Community Board Application Deadline EXTENDED to Friday, March 6

You now have until March 6 at 5pm to apply for a position on a community board, the most grassroots form of local government and official liaison between your neighborhood and elected officials.

You can learn about the location and work of your community board here. You must be at least 16 years old and live, work, or attend school in the community board to which you’re applying.

I’m hosting an ICE preparedness town hall and training this Sunday, March 1 at 5:30 pm at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church (225 W. 99th St.) We’ll have a panel on learnings from Minneapolis’ response to ICE and a training on what to do if ICE shows up. No RSVP necessary.

Applications for Free 3-K and Pre-K Seats Close TOMORROW, Friday, Feb. 27

Families with children born in 2022 and 2023 can apply for a free 3-K or pre-K seat through this Friday, February 27. Families can apply online at MySchools.nyc, over the phone at 718-935-2009, or at a Family Welcome Center (Manhattan’s two FWCs are at 123 Morningside Dr. in Morningside Heights and 333 7th Ave. in Chelsea). 3-K and pre-K offers will be sent out in mid-May.

Last week, I was thrilled to join Mayor Mamdani to announce a new NYC childcare site on the Upper East Side at 65th Street, which will have 72 pre-K seats and 60 3-K seats this fall.

        In the past year, the board of directors of the JCC (Jewish Community Center) has met several times to organize a group exhibition joined by more than two dozens of American and Chinese artists invited by, Jing Bao, the owner of Jing Bao’s Moonlight Art Studio, and the president of JIUYA Art Association, XiaoFeng Tong.

And the secret guest will show up in the opening, famous actor SiHan Sun( 孙思翰）

After researching and proofreading, the board of directors of JCC have made decision to present a calligraphy and painting group exhibition with Jing Bao and XiaoFeng Tong, titled as “West Meets East”.

This group exhibition will be a highlight event at the JCC to begin 2023. It includes the artwork of several renowned international artists from America and China, such as Xiaoqing Liu, a famous Chinese actress also known for her calligraphy; 1000 pieces of her calligraphy were sold out within 1 hour last year when she did a live TV Sale for her fan. Chris Spollen, whose artworks have been collected and shown in America, Europe, and China; the Pentagon has an art of his hung on the wall today. Joe Ciardiello, Michael Garland, and Daniel Pelavin, internationally known artists, illustrators, and authors, their work have been featured on most major magazines, newspapers, and for corporate and advertising clients, book publishers and record companies, such as American Express, Audubon, Barnes & Noble, Capitol Records, The Nation, The New Yorker, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone and Time. Their works were included in numerous group exhibitions at museums, galleries, universities, CBS NBC and ABC and many others in the entertainment field throughout the country.
Professor Dazhou Wang has partnered with prominent corporations such as Disney, MTV, Victoria’s Secret, Estee Lauder, Revlon, Clinique, Guess, Brooks Brothers, etc. to develop and design numerous projects. In addition, he has also collaborated with many eminent designers such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and so on in product development and design. His art also have been featured around the world including various exhibitions in China which received numerous awards.

The group exhibition also includes famous calligrapher ChangJiang Wang, ShouWu Cong, Chinese painting painter Wei Xu, Staten Island local artist Bill Murphy, and David Bamundo.

As the presenter, professor Jing Bao also has her paintings featured in this amazing group exhibition.

Disney Publishing Worldwide, book industry professionals, media and well-wishers came together for the launch of Melissa De la Cruz (MEL) Studio at a reception held at Versa in New York City with special guests Melissa De la Cruz and Mariko Tamaki, author of one of the first Melissa de la Cruz Studio projects, Anne of Greenville.

The dazzling evening we experienced at The Metropolitan Club was Gala in every sense of the word. Luminaries of the Opera World gathered in force to celebrate the next generation of opera stars, recipients of awards from The Schuyler Foundation for Career Bridges. What does that title symbolize? A bridge from studio to stage.

The Foundation has been performing a vital service for 18 years now. Career Bridges was founded by David Schuyler Bender and Barbara Meister Bender with the mission of providing vital assistance to young opera singers as they transition from training to stage. Awardees receive three years of mentoring, financial support, and performance opportunities. Every year, except during the pandemic, Career Bridges spearheads a competition where they give career grants to 10 young artists. Those winners have the opportunity to sing for and receive expert critique from a panel of professionals in the business; directors, voice teachers, performers etc. The singers are then granted a conference with David and Barbara where the critiques are discussed and further helpful suggestions are given. The grant winners have the opportunity to return for 3 more years to “check in” to see if the hard work they have done has been realized for the panel. What an incredible mentorship for these fortunate young artists.

The Benders are one of those beautiful, power couples whose welcoming remarks set the evening off with a wonderful start. Guests that had not attended events in the last three years, due to the pandemic, basked in the delightful entertainment which enveloped them throughout the evening. Many who have attended most of the Gala’s commented that this was the best array of talent they had found in all the foundation’s long history. That is saying something since they have found world class talent each year.

This year Career Bridges selected ten outstanding, young opera singers.

Joanne Evans opened the program with a technically and artistically perfect rendition of Handel’s famous trumpet and mezzo solo “Or La Tromba”. Followed by the world famous aria, In diesen eil’gen Hallen from Mozart’s famous opera Die Zauberflote sung masterfully by the wonderful voiced Bass, Matthew Soibelman. The highlight of this section was the presentation of The Rose performed by Soprano, Kayleigh Riess. Tenor, Thomas Ciliuffo brought to life the ? …… The virile voiced, Baritone, Samson McCrady excelled with the world famous, largo ao factotem by Rossini.

Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award was the incomparable, Eve Queler, who is one of the first women to establish herself in the traditionally male-dominated field of orchestral conducting. As a guest conductor of many European and South American orchestras, as well as through her work as music director of The Opera Orchestra of New York which she founded in 1971, she has conducted high-quality performances of seldom-heard masterpieces, featuring internationally acclaimed stars. Eve has conducted over 100 operas in concert at Carnegie Hall. In addition, she has conducted worldwide, including engagements at the Kirov Opera in St Petersburg, the legendary Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the Hamburg and Frankfurt Operas in Germany, the Australian Opera in Sydney and the Liceu in Barcelona, Spain, to name a few.

After Eve Queler’s award, the piece de resistance of the evening was the outstanding performance by Key’mon Murrah, Countertenor whose rendition of the ah! quel giorno ognor rammento by Rossini brought down the house. Mezzo Soprano, Lisa Rogali’s rendition of Una voce poco fa by Rossini revealed a warm, beautiful voice peppered with technically perfect coloratura. Most impressive was the fantastically realized performance of Wagner’s Zwangvolle Plage! sung by Tenor, Thomas Ciliuffo. The performance of Sein wir wieder gut! was artistically and dramatically performed by Mezzo Soprano, Mary Beth Nelson.

Superstar mezzo-soprano, Jane Shaulis, spoke eloquently as she received the Distinguished Achievement Award. She has been a staple of the Metropolitan Opera’s roster for 25 years appearing in 561 performances and heard in 67 radio broadcasts. This past season she sang in the new HD production of Lulu. Prior to joining the Met she performed with the New York City Opera for 15 years, appearing in over 60 roles. She has also sung with the major opera companies, including San Francisco, Chicago, and San Diego and has performed with many major orchestras, including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, as well as the festivals in Spoleto and Glyndebourne.

22 year old Mezzo Soprano, Mala Weissberg impressed us all with the beautifully realized rendition of Meyerbeer’s Nobles seigneurs, salut! Qui la voce sua soave…Vien diletto composed by Bellini was sung by Soprano Keungeun Lee highlighted by her clear cut coloratura. An audience favorite, the flower duet from Lakme was brought to life by the beautifully matched voices of Kaileigh Riess and Mala Weissberg, Mezzo Soprano.

The tribute in memoriam was made to Laurence Broderick, 2006 Grant winner, whose life was cut short in a boating accident. The tribute began with a heartfelt rendition of Abendilch by Wagner sung by Bass-Baritone, John Dominick, III, 2006 Career Bridges’ winner. His mother and brother accepted the moving tribute in his memory.

Cindy is an international actress, a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio (having studied under Mark Rydell, the late Martin Landau, Ellen Burstyn and Alec Baldwin.) She is a Chicago Second City Conservatory graduate (Nia Vardalos, Stephen Colbert). On TV, she was recently seen in UPtv’s holiday special “Beverly Hills Christmas” with Dean Cain.

Cindy produces and stars in “Dietrich”, an acclaimed new solo show (written by play write Willard Manus) which honors legendary performer, patriot and feminist Marlene Dietrich.

Cindy is the owner of Angel Baker Productions. With her international, creative team she wrote, produced and starred in “Eternal Waltz”, a story about a soul connection through lifetimes (sponsored in part by the Johann Strauss Foundation of Germany). She and her cast won “Best Acting Ensemble-Short” in the Culver City Film Festival and screened in Amsterdam, Las Vegas as well as Woodstock, NY this summer. Eternalwaltzfilm.net

Cindy has had leading roles on stage since kindergarten, when she played her first queen, got her first laugh and fell in love with the stage. She has continued on the boards in Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Berlin and Los Angeles, originating over thirteen roles in new plays.

Cindy is also a voice over artist. Her uniquely deep voice was personally chosen by Beyonce’s family to narrate her international half hour special for E! Entertainment. Cindy voiced two characters in the number one video game Brutal Legends with Jack Black, Ozzie Osbourne and other rock legends.

Cindy is a ballroom dancer with a passion for Latin dancing. She graduated Cum Laude from Purdue University and is an avid kitten rescuer who maintains an animal-free diet.

Retired Deputy Chief David Curtis (North Hudson Fire and Rescue) is the current Weehawken Councilman at Large, as well as the Weehawken Board of Education Construction Manager.

Of interest, he was the first person on the scene when Captain Sully landed his commercial plane in the Hudson River. He received a Command Award for his actions overseeing the emergency agencies to rescue the passengers.

During his lifetime, David Curtis has been successful as a mason, contractor, foreman, business owner, model, boxer, runner, and fitness instructor. Presently, he is writing a book on Leadership. He is the proud father of two grown children (Corin and David) and is grandfather to baby Cooper.

Errol Rappaport, as a man for all seasons,has helped so many with his public relations skills.  One of his efforts helped create awareness that Meningitis is a Vacine preventable disease.  Rappaport in Residence – A dream of Passion – Podcast sponsored by the Daisy Jopling Music Mentoring Foundation.

• Teaching Transcendental Meditation
• VETWELL– “Community Based Holistic Wellness” program

OperationWarrior Shield is led by CMSgt(ret) Edward Schloeman, John Walsh, Walter Primoff, and Lt Col. (ret)Patrick Kernan, and Special Advisor Anne Akers.

Over the last 8 years, Ed Schloeman and the late Jerry Yellin, traveled the country speaking on behalf of the non-religious modality of Transcendental Meditation – TM. In turn, they became partners with many veteran service organizations – Wounded Warrior Project, USO, US Army,  USMC, NYC Department of Veterans Services and others.

Today, we have partnered with the David Lynch Foundation to bring proven treatments to help “heal the hidden wounds” and to build resilience to the stresses of life.

All donations raised from the release of the campaign will go directly to the NHS and runs alongside our music memorabilia auction, Rock and Ribbon which raises funds for ‘NHS Charities Together’ though bids on our iconic items.
