ESG Today: Nearly 90% of C-Suite execs want compensation tied to human sustainability metrics, Deloitte survey finds, and more…

With rising human sustainability challenges, the study indicated that companies are facing a series of risks on these issues, including employee retention at both the worker and executive levels, with 59% of workers and 71% of C-suite respondents reporting that they would seriously consider taking a job with another company that would support their well-being. Notably, 80% of executives said that they would be more likely to accept a job at a company advancing human sustainability, and 61% saying that they would even accept a pay cut to do so.

Preliminary results of a Kanopy survey of more than 960 librarians, publicly available January 2021, show that 94% of academic and 86% of public libraries say Collection Diversity is “very important” to “important.” Yet only 26% and 29% respectively say they are fully meeting their users’ needs for such content.

“With such a large student body, at an urban institution, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) is a huge “issue” on campus, meaning that there is a huge interest in all aspects at every level of the institution,” explained one academic librarian who participated in the survey.

“Our community is diverse. Many languages other than English are spoken in the homes of our patrons, we also serve a community that is very diverse in age, income level, education level, etc. More than 30% of our service population were born outside the US. We need a diverse collection to meet the diverse needs of our diverse community,” added a public library survey participant.

“We are currently engaged in an evaluation of the diversity of our whole collection. It is a slow process as there has not been standards across the industries involved for measuring diversity. Our existing catalogue has no easy way to measure diversity…,” wrote another public library participant.

Kanopy is helping more than 4,000 academic and public libraries around the globe fulfill the need for Collection Diversity with a growing selection of films, many of which are unavailable on any other streaming video platform. The company currently offers more than 30,000 titles—many of which are categorized as diverse—including a rich selection of non-English language titles.

Examples of Kanopy’s content focused on diversity, include:

• Skin: Inspired by real-life events, this Oscar-winner is set in a small supermarket in a blue collar town, where a black man smiles at a 10-year-old white boy across the checkout aisle. This innocuous moment sends two gangs into a ruthless war that ends with a shocking backlash. SKIN was the Winner of the 2019 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.

• I Am Not Your Negro: This Oscar-nominated documentary narrated by Samuel L. Jackson explores the continued peril America faces from institutionalized racism.

• Latinos Beyond Reel: Filmmakers Miguel Picker and Chyng Sun examine how US news and entertainment media portray — and do not portray — Latinos.

• Race – The Power of an Illusion: This film questions the very idea of race as innate biology, suggesting that a belief in inborn racial difference is no more sound than believing that the sun revolves around the earth.

• A Brave Heart:The Lizzie Velasquez Story – This award-winning documentary follows Lizzie’s triumphant journey to the other side of bullying, encouraging a more positive online environment.

• Stonewall Uprising: This film explores how In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. Such raids were not unusual in the late 1960s, an era when homosexuality was banned in 49 out of 50 states. That night, however, the street erupted into violent protests and demonstrations that lasted for the next six days.

“Kanopy recognizes that identifying diversity gaps in a library’s collection and finding resources to fill them can be challenging from both a time and financial standpoint,” said Kanopy CEO Kevin Sayar. “We aim to continually work with our suppliers to make it easy and affordable for libraries to meet their Collection Diversity goals.”

About Kanopy

The health benefits of wine can sometimes be overstated by people who are a few glasses deep and slurring their words. Should you ever find yourself in a position to defend your moderate imbibing, you have supporting evidence: A new study says two glasses of wine daily can potentially reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

The study, which appears in Scientific Reports, shows that wine has an effect on one’s glymphatic function, or the way the brain removes toxins. To clear itself of damaging and accumulated proteins like tau and beta amyloid, which are often linked with dementia, the brain pumps in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) to act as a flushing solution. All sorts of variables can influence the glymphatic system’s operation, including trauma, stroke, and excessive alcohol intake.
But when researchers dosed the mice in the study with moderate alcohol—amounting to 2.6 drinks daily—the glymphatic system was more efficient, removing more waste and exhibiting less inflammation than the teetotaling control mice.

As is usually the case when it comes to booze, you can have too much of a good thing. When mice got the equivalent of 7.9 drinks daily, their glymphatic system grew sluggish until the overindulging was terminated.

“Studies have shown that low-to-moderate alcohol intake is associated with a lesser risk of dementia, while heavy drinking for many years confers an increased risk of cognitive decline,” lead study author Maiken Nedergaard, of the University of Rochester Medical Center, said in a press statement. “This study may help explain why this occurs. Specifically, low doses of alcohol appear to improve overall brain health.”

