino descent, making this the fastest growing segment of the Army. Thousands of Hispanic American Soldiers fulfill vital roles supporting Army Reserve operations around the world, continuing a legacy of professionalism, selfless service and courage that will inspire generations to come.

Battalion Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Anthony Taylor as he discusses notable achievements of Hispanic Americans in the Army Reserve. He will also talk about his Peruvian heritage, his family’s proud history of service and his dedication to helping Soldiers reach their potential.

During National Women’s History Month in March, the Army Reserve joins the nation to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of women.

Women’s History Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army Reserve has as a diverse all-volunteer force.

Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Raquel A. DiDomenico will share how she became the first female First Sergeant of a Combat Engineer Company in 2015, before combat-designated units were opened to women. DiDomenico will also highlight the achievements of other women in the military.

Of the many accomplished women within the Army Reserve, perhaps the most noteworthy example to date is Lieutenant General (LTG) Jody J. Daniels the Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command, the first woman to lead the Army Reserve and the first female commander of any Army component. In this role, LTG Daniels is paving the way for the next generation of female Army Reserve leaders.

Army Reserve diversity is about understanding the value individuals bring and optimizing what they offer to build high-performing and cohesive teams. The Army Reserve is stronger because of this diversity.

The Army story isn’t complete without the historic achievements of women Soldiers and Civilians, who have played a major role in defense of our Nation since the Revolutionary War. Women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Army.

To continue this story, the Army Reserve provides leadership opportunities to all Soldiers to enable them to thrive in their careers and build successful lives:
• Since 2016, the Army has trained more than 3,200 women Soldiers into Infantry, Armor and Field Artillery Occupations
• 36% of the Department of the Army Civilian Workforce are Women
• 95 Women Have Graduated Ranger School since 2015

About the Author

Mark was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He received his BS degree in Finance from Boston College and an MBA in Marketing from Tulane University. He worked for IBM for 13 years, before forming a New Orleans-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) and also starting and supporting several other successful business ventures and consulting groups.

Mark served for 10 years as President of the Louisiana Technology Council (LTC), assisting with the technology development of Louisiana. In November of 2005, Mark was selected by the Governor’s office as Technology Leader of the Year for the State of Louisiana. Through his leadership, Louisiana became one of the top three states in the country in technology job and wage growth. Mark left the LTC in 2012 and is currently the President of Communique LLC, an entrepreneurial business coaching firm based in New Orleans. Mark helps coach CEOs to become wildly successful, moderates 5 CEO Round tables in Louisiana, is the volunteer membership director for EO of Louisiana, is the Project Coordinator for Louisiana’s Annual IT Symposium, and owns a fiberglass manufacturing company.

Mark’s passion is to help make the world a better place to live in. Based on his life, coaching, and entrepreneurial experiences he wrote the books Give a Damn for 4 reasons:
