September is National Cholesterol Education Month, an annual observance aimed at raising awareness about the importance of managing cholesterol levels. The month is dedicated to educating the public about the heart disease risks associated with high cholesterol and the steps individuals can take to help maintain healthy levels. It’s the perfect time to meet the animated characters called the “Lipid Lurkers”—a visual representation of an often-unnoticed risk lurking in patients’ artery walls. While they may look small and silly, they represent a very real and dangerous health threat. Fat and cholesterol are types of lipids transported through the blood. Certain types of lipids, particularly LDL-C or “bad” cholesterol, can lead to buildup of plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease or stroke. This campaign was created to help educate and empower the nearly 100 million U.S. adults with high LDL-C—especially those who can’t take statins (medications to lower cholesterol) or who have uncontrolled cholesterol and haven’t reached their target levels despite treatment. Now, there are solutions that offer an alternative to statins— additional options for lowering LDL cholesterol—while also lowering the risk of heart attacks and heart procedures like stent placement or bypass surgery On Wednesday, September 10, LeAnne Bloedon, MS, RD, Vice President, Clinical Development at Esperion Therapeutics, will be available to discuss the havoc that too much bad cholesterol can cause inside artery walls—and how to lower your cholesterol. She’ll also outline: What high LDL cholesterol really does to your body (and why it’s often silent) Why managing cholesterol matters before your first cardiovascular event How the “Lipid Lurkers” campaign is making heart health more accessible, relatable, and even fun Who’s at risk—and what new options are available beyond traditional statins https://www.fiercepharma.com/marketing/esperions-lipid-lurkers-campaign-sheds-light-high-ldl-cholesterol-hiding-artery-walls

A new survey sheds light on the many ways that acute pain can disrupt daily life.

Although pain is one of the most common reasons that people visit the doctor, managing it can be complicated.

So, what’s a patient—or a doctor – to do? Here to talk about the unmet need in treating acute pain is Dr. David Dalury, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery (Emeritus) at the University of Maryland.

vrtx.com

The results show how patients’ lives are affected by acute pain:

70% say it limits them from walking and exercising.
69% says it limits their sleep.
65% says it affects their hobbies and leisure activities.
65% say it made them feel irritable or emotionally drained.
Patients reported missing an average of 19 working days annually.

Pain is one of the most common reasons that people visit the doctor; however, treatment options for the various types and causes of pain remain limited.i,ii,iii

Approximately 40 million Americans with acute pain are prescribed an opioid to manage their discomfort each year.vii Although opioids can be effective, they also carry a labeled risk of addiction.viii In fact, roughly 85,000 U.S. adults are expected to develop opioid use disorder (OUD) within a year of their prescribed treatment of acute pain.vii

Health care providers may prescribe either acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as alternatives for milder pain or additions to opioids for severe acute pain; while these treatments are generally well tolerated, they may have limited effectiveness, particularly for moderate-to-severe acute pain.viii,ix

The survey also shows that:

77% of patients say they are interested in trying a different pain medication if they experience acute pain again.
52% say they are seeking a new pain medication with fewer side effects than their last medication.
31% say they stopped taking their medication before their pain was resolved.
On Wednesday, December 4th, Dr. David Dalury Professor of Orthopedic Surgery (Emeritus) at the University of Maryland will be available to discuss the survey results and help raise awareness about the unmet need in current pain management options and offer solutions.

Tell me about the State of Pain survey. What did it evaluate?

Can you tell us some of the key findings? What did you learn?

Why is it important to focus on pain management right now?

Where can people learn more about the State of Pain survey?

An increasing percentage of lung cancer cases are being diagnosed at an earlier stage, according to the newest American Cancer Society (ACS) Facts and Figures Report. Individuals diagnosed with the disease are also living longer, according to the report.
Go2Foundation.org
Lung cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year, with only breast and skin cancers accounting for more cancer incidences. The ACS estimates that nearly 237,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2022.1

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common form, accounting for approximately 85% of all lung cancers.2 Many people diagnosed with early-stage NSCLC have surgery to remove the cancer; however, for approximately half of these patients, the cancer unfortunately returns.3 Experts agree there is an urgent need for enhanced screening uptake — which has hovered around five percent in recent years amongst those eligible to receive it4 — as well as improved treatment options in early-stage NSCLC to help prevent devastating cancer recurrences.

