Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. The 2020-21 school year of laptop learning and at-home schooling brought major changes and challenges for parents and their children, especially children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). So, what happens after the kids power off, say goodbye to virtual school, and take a summer break?

In the past, parents often considered giving their children with ADHD a “medication vacation” during holidays or time off from school, reasoning that without schoolwork to focus on, medication was not necessary. Especially for children whose ADHD was managed with stimulant medication, time off from school presented an opportunity to take a break from the use of a controlled substance, and limit the associated side effects.

This year, the uncharted territory and uncertainty of what comes next can be stressful. And for children with ADHD, this unfamiliar ground can add to the challenges they typically face. Maintaining treatment may help children to enjoy summer activities, while also preventing the complications that may be associated with stopping and restarting treatment in preparation for the back-to-school transition.

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood, typically diagnosed in early childhood, on average, at the age of 7. These children may struggle with controlling impulsive behaviors, have difficulty paying attention, and may be overly active.

Dr. Theresa R. Cerulli is a neuropsychiatrist who specializes in ADHD and has spent the last 20 years on the frontlines with families struggling with the disorder. In addition to her private practice and position on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Dr. Cerulli is mom to a daughter with ADHD. She can share her professional and personal experience on how to help children begin the transition to in-person activities, prepare for full-day classes in the fall, and answer questions about ADHD treatments, including one recently approved by the FDA.

Ways to Reduce Stress in the Classroom.
The Oxford Method, a tutoring community, spotlights student stress and ways to help reduce it. NEW YORK, NEW YORK – (April 26, 2021) – Parents and teachers know they are stressed, but they may not realize just how stressed students are, too. According to a report issued by the American Psychological Association, the stress teens feel rivals that of adults. What’s more is that teens surveyed report that their stress level is higher during the school year, many to the point of feeling overwhelmed. The good news is that there are things that can be done to help reduce stress in the classroom, which will lead to less stress in the lives of students.

“None of us like stress, but it’s all around, even for students who should be focusing on their studies,” explains David Florence, professor and founder of The Oxford Method, a community that offers tutoring services around the country. “However, students can finish strong, and feel prepared for the next school year. We are helping students to do that daily.”
With school being a source of stress for many students, it’s helpful to take measures to reduce it in the classroom.

Here are some ways to reduce stress in the classroom:
• Help teach students to be prepared and up to speed academically. Doing this will include making sure they have the information they need so they feel well prepared, ensuring that they understand the materials, and getting them assistance when and if it’s needed. For example, some students may benefit from additional tutoring, which will help them with better understanding the material and being prepared.
• Find ways to create a relaxing learning environment. This can be done by choosing to have a positive attitude, teaching students about mindfulness and breathing exercises, and having a calm corner.
• Let students know that they can approach the teacher and other adults at the school if they have issues or questions, or need help. If they feel they have to figure everything out on their own, it will be more stressful. Knowing they can get additional help and have those they can turn to will help bring about ease.
• Encourage students to adopt healthy living habits. This includes focusing on getting enough sleep each night, eating healthy foods, getting exercise, and not engaging in activities that may bring more stress into their life, such as skipping classes or vaping in the restroom.
• Discuss stress with students and teach them ways that they can help to address it. In giving them healthy ways to reduce stress, there can also be a “check the stress at the door” policy, so that students enter the classroom leaving all the stress baggage at the door.
“Many students are stressed out because they need additional help, clarification, and a better educational foundation,” added Florence. “While teachers work on reducing the stress in the classroom, we help many students with gaining skills so they understand the materials better and don’t fall behind. The work we do with students is great at helping stress dissolve and students to become more confident.”

The Oxford Method is a community that helps students gain skills, clarity, and confidence. The community focuses on providing a full range of tutoring services on a wide variety of subjects and for all types of students. To remedy this, and restore the economic strength of the middle class while maintaining a safety net for those in need, we must take steps that may sound as radical as the income tax sounded a hundred years ago but are just as necessary. We must begin to tax unrealized gains resulting from investment asset appreciation, and we must stop cold the leakage from inheritance taxes brought about through trust loopholes and excessive exemptions.

