In the face of these trends that have upended thousands of lives, Red Cross volunteers are now responding to nearly twice as many major disasters than a decade ago — and relying on generous donations to be able to deliver emergency shelter, food, relief supplies, financial assistance and more.

These major disasters are also taking a hidden toll on communities and exacerbating people’s long-term health problems. That’s why the Red Cross makes sure that people have access to basic health care and emotional support at emergency shelters after disasters. This can include helping to replace lost prescription medications and medical equipment.

What’s more, these massive events are on top of everyday crises like home fires and storms — which are just as devastating to the families suffering from them. All told, generous donations make it possible for Red Cross volunteers to respond every 8 minutes to help families in need across the country.

Anne McKeough, chief development officer, American Red Cross, will discuss these disaster trends and how donations fuel the organization’s response to help ensure no one faces a crisis alone. She’ll also talk about how people can get involved by giving donations to help people affected by disasters big and small.

According to the official confirmation of Shenzhen Health Commission, the outbreak in Shenzhen is caused by the mutated strain BA2 of Omicron, which is highly contagious and fast mutating, making it twice as difficult to prevent the epidemic and without reference to domestic experience. There is also the geopolitical factor of Shenzhen and Hong Kong being one, which is one of the most difficult reasons for this outbreak. The Hong Kong epidemic is like a weir hanging high at the country’s gate, and once it breaks, the consequences will be unimaginable. In this way, Shenzhen’s perseverance is not a battle of a city and a local battle. Nevertheless, 20 million Shenzhen people are still united to fight the epidemic! The founder of Shenzhen Ma’s Sheng Clan Industry Holding (Group) Co., Ltd, Ma Xiaoqiu, led the company to take the lead in fighting the epidemic.

At the beginning of 2020, in the face of the sudden epidemic, Ma Xiaoqiu, the founder of Shenzhen outstanding women entrepreneurs, Ma’s first time to lead the group’s management staff non-stop around to raise supplies, raised a large number of masks, protective clothing, alcohol, protective goggles, hygiene supplies and Chinese medicine and other medical supplies shipped to Wuhan, Jiangxi, Chengdu, Shenzhen and other places, donations of more than 3 million yuan. Ma Xiaoqiu once said, “The world needs me, I will do my best to feed”.

In November 2021, Ma’s subsidiary Fuhui International Group (1034.HK) took practical action to practice a corporate responsibility and commitment by donating 10,000 sets of protective clothing, 10,000 N95 masks, 20,000 medical surgical masks, 6,000 boxes of noodles, and 2 tons of medical alcohol to Gangu County …… The epidemic prevention materials of 526,600 yuan built a protection and sent a care for the medical workers fighting in the front line, and helped win the epidemic prevention and control battle comprehensively.

In January 2022, when the epidemic broke out in Xi’an, Mr. Liu Xin Yi, CEO of FHI Group (1034.HK), a subsidiary of Ma’s, contributed RMB 280,000 to raise 500 sets of disinfection sprayers for loading and successfully delivered them to Xi’an after traveling 1,768 kilometers, contributing to the fight against the epidemic in Xi’an. In addition, Fuhui International also donated an additional $565,000 in cash and purchased three ambulances to support the epidemic prevention work in Xi’an.

Since the fifth wave of the epidemic in Hong Kong, MAFHI launched the “Rapid Test and Emergency Supplies Donation Campaign”, donating a total of HK$2 million worth of supplies and preparing for the epidemic prevention and support operation. A team of volunteers was quickly formed to go to the front line of the epidemic, running around in the communities and streets of Hong Kong, delivering epidemic supplies to Hong Kong people in need

In March, Ma’s Tiancheng Mingdao Medical Technology teamed up with a number of folk herbalists to carry out a charity donation campaign in Shenzhen’s Greater Bay Area, giving out free herbal packs for the public to make herbal tea to boost their immunity and actively fight the new strain. The donation campaign received an overwhelming response as soon as it was released, with citizens registering through social networking platforms and the organizers distributing them by courier or self-pickup. In less than 48 hours, nearly 1,000 people have registered for the campaign, far exceeding the company’s estimate.

In the face of the epidemic, in addition to material assistance, Ma Xiaoqiu also inspired people in spirit. She personally composed and sang the song “Only Wish”, the first song in the world to fight against the epidemic, which has been broadcasted over 1 billion times on the Internet and has been moved and praised by friends at home and abroad and covered by singers; she participated in the filming of the microfilm “Seal the City” to fight against the epidemic, which has been widely praised by countless viewers since its release on the Internet and won the 2021 Award. “Since its online release, it has been widely praised by countless viewers and won the first prize in the 2021 National Microfilm Competition, as well as the Best Director Award and the Best Actor Award.

In fact, Ma Xiaoqiu has been committed to charity for many years. She has initiated the “Wutong Tree Project”, a public welfare project targeting poor college students, helping many poor students from poor families to successfully complete their college education and become useful talents in society. As soon as her plane touched down in America, Riley knew she wanted to go back. At the age of 14, Riley started a non-profit, Generation Next, to help collect school supplies for Kenyan schools and returned the following year with 200 backpacks filled with donated supplies.

“I had no idea that God was going to use what happened at that school, with those kids, to begin weaving Africa into the fabric of my story,” says Riley. “God put a love for Kenyan children in my heart and gave me an impulse to want to help them.”

In Riley Unlikely: With Simple Child-Like Faith, Amazing Things Can Happen, Riley brings readers on her journeys to Kenya and the unexpected hardships and disappointments that showed Riley how to truly trust in God. From the first smells when her plane touches down to God planting the idea of opening a school in Kibwezi, Kenya, Riley shows the immense impact one life can have and encourages readers to find their own passions. Not everyone will be called to Kenya to build schools and community centers, but everyone can do something to make a profound difference.

From the very beginning, Riley had a vision that ordinary people can have extra ordinary impact, one life at a time. That dream carried her through several big twists and turns, but she always saw the beauty of God working in mysterious ways.

Riley’s focus turned to helping Kenyan orphans after she was diagnosed at 16 with a rare condition that left her unable to have biological children. She saw that even though she was not

able to have her own children, God had put hundreds of Kenyan children in her life to love and take care of.

Today, Riley is 19, and works full-time for her ministry and can be found at Riley’s Treasures, Generation Next’s thrift store and food pantry in Branson, when she is not in Kenya. Generation Next opened a school in Kibwezi, Kenya and in January bought a 7000 square foot building with five acres to use for a community center. They will teach women to sew, provide a feeding program, a safe house for kids and a sports complex for the kids to play on as well as farming. She and her new husband Graham plan to live part time in Kenya when Graham is finished with college. They will make their home at the community center, to oversee the day to day operations.

Riley Banks is the founder and executive director of Generation Next, a non-profit she established at the age of 14. Generation Next has built and oversees a school in Kibwezi, Kenya, and runs a thrift shop and food pantry in Branson, Missouri, to fund operations. Riley’s heart is for Africa and for reminding every young person that they can do more to change the world than they could ever imagine. She lives in Branson, MO with her husband Graham.