Studies have shown that treatments beyond chemotherapy, including targeted therapy and now immunotherapy – a type of personalized cancer treatment that activates the immune system to fight cancer – may help improve outcomes for certain patients with early-stage NSCLC after surgery.5 What’s promising is that these studies have now led to U.S. Food and Drug Administration approvals in the post-surgery setting to help reduce the risk of recurrence for patients with specific types of early-stage NSCLC, introducing a new era for these lung cancer patients.

Dr. David Carbone, Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the James Thoracic Oncology Center at Ohio State University Medical Center will discuss the latest progress, including one of the most recent developments in early-stage lung cancer for patients.

At a time when deaths from drug overdoses are on the rise, there’s a new effort to help keep people from getting hooked on prescription opioids in the first place.
The CDC released data reporting that more than 93,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2020, which is an almost 30 percent increase from 2019.
[In advance of Pain Awareness Month in September] Here now to talk about the role non-opioid options can play in the surgical setting to help prevent opioid addiction before it starts, is orthopedic surgeon from Orthopaedic Associates in Houston, Texas Dr. Alan Rechter (“Rek-ter”).

zynrelef.com (http://zynrelef.com)

As we are approaching Pain Awareness Month in September, it is a time to highlight the issues of postoperative pain and postoperative pain management in the United States. Recent data shows that 67% of patients filled an opioid prescription between 30 days before through 14 days after surgery. In the past, postoperative pain management has been a one-size-fits all approach and there is an urgent need for it to be more individualized.
While patients routinely are searching for a safe and effective way to manage the pain they experience following surgery, many tell doctors they want to avoid the adverse effects that are commonly experienced by those receiving opioids to reduce their pain. The most common adverse effects are dizziness, nausea and constipation. But even more than that, patients want to avoid any risk of misuse and addiction.
Now there’s been a new development; what some surgeons are calling a “game-changer” for postoperative pain. The FDA recently approved a treatment that works on both inflammation and pain at the surgical site for up to 3 days for those who undergo bunion surgery, hernia repair and total knee replacement surgeries. Clinical trials have shown that this new treatment reduces the need for and can eliminate in many patients, potentially addictive opioids. The safety and efficacy of this new treatment has not been established in highly vascular surgeries, such as intrathoracic, large multilevel spinal, and head and neck procedures. The new treatment also contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), a type of medicine which:

can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. This risk increases with higher doses and longer use of an NSAID.

cannot be used during heart bypass surgery.

can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and tears.

Dr. Alan Rechter, an orthopedic surgeon, will be available to discuss the newest method of effectively managing postoperative pain. He will explain why this latest development is such an important step in helping patients who are undergoing a variety of procedures.
ZYNRELEF contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), a type of medicine which:
• can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. This risk increases with higher doses and longer use of an NSAID.
• cannot be used during heart bypass surgery.
• can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and tears.

ZYNRELEF should also not be used:
• if you are allergic to any components of ZYNRELEF, aspirin or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen), or have had an asthma attack, hives, or other allergic reaction after taking any of these medicines.
• as a paracervical block, during childbirth.

The most common side effects of ZYNRELEF are constipation, vomiting, and headache.

The medicines in ZYNRELEF (a local anesthetic and an NSAID) can affect the nervous and cardiovascular system; may cause liver or kidney problems; may reduce the effects of some blood pressure medicines; should be avoided if you have severe heart failure; may cause a rare blood disorder, or life-threatening skin or allergic reactions; may harm your unborn baby if received at 20 weeks of pregnancy or later; and may cause low red blood cells (anemia).
Tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions and about all the medicines you take including prescription or over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, or herbal supplements to discuss if ZYNRELEF is right for you

The Hidden Dangers of Winter Sun Exposure

Sun safety habits are important all times of year, and that includes in the winter. Winter activities, such as snow skiing, can result in significant exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun – the leading cause of skin cancers – as UV rays reflect off surfaces, even on cloudy and hazy days. This winter, sun exposure may be a special concern as people spend more time outside, due to COVID-19.

Of particular concern is melanoma, a form of skin cancer. When diagnosed in its early stages, melanoma can be treatable, but it may come back in 20-30% of patients. And in its advanced stages, melanoma can be deadly.

Dr. Sigrun Hallmeyer, a Chicago-based oncologist discusses:
• Why sun safety is important all year round
• Warning signs of skin cancer, including melanoma
• The importance of treatment if someone is diagnosed with melanoma
• Treatment options to help prevent a skin cancer called melanoma from coming back after it has been removed by surgery
