Living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can feel like a constant struggle – a life that may be disrupted by debilitating flare-ups and fear of hospitalization.

Impacting more than 14 million adults, COPD is a progressive disease that damages the lungs and airways making it difficult to breathe. And sadly, it’s a leading cause of death in the U.S.

Here’s the frustrating truth: even with daily maintenance inhalers, nearly half of patients still have dangerous symptom flare-ups, also known as exacerbations. These flare-ups aren’t just inconvenient, they can lead to more frequent and severe flare-ups, and a high risk of hospital admission. Just one flare-up increases the likelihood of recurrent flare-ups and related hospital admissions. Why are these flare-ups so persistent?

Evolving science has shown a critical piece of the puzzle: eosinophilic inflammation. This type of inflammation (swelling) in the lungs can be a driver of COPD symptoms, especially for those who experience frequent flare-ups.

What to know: Including a blood eosinophil test in routine screenings, combined with a doctor’s evaluation and diagnostic tools, can help identify if eosinophilic inflammation is making COPD worse. By understanding an underlying cause of flare-ups, a doctor can develop a targeted treatment plan to manage COPD and potentially reduce the frequency of exacerbations.

Alexis Smith, DO, Pulmonary Disease will discuss the challenges facing those living with COPD to help manage COPD and try to break the cycle of flare-ups.

Parkinson’s disease is the most common movement disorder, affecting nearly one million Americans. Symptoms such as tremors, muscle rigidity, and difficulty with movement and balance often worsen over time and can significantly compromise a person’s everyday activities.

Medication can help manage symptoms, but treatment benefits often diminish or become less consistent over time. Patients report alternating states between “ON time,” when the medication is working well, and “OFF time,” when it no longer provides symptom benefit and movement-related symptoms return.

These on-again, off-again changes are disruptive and unpredictable – but a new treatment may help.

The FDA recently approved a treatment that offers a new approach to treating these motor fluctuations – without the need to resort to invasive surgery.

On Wednesday, April 23rd, during Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, we are pleased to offer the opportunity to hear from expert Dr. Stuart Isaacson, Director of the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center. He can discuss the current treatment landscape, the importance of managing OFF episodes and the potential impact of this new treatment.

Schizophrenia is a persistent and often disabling mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. In 2020, there were nearly 2.8 million people in the U.S. impacted by schizophrenia, and it is one of the top causes of disability worldwide.

Schizophrenia is not a one-size-fits-all condition, and people often find themselves in a cycle of discontinuing and switching therapies. Studies have shown that approximately 40% of people with schizophrenia do not respond to therapy, and up to 60% experience a partial or inadequate improvement or intolerable side effects during therapy.

The FDA recently approved a new medication for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, representing the first new class of medicine in more than 30 years. This new treatment option leverages a novel pathway and represents a new mechanistic approach to addressing the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Dr. Gus Alva, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association will be available to discuss the significance of this new treatment for adults living with schizophrenia and their care partners, and its potential to transform the treatment landscape.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 30 YEARS, THE FDA HAS APPROVED THE FIRST DRUG REPRESENTING A NEW CLASS OF MEDICINE FOR THE TREATMENT OF SCHIZOPHRENIA.

ADULTS LIVING WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA HAVE A NEW TREATMENT OPTION TO HELP MANAGE THEIR CONDITION THAT INTRODUCES A FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT APPROACH TO THE TREATMENT OF SCHIZOPHRENIA.

JOINING US NOW WITH MORE INFORMATION IS DR. GUS ALVA, DISTINGUISHED LIFETIME FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRY ASSOCIATION.

BIO

Dr. Gus Alva is the medical director of ATP clinical research (a premiere private clinical research company specializing in neuropsychiatric investigations). He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He is a forensic psychiatric consultant for the Orange County Superior Court and a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Alva received his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG). Residency training was completed at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, where he served as chief resident during his final year of residency.