Approximately 600 scholarships are available for the 2014-15 academic year for American high school students to study language through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. NSLI-Y is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal and informal language learning through a study abroad experience, which includes language classes and living in a local community abroad, often with a host family.

Scholarships to participate in summer or academic year programs are available for the study of Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish. The merit-based scholarships cover domestic and international travel, tuition and related academic expenses, daily language classes, supporting cultural activities, room and board, and secondary health benefits for travel abroad.

Launched in 2006, the goal of NSLI-Y is to increase the number of young Americans with the language skills necessary to advance international dialogue and increase understanding between cultures. Alumni of NSLI-Y can become leaders in a variety of international fields in the private, academic or government sector. NSLI-Y is administered by American Councils for International Education, in cooperation with AFS-USA, iEARN, American Cultural Exchange Service (ACES), Americans Promoting Study Abroad (APSA), AMIDEAST, Legacy International, Russian American Foundation (RAF), and University of Delaware.

Today’s automotive technology goes far beyond advanced navigation systems and improved airbags. New features such as smart headlights, blind spot warning and reverse monitoring systems are revolutionizing the way we drive. And the latest high-tech options are not only for the gadget obsessed – they have the potential to positively impact drivers ages 50+.

In fact, a new study from the MIT AgeLab found that while just over one third of mature drivers have at least one top technology, 51% said they would feel safer if their vehicle had all of the most up-to-date technologies. The survey also found that 55% of mature drivers plan to buy or lease another vehicle in the next five years, suggesting that as more and more of these features are incorporated into new vehicles, a growing number of consumers 50+ could be driving cars with these technologies.

On September 17, Joseph Coughlin, Director of the MIT AgeLab and Jodi Olshevski, a leading gerontologist and Executive Director of The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence, can talk to your listeners about this research and driving safety among older drivers.

They’ll share a new consumer ranking of the top ten technologies that are most likely to benefit mature drivers — a follow up to a study last year — as well as information on drivers’ confidence level in learning how to use these new technologies. They can also discuss the warning signs for older drivers and how to identify and adjust driving behaviors to stay safe on the road.

About Joseph F. Coughlin, Ph.D., Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s AgeLab

Joseph F. Coughlin, Ph.D., is Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s AgeLab. His research seeks to understand how demographic change and social trends and technology converge to drive future innovations in business and government. Based in MIT’s Engineering Systems Division, Dr. Coughlin teaches policy and systems innovation, as well as a course on social media and information seeking behaviors in health and finance. Dr. Coughlin is an editor and key contributor to Aging America and Transportation: Personal Choices and Public Policy, published in 2012 by Springer. Dr. Coughlin is a frequent guest on news programs; his work has been featured in both print and on television – ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, NBC, News Asia, Economist, Financial Times, The Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other media outlets throughout the world.

About Jodi Olshevski, M.S., Gerontology

Jodi Olshevski is executive director of The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence, leading a team of corporate gerontologists who conduct primary research and deliver expert services across The Hartford and to selected businesses. The team has won numerous awards, and is nationally-recognized as the pre-eminent corporate gerontology organization in the United States. An expert on a wide array of aging related topics, such as caregiving, eldercare, housing, and older driver issues, Olshevski has been interviewed widely by national and regional television and radio shows, including the CBS Early Show and NBC Nightly News, and by national publications such as the Chicago Tribune, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, and the AARP Bulletin, to name a few.
Targeting Working Americans

Radio Interviews with President of the Council for Disability

Awareness Barry Lundquist

More than one in four of today’s entrants to America’s workforce will suffer an income-interrupting disability at some point during their working careers. But a recent Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) study shows that despite the potentially catastrophic financial impact, most Americans, and even their financial advisors, significantly underestimate their odds of becoming disabled. Worse yet, about two-thirds of the workforce is not covered by private long term disability insurance.

In an effort to engage Americans about the critical importance of protecting their ability to earn an income, the CDA has launched the Defend Your Income movement. This educational program seeks to unite consumers, advisors, employers and insurers in the fight to protect the incomes of working Americans from the financial risks of serious illness or injury.

In interviews on November 13th, Barry Lundquist will give tips on the risks and consequences of experiencing an income limiting sickness or accident, and how to protect your most valuable financial resource – your income.

Barry Lundquist’s professional background includes over 30 years of insurance industry success in underwriting, sales, sales leadership, senior executive management and consulting roles for employee benefits and individual disability products and sales channels at Paul Revere, Provident and Unum. In 2000, Barry founded Eastport Marketing Group, a consulting and marketing services company that helps insurance companies and distributors improve results. Since May of 2009, Barry has served as President of the Council for Disability awareness, based in Portland, Maine.