Education
Our system of grade school education and our private-public balance of higher education are in need of major repair. The grade school curriculum is poorly serving those who will not be earning a four-year college degree. The costs of college are undermining the benefits of higher education to all but the wealthiest students. Our nation ranks no better than mediocre by international measures of educational attainment. A universal national service program would offer a powerful set of solutions to the educational shortcomings, while providing other social and economic benefits as an extra dividend. The book lays out an 8-point plan and a bold post-secondary program to make education more effective and affordable for both college-bound and work-bound young people.

Healthcare
The United States spends about 18 percent of its GNP on healthcare, while the rest of the developed world averages a little more than half that. Yet, our people experience worse health outcomes than those in other nations. The extra spending exceeds a trillion dollars a year, a vast amount you could put to many better uses. Only within the framework of a single-payer, single-negotiator, single-regulator system can we provide rationality, sensible incentives, and cost-effective administration. The gain to the public of a trillion dollars a year would be the largest available boost to the economy within reach today, and proper incentives would improve America’s health outcomes

Financial Sector Reform
With first-hand experience as a financial regulator, Stone shows how an out-of-control gargantuan banking, derivatives and hedge fund sector can be curbed to make finance serve, rather than dominate, America’s real commercial sector. The emergence of unmanageably large and complex banks whose failures would bring all of us down, the creation of hedge funds whose security and business practices remain beyond regulatory purview, and the rise of derivatives traded with nearly unlimited leverage, all contribute to the financial sector’s enrichment at the rest of the economy’s expense. The overall scale of the financial sector is out of proportion to its economic value. The current situation is at least as hazardous as before the crash. Banks should be downsized. Hedge funds should cease to exist outside of the successful and safe regulatory structure applied to mutual funds. And derivatives trading should be backed up by reserves that would reduce its volume to a tiny fraction of today’s unimaginable numbers.

While these theses are by no means “easy”, together they have the potential to break through political paralysis and transform the future prospects of America’s next generation. FIVE EASY THESES is the book that is needed now to inspire people on both sides of the political aisle to demand the solutions and leadership that it will take to set our country on the right path.

James (Jim) Stone is the founder, Chairman and CEO of the Plymouth Rock group of companies. He began his career by teaching economics, after earning a Ph.D. in economics at Harvard. He served as Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner from 1975 to 1979 and then as Chairman and Commissioner of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission for four years. CUNY The City University of New York. There is a lot of Good News at the newest community college in New York City in decades. We speak to the President, Dr. Scott Evenbeck
Established on September 20, 2011, with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s approval of A Master Plan Amendment, The New Community College at CUNY was the University’s first new community college in more than 40 years. The second community college in Manhattan was inspired by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein’s interest in improving graduation rates for CUNY’s diverse urban students with a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. “There is no more urgent task in higher education than to find ways to help more community college students succeed,” the Chancellor has said.
The New Community College at CUNY officially opened its doors in midtown Manhattan overlooking Bryant Park on August 20, 2012, after four years of planning in consultation with experts from around the country and hundreds of faculty and staff across the University. At the college’s inaugural Convocation, CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein awarded Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal from The City University of New York for his support and commitment to the development of this innovative new college. In accepting the medal the Mayor commented, “I think this school has the potential to be a game-changing model for community colleges across the country.”
The New Community College enrolled its inaugural class of 300 students in the fall of 2012. As an open-admissions institution, the college accepts applicants who have a high school diploma or a GED. Enrollment will grow to approximately 5,000 when the college moves to its permanent home at 59th Street and 10th Avenue.

In April 2013 The City University of New York received a $25 million gift from the Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation to support The New Community College at CUNY and two other community college initiatives to boost student retention and graduation rates. In honor of the $15 million endowment gift to the college, the foundation’s largest and the largest ever given to a New York State community college, the CUNY Board of Trustees passed a resolution to rename The New Community College Stella and Charles Guttman Community College. The gift will provide support for activities such as paid internships, community service and experiential learning and for scholarships and student emergency funds.
The Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation focuses much of its grantmaking on educational programs and social services to support low-income New York City children, youth and families. The son of immigrants, Charles Guttman was raised on the Lower East Side and attended public school until age 13, when he began working odd jobs to help support his family. In adulthood he built a successful business, The Paddington Corp. In 1959, he and his wife, Stella Rappaport Guttman, established the Guttman Foundation for the “improvement and benefit of mankind, and the alleviation of human suffering.” Upon their deaths in 1969, without leaving descendants, the Guttmans bequeathed substantially all of their assets to the Foundation.

