Many people may think that leg swelling, pain, tenderness or redness of the skin are seemingly minor symptoms, but they could point to a potentially serious condition such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE).1 Some PE symptoms may include difficulty breathing, chest pain or discomfort, faster than normal or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, light-headedness or fainting.1,2

www.notimetowait.com/dvt-pe-explained

According to CDC data from 2010, DVT and PE affects as many as 900,000 Americans each year.3 Further, PE could be deadly.1,3 No Time to Wait has launched in part to raise awareness about symptoms of DVT and PE and encourage those experiencing these symptoms to not delay speaking with a healthcare provider. Symptoms can be representative of many conditions, and only a healthcare provider can determine whether these symptoms indicate DVT/PE or another condition.
DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg, thigh, or pelvis and can also occur in the arm.1,4 A PE is a blood clot in the lungs and is the most serious condition that can be caused by DVT.1 This happens when a DVT clot, or part of it, breaks off and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, reducing or cutting off blood supply. 1,4 PE can cause sudden death in about 25% of cases.3

It’s important for those experiencing symptoms that could be due to DVT or PE to talk to a healthcare provider right away by phone, online or in person. Seeking medical attention early may help reduce the chances of DVT or PE becoming more serious. In addition to speaking with a healthcare provider, individuals are encouraged to visit www.NoTimetoWait.com/dvt-pe-explained, where they can find additional information.

Dr. Jenice Baker, Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Department and Attending Physician at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden NJ, will be available to discuss the No Time to Wait campaign and help educate viewers about DVT and PE symptoms and why it’s critical for those experiencing symptoms that could be due to DVT or PE to consult a healthcare provider.

As the pandemic continues, reducing the risk of heart failure hospitalization is more important than ever

It’s always critical for people with heart failure (HF) to take steps to keep healthy and to try to reduce the risk of hospital visits – but now, as these patients face increased health risks and hospitals are overburdened, it’s more important than ever.

HF is a chronic, progressive condition that can change the structure of the heart so it is unable to pump enough blood to the body. Patients with HF are inherently at increased risk of hospitalization for symptoms like shortness of breath or swelling – often in the legs, ankles, feet and/or abdomen. Hospitalizations for HF are a hallmark of disease progression, or worsening of the condition.

Annually, HF accounts for about 1 million hospitalizations. That’s about 2 HF hospitalizations every minute in the U.S.

A visit to hospital for heart failure can average between five and ten days – further, around one in four patients are re-admitted within 30 days of discharge, and one in ten may not survive.

These recurrent experiences can profoundly disrupt the lives of patients and caregivers.

For people living with heart failure, hospitalizations can be a recurring part of life. But finding the right care plan with a health care provider can help people actively manage their condition to reduce their risk of HF hospitalizations.

Kim, for example, is a patient who used to experience frequent HF hospitalizations before changing her treatment regimen. Looking back, this hardworking single mom was referred to a lung specialist by her primary care physician because of a persistent cough that wouldn’t go away. At just 32 years of age, she was shocked to be diagnosed with chronic heart failure, a condition that would lead her to endure frequent heart failure hospitalizations over the next several years.

Fortunately, Kim was able to work with her health care team on a plan, including a healthy lifestyle and treatment regimen that would help manage this chronic condition. In fact, there are steps HF patients can take to help reduce the risk of a HF hospitalization. These can include following a low-salt diet, getting an appropriate amount of physical activity, and maintaining the treatment regimen advised by their health care provider.

Beth Davidson, a heart failure nurse practitioner in Nashville, TN, and President of the American Association of HF Nurses, will be available to discuss the prevalence of HF, a condition affecting over 6 million people in the U.S., and projected to affect approximately 8 million by 2030. She can discuss the seriousness of HF hospitalizations, HF symptoms, treatment and lifestyle tips that may help patients or a loved one manage the condition. Kim will also share her story and how she is successfully managing her HF today.

Don’t Get “Ticked Off”

This Summer

Mosquito & Tick-Borne Illnesses Are on the Rise
The Secret to Beating Their Bites This Summer Might be More Obvious Than You May Think

It’s one of the most annoying sounds that invade our space in the summer…that BZZZZZ from a mosquito. And, where there’s a buzz comes a bite, oftentimes followed by itching and swelling. Unfortunately, mosquitoes aren’t the only summer pest that causes a mean bite. Ticks are also on the prowl for a blood meal – and humans make great hosts.

Although tiny, these biting pests can leave bigger problems than just itchy welts on the skin. They are known to transmit germs and pathogens that cause Lyme disease, West Nile virus, Zika virus and other dangerous diseases. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that disease cases from mosquito, tick and flea bites tripled in the U.S. from 2004 to 2016. This makes prevention of the utmost importance as we head into the summer months.

The good news is your audience doesn’t have to spend the summer months cooped up inside to avoid the wrath of mosquitoes and ticks. There are steps they can take to help keep these pests at bay while enjoying the great outdoors. And, the keys to doing so might be more obvious than people may think.
