Each year on July 27th, the U.S. Army celebrates the Army Medicine Anniversary. The Army Reserve is a unique and significant contributor to the Army’s overall medical system. The Army Reserve began as a small corps of medical professionals in 1908 and has evolved into what is now the best trained, best equipped, and most ready Army Reserve in our Nation’s history. Most notably, 55% of all Army operational medical forces reside in the Army Reserve, including two deployable medical commands, the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), Salt Lake City, Utah and the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), Atlanta, Georgia.

Today, the U.S. Army Reserve is home to over 60 percent of the total force’s critical care nurses, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians and obstetricians. The Army Reserve provides the active Army with 306 medical units.

Many Army Reserve medical Soldiers have skill sets that are honed by their respective civilian jobs, from specialized physicians to surgeons, offering every capability needed in order to deploy and complete medical missions. The Army Reserve also works with top medical facilities in the country to remain on the cutting edge of research and education and provide unmatched capabilities and responsiveness.

The Army Reserve assists the active Army and the community in times of need. Army Reserve medical units support stateside missions, which provide real world opportunities for Soldiers to administer medical, dental and optometry care in underserved American communities.

MD, CM, FACS, FACOG, FRCS(C), Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus Obstetrics and Gynecology, Weill Medical College of Cornell University

Ronald M. Caplan MD is an Obstetrician Gynecologist and medical author.

He did his medical and postgraduate training at McGill University, where his interest in renal disease in pregnancy and homotransplantation culminated in the first delivery of a baby from a mother who had received a deceased donor kidney transplant.

After serving on the Faculty of McGill University, he transferred to New York City, and a long career at the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University , where he became one of the early proponents of minimally invasive surgery, and where he is now Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada).

He previously edited the textbooks Principles of Obstetrics, which was translated into both Spanish and Portuguese, and Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which was translated into Spanish. He authored another four mass market medical books in multiple editions. Prestigious medical and comprehensive libraries around the world hold copies of his work.

Dr. Re is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon. He is fellowship trained and specializes in Arthroscopic Shoulder, Knee, and Sports Medicine reconstruction surgery. Dr. Re graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia College then went on to the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He completed his surgical internship at Yale University, where he continued on to complete his residency in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Yale University School of Medicine.

He is well known for his work on several research projects involving shoulder and knee reconstructions, and is an alumnus of the Arthroscopic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute.

He has been an Assistant Clinical Professor, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and is currently Clinical Instructor, Shoulder Reconstruction and Arthroscopy Mount Sinai-Roosevelt Hospital.

He has been voted teacher of the year twice and is currently continuing research on the outcome of Graft Reconstruction for Massive Rotator Cuff Tears.

Dr. Re is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Sports Medicine.