Dr. Alva has served as a principal investigator for the past 10 years conducting investigations in a myriad of neuropsychiatric conditions: Alzheimer’s and other dementias, depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and psychotic conditions. As a clinician and investigator, Dr Alva’s focus is on the genetics, neuroimaging, and latest treatments available for each aforementioned condition, as well as aspects of ethnicity and their correlation within clinical situations. He has published numerous articles, and presents at both national and international meetings and conferences.

He is the immediate past-president of the Orange County Psychiatric Society. Dr. Alva is also a member of many professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Orange County Medical Association, the California Psychiatric Association, the American Board of Forensic Medicine, the American College of Forensic Examiners, the California Hispanic American Medical Association and the International Congress of Geriatric Psychopharmacology.

Illuminating A Taboo Cancer On the Rise, with a Primary Risk Factor That’s More Common Than You THINK

THIS SERIOUS, RARE, AND MISUNDERSTOOD CANCER HAS A PRIMARY RISK FACTOR THAT IS MORE PREVALENT THAN YOU MIGHT THINK. HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS OR HPV—A COMMON VIRUS TRANSMITTED BY SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT—IS THE NUMBER ONE RISK FACTOR FOR ANAL CANCER.1,2

MARCH IS ANAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. JOINING US TO SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TALKING OPENLY ABOUT THE RISK FACTORS AND SYMPTOMS OF THIS CANCER THAT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO TALK ABOUT ARE ANAL CANCER SPECIALIST, DR. PAUL ROMESSER [ROME-EH-SIR], AND LILLIAN KREPPEL [LILL-EE-IN KREH-PELL], ANAL CANCER SURVIVOR AND CO-FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE HPV CANCERS ALLIANCE.

BIO- Paul Romesser, MD

Colorectal and Anal Cancer Specialist

Dr. Paul Romesser is a board-certified radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of colorectal and anal cancer. He is also actively involved in anal cancer clinical trials. Dr. Romesser is passionate about helping patients navigate the complexities of cancer care and create personalized treatment plans tailored to their needs.

BIO-Lillian Kreppel

Co-Founder and Executive Director of HPV Cancers Alliance

Lillian is an anal cancer “thriver,” patient advocate and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of HPV Cancers Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of human papilloma virus (HPV) and the cancers it can cause. She was diagnosed with HPV-related anal cancer in 2017 and has been a passionate activist and changemaker for the HPV and anal cancer community ever since.

In her own words, “No one should die from HPV – education and self-advocacy can save your life. HPV desperately needs a voice. I AM THAT VOICE!”

The bottom line: Get informed and speak up about risk factors, symptoms, and better care at all stages

Anal cancer can go undetected as it shares many of the same symptoms as common, non-cancer conditions.1 Further, people experiencing symptoms can be embarrassed to discuss them with their doctor and unaware of the key risk factors for anal cancer, which may lead to a delayed diagnosis. Open and honest communication is critical with this cancer, as early diagnosis may help improve outcomes.2

The #1 risk factor for anal cancer is human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus transmitted by skin-to-skin contact.2,3 Other key facts about HPV include:

Nearly all sexually active people will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.4
A healthy immune system will rid most HPV infections within two years before they cause precancer cell changes.4
Approximately 90% of anal cancers are associated with HPV infection.5
While anal cancer is rare, its incidence is on the rise.6
Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCAC) is the most common type of anal cancer, accounting for about 90% of all anal cancers.7

On Wednesday, March 19, in recognition of Anal Cancer Awareness Month, Lillian Kreppel, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the HPV Cancers Alliance (hpvca.org), and colorectal and anal cancer specialist, Dr. Paul Romesser, is going to discuss their personal and expert perspectives about the condition and the importance of open conversations with healthcare providers at all stages of the journey.

Together, Lillian and Dr. Romesser aim to raise national awareness of anal cancer and its connection to HPV, as well as inspire more open and comfortable communication and better care at all stages. No one is alone in this journey.