AUG 2nd , 2012 NY, NY – In Celebration of the “Year of the Water Dragon” the organizing committee of the 22nd Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (HKDBF-NY) announced that this year’s competition is to be held on Saturday, August 4th & Sunday, August 5th, 2012. It will feature cash & prizes for competitors in this year’s US Dragon Boat Open Championship.
Other festival events consist of several new special Cup races, the Hong Kong SAR Family Invitational and the Hong Kong Business Family Invitational honoring the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Municipal Cup featuring teams from several of our elected officials and government agencies and the Health Invitational along with special youth, women and sponsor races, plus a Media challenge and a Charity race featuring $7,500 to be donated to the charities designated by the competing teams. The Charity Race participants include HSBC USA, DCH and Shanghai Commercial Bank Ltd. Each of them will contribute $2500 to put in the charity fund. This year’s Corporate Invitational looks to be a good one, with many Corporate Teams joining us to race for their company. The Festival will be held at Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York rain or shine. Admission is free.
HKDBF-NY, a multicultural celebration and sporting event, is the largest multicultural Festival in New York and the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. HKDBF NY keeps up the age old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in colorful, custom made teak boats, which are virtual works of art gliding on water. Custom made by a small coterie of craftsmen in Hong Kong, weighing one ton each, colorfully painted with a Dragon head at the front and Dragon tail at the rear, the boats are piloted by up to 20 crewmen, including 18 paddlers, a drummer and steers person. For twenty-one successful years HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse, multi-cultural audience of more than 60,000 attendees throughout North America. With more than 180+ well-trained teams, involving more than 2,500 participants competing from across the U.S. and Canada, this year’s festival is expected to be notable in its scale and fierce competition.
With cash & prizes at stake for the US Dragon Boat Open Championships, the festival takes place over two days on the site of the 1964 World’s Fair, featuring events for the entire family. The opening day parade at noon on Saturday, August 4th will be followed by the New York City Championship Races. The U.S. Dragon Boat Open Championship will be held on Sunday, August 5th with the teams vigorously competing for their share of the cash & prizes.
Racing starts at 9:00 a.m. and events last throughout the day until approximately 5:00 p.m. each day, rain or shine. Other festival events consist of the corporate youth, women’s invitational, and sponsors challenge, a photo contest as well as presentations on the VERIZON STAGE of traditional Chinese arts, martial arts demonstrations, the traditional Dragon dance, musical and other diverse performances and demonstrations of folk arts and crafts.
This year we have a very special appearance from the Award winning Lion Dancers from Zhanjian, Guangdong, China. This team is the recipient of China’s last Lion Dancers competition. sponsored by the Chinese Association of Lion Dancers and Dragon Dancing Teams (a division of China’s national Sport Association). They will perform the colorful and exciting Southern style of Lion Dancing.
An ethnic food court and booths staffed by sponsors of the event many of whom will be giving away promotional items, and many community-based organizations participating help make for a unique, action packed, multi-cultural, New York weekend.
The tradition of Dragon Boat Racing is an annual Chinese rite commemorating the idealistic poet and reformer Qu Yuan who drowned himself in the third century B.C. to protest against his emperor’s policies. The locals raced in their boats in an attempt to rescue the poet. To prevent fish and water dragons from eating his body, the locals beat their drums and splashed their paddles. This was the beginning of Dragon Boat Racing.
Admission to the HKDBF-NY is Free, Events take place Rain or Shine. Directions to the Festival by car – take the Long Island Expressway to Van Wyck Expressway to exit 11 south, then stay on service road to the Park. Parking is severely limited. Please take the MTA or car pool. Directions to the Festival by bus/subway –Again this year we’ve worked with the MTA to insure easy and safe transportation to the Festival site. Festival goers can use their MetroCard to take the #7 Train to the CitiField stop and transfer from there to special MTA shuttle buses that will take them directly to the Festival site, or they can walk from the CitiField stop (about 15 minutes) or take the colorful park trolley to the festival site. Parking on-site is limited, you can park at CitiField and take the special MTA shuttle with your MetroCard or use correct change.