A Chronic Disease of the Central Nervous System
March is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month, a key moment in time to raise awareness of the disease, educate the public and support those living with MS by sharing their stories.
MS is a chronic and disabling disease of the central nervous system (CNS)1 impacting nearly one million people in the U.S., with varying forms including primary progressive, secondary progressive and relapsing-remitting MS, among others. The CNS includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves and controls everything we do. MS causes progressive and irreparable damage to the CNS, disrupting the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.
A person’s experience with MS can change from day to day and year to year. MS can also affect different areas of the body as symptoms depend on where damage is occurring at any specific time.2 Specific symptoms may include3:
· Fatigue
· Difficulty walking
· Vision difficulties
· Memory difficulties
· Numbness
· Pain
· Tingling, and many more unseen symptoms

Over 60 million Americans, about one-fifth of the U.S. population, live in areas where access to healthcare, including IV administration, is often limited. This particularly poses challenges for people with chronic diseases like MS.
Roger was diagnosed with MS when he was 36, and experienced symptoms including migraines, vision loss and leg pain.
However, he has been able to manage his MS thanks in part to a newly approved treatment by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The treatment is the first and only twice-a-year, 10-minute subcutaneous injection for certain types of MS and provides a new and much needed option for people living with the disease, particularly those who need flexibility in the route of administration or treatment time.
Dr. Robert Shin, Director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Clinical Neuroimmunology Division at UVA Health, is available to discuss the importance of this treatment for MS and will explain how it provides additional choice and flexibility for both healthcare providers and people living with the disease. Roger will also be joining Dr. Shin to talk about his experience with MS and how this treatment option has helped him manage his disease.

Liver cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.1,2 Hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, is the most common type of liver cancer, yet more than half of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease often when symptoms first begin to appear.3,4 Historically, the prognosis for advanced HCC has been poor, with only 7% of patients surviving up to five years after diagnosis.4

http://imfinzi.com/

But today, there is reason for optimism. Advances in research and medical innovation are signaling a shift in patient expectations, offering hope for more time for patients navigating their unresectable HCC or uHCC diagnosis. Here to explain the progress being made in the treatment landscape is Dr Shroff [shrawf] with the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

BIO:
Rachna T. Shroff, MD, MS, FASCO, is associate director of Clinical Investigations and co-leader of the Gastrointestinal Clinical Research Team at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). She also is a professor with tenure in the Department of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and Medical Director for the Oncology Service Line. Dr. Shroff also served as Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research for the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson; 2021 – 2024. She came to UACC from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where she was on faculty from 2010-18 after completing her medical oncology fellowship there.
IT’S ESTIMATED THAT BETWEEN 1 IN 200 AND 1 IN 500 PEOPLE IN THE U.S. ARE AFFECTED BY AN OFTEN UNDERDIAGNOSED HEART CONDITION – HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY (HAI-PR-TROW-FUHK KAAR-DEE-OW-MAI-AA-PUH-THEE) OR H-C-M. WHEN H-C-M CAUSES THE HEART MUSCLE TO GET SO THICK THAT IT BLOCKS OR REDUCES BLOOD FLOW TO THE REST OF THE BODY, IT IS CALLED OBSTRUCTIVE H-C-M.

OBSTRUCTIVE H-C-M SYMPTOMS ARE ALSO COMMON SYMPTOMS OF OTHER DISEASES, WHICH MAKES THE DISEASE HARD TO DIAGNOSE.

JOINING US NOW IS SYMPTOMTIC OBSTRUCTIVE HCM PATIENT STEPHANIE ALONG WITH BOARD CERTIFIED CARDIOLOGIST, DR. WILLIAM CROWDER, TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THIS CONDITION IN HONOR OF HEART MONTH IN FEBRUARY.

INDICATION

CAMZYOS® (mavacamten) is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with symptomatic obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). CAMZYOS may improve your symptoms and your ability to be active. It is not known if CAMZYOS is safe and effective in children.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

CAMZYOS (mavacamten) may cause serious side effects, including:

Heart failure, a condition where the heart cannot pump with enough force. Heart failure is a serious condition that can lead to death. You must have echocardiograms before you take your first dose and during your treatment with CAMZYOS to help your healthcare provider understand how your heart is responding to CAMZYOS. People who develop a serious infection or irregular heartbeat have a greater risk of heart failure during treatment with CAMZYOS. Tell your healthcare provider or get medical help right away if you develop new or worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, swelling in your legs, a racing sensation in your heart (palpitations), or rapid weight gain.

The risk of heart failure is also increased when CAMZYOS is taken with certain other medications. Tell your healthcare provider about the medicines you take, both prescribed and obtained over-the-counter, before and during treatment with CAMZYOS.

Because of the serious risk of heart failure, CAMZYOS is only available through a restricted program called the CAMZYOS Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Program.

• Before you take CAMZYOS, you must enroll in the CAMZYOS REMS Program. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to enroll in the CAMZYOS REMS Program. You will be given information about the program when you enroll.

• Before you take CAMZYOS, your healthcare provider and pharmacist will make sure you understand how to

take CAMZYOS safely, which will include returning for echocardiograms when advised by your healthcare provider.

• CAMZYOS can only be dispensed by a certified pharmacy that participates in the CAMZYOS REMS

Testing blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is an essential part of your diabetes care plan.

Depending on your current condition, you may need to visit your doctor several times a year for formal testing, according to the American Diabetes Association. You may also need to reach out to your doctor for preventive testing, such as cholesterol checks and eye exams.

While staying in touch with your doctor is important for staying on top of your treatment plan, you can and should test your blood sugar on your own as long as your healthcare team advises you to.

Self-monitoring your blood glucose may be vital to your treatment. Testing your own levels allows you to learn how to manage your blood sugar regardless of the time of day or where you are.

Learn how these tests work and talk with your doctor about the benefits of self-monitoring.

Who should use diabetes home tests?

Your doctor will help you decide if you need to test your blood sugar at home. If you do, they’ll work out how often you should test and at what times of the day. They’ll also tell you what your blood sugar targets are.

You may consider diabetes home tests if you have:

type 1 diabetes

type 2 diabetes

prediabetes

By keeping track of blood glucose, you can discover problems in your current diabetes care.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source, typical blood glucose ranges between 70 to 99 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) while fasting and 140 mg/dL or below after eating.

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is below 70 mg/dL, and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is well above 140 mg/dL.

By maintaining glucose at an average range, you may help prevent diabetes complications. According to the CDCTrusted Source, these include:

A complex and chronic inflammatory disease, psoriasis impacts approximately 8 million Americans and 125 million people worldwide. Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis — accounting for about 80% to 90% of cases — and is characterized by raised patches of skin with silvery-white or gray scale that can be itchy, painful and disfiguring.

For the millions of people living with psoriasis, like Gloria, the impact on their daily lives extends far beyond the physical symptoms. Among some of the many grievances Gloria can share about her last 10 years living with the condition are:

Strangers commenting on her skin when she’s out in public

Leaving bits of skin on furniture — and even needing to vacuum her bedsheets

Wearing her hair down during the unbearably hot Texas summer to avoid showing affected areas on the back of her neck

Times when people haven’t wanted to touch her skin, such as a cashier not wanting to take a $20 bill from her hands, during a flare-up

Although Gloria tried a number of treatments to help improve her psoriasis, many of these treatments didn’t give her the results she was looking for — as is often the case among psoriasis patients.

Fortunately, there’s hope. A new, innovative treatment in plaque psoriasis is getting high praise from people like Gloria, as well as the medical community. Following more than 25 years of minimal innovation in the topical psoriasis treatment space, the FDA recently approved a steroid-free, prescription cream for plaque psoriasis in adults — the first in its class in the U.S.

Linda Stein-Gold, MD, Director of Dermatology Clinical Research at Henry Ford Health System and Gloria as they discuss the significant impact plaque psoriasis may have on a person’s life and what this new treatment may mean for those who are suffering with plaque psoriasis as well.
