New wireless, tablet-ready robot-based learning system for elementary science curriculum teaches science and coding in a hands-on way

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS:
•	LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 is a hands-on, elementary science solution that develops science practices in the classroom through a robot-based learning system.
•	Correlated to standards-based projects, the solution engages and motivates students to solve real-world science problems by working with engineering, technology and coding through the LEGO® brick,
classroom-friendly software and 40+ hours of hands-on projects.
•	LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 strengthens students’ understanding and develops competencies across key science topics including physical sciences, life sciences, earth and space sciences and engineering.

CES – LAS VEGAS – NEWS RELEASE – January 5, 2016 – Today, LEGO® Education announced LEGO Education WeDo 2.0, a hands-on science solution designed for elementary classrooms using a robot-based learning system. The unique solution combines the LEGO® brick, classroom-friendly software and engaging, standards-based projects to teach elementary students essential science practices and skills . With WeDo 2.0, students explore, create and share their scientific discoveries as they build, program and modify projects. Through a series of collaborative challenges, they deeply engage with science, engineering, technology, and coding, sparking a love for experimentation and investigation. Teachers receive support through training, curriculum and built -in assessment. The result – a resource that builds students’ confidence to ask questions, define problems, and design their own solutions by putting scientific discovery in their hands.

Featuring curriculum that contains 40+ hours of lessons and activities built on key science standards for 2nd-4th grades, WeDo 2.0 enables students to engage with the science practices and engineering habits of mind by testing multiple designs through eight guided and eight open-ended projects. For example, in the “Drop and Rescue” project, students are challenged to design a device to reduce the impacts on humans, animals and the environment after an area has been damaged by a weather-related hazard. Students can prototype solutions to a challenge where there is no single right answer helping teach creativity and problem-solving skills. This also enables educators to tailor lessons to meet all students’ needs, no matter their abilities.

“Teachers know that science and technology skills are crucial for today’s elementary school students, but providing engaging projects that mean something in the real world is a challenge,” said Jeffrey Marlow, a Geobiologist at Harvard University and founder of The Mars Academy education and development program. “WeDo 2.0 offers projects that let students discover the surface of Mars with a model rover, or explore the Amazon rainforest thro ugh frog metamorphosis. These science lessons do more than just teach students facts to memorize – they represent an immersive experience that instills a deeper understanding of the scientific method and evidence -based reasoning. Not only are these skills central to science- and technology-based fields but providing a platform for our students to spark that one idea that could change the world is something they can build on for the rest of their lives.”

The wireless platform includes a Bluetooth low-energy Smarthub element; an electronic based building brick that is part of the LEGO Power Functions (LPF); a new technology platform for LEGO Education; one motor; one tilt and one motion sensor. The WeDo 2.0 Core software is an essential and easy-to-use component that is colorful, age- appropriate and has a drag-n-drop interface that is graphical in nature. It also contains a documentation tool that enables students to document their problem solving process and provides an assessment opportunity for teachers.

LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 is available today on iPad, Android, PC, and Macs. Chrome Book support will be available in the second half of 2016. A Scratch interface for WeDo 2.0 (both web-based and stand-alone) will be available for Macs in February 2016 and for PC/Windows in June 2016. For information on how to implement

IBM Digital Benchmark Offers Real-Time Insight on Online Shopping Trends
Kicking off Thanksgiving Day and extending through Cyber Monday, IBM will provide the latest online, mobile and social sales trends as they happen
Guest: Jay Henderson, Strategy Director, IBM Smarter Commerce
Background:
While consumers are making their holiday gift lists for friends and family, retailers will be hustling to get in-store and online sites ready for the big holiday rush. Their challenge? It’s not a matter of when or what consumers will buy, but how they will buy. Will mobile shoppers continue to take the lead? Will they shop via web, smartphone or tablet? Will they expand their use of social channels? And is this the year that Thanksgiving overtakes Black Friday as the official kick-off to the holiday shopping season?
These are the questions IBM will help answer in real-time through the IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark, which analyzes online shopping data ahead of Thanksgiving Day through Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and into the holiday season. The IBM Benchmark is a cloud-based digital analytics platform that tracks millions of e-commerce transactions a day, analyzing terabytes of raw data from approximately 800 participating U.S. retail web sites. The Benchmark is the only cloud-based, real-time resource for retailers and marketers that need to uncover shopping trends across a variety of channels including social media, mobile devices, and other online sources where consumers interact with their brands.
The Benchmark analyzes the following metrics:
– Overall online sales — including overall sales for an given moment as well as average order value, items per order and the time shopping peaked
– Overall sales for vertical industries — including department stores, apparel, and home goods
– Mobile traffic — including overall mobile commerce sales, traffic by device, tablet traffic by device, and phone vs. tablet statistics
– Social traffic –including information on online sales generated by shoppers referred from Social Networks, i.e. Facebook vs. Pinterest
– Savviest Cities for Online Shoppers — including the top cities for online sales per capita
The Benchmark consists of more than 800 participating U.S. retail websites, including 50 percent of the Internet Retailer Top 100 and 20 percent of the Internet Retailer 500. All brand data is anonymous. In 2012, the Benchmark garnered more than 15,000 media hits alone, with key outlets like the Associated Press,Reuters, New York Times, CNN, Forbes, Fox Business, USA Today, and more reporting on the data.

that projects a multi-dimensional sound platform. “Korus is designed to blend a superior wireless audio signal with a state-of-the-art acoustic architecture, for a TRUE high fidelity, premium audio experience that is head and shoulders above speaker systems using other wireless protocols,” said Rob Halligan, VP of Group Marketing and Strategy for the Technology Solutions Group of Nortek, Inc. “The highly disruptive nature of the Korus premium wireless speaker system comes from an unparalleled ease–of-use, eliminating the need for tedious and complicated pairing or network password logins. Korus delivers a much more stable and reliable wireless audio connection for even a long distance signal without pops or drops and signal failures common with other wireless protocols, and the flexibility to stream audio to up to 4 speakers either simultaneously or from separate streaming devices.” Halligan continued, “These attributes, coupled with the fact that Korus works with music plus movies and games, which are now being played wirelessly through the whole KORUS V600/V400 Premium Wireless Speaker System home, means Korus clearly changes the landscape — and raises the bar — for what is considered a modern wireless speaker system.”
Leading technology analyst Patrick Moorhead, of Moor Insights & Strategy, said, “With SKAA, the Korus premium wireless speaker system provides synchronized, reliable and exceptional sound quality for the first time in a portable, wireless speaker system. It is true consumer electronics innovation that has the potential to surpass not only BlueTooth but also proprietary systems such as Sonos and Airplay. And, it far surpasses WiFi because it is portable and can work instantaneously with most any mobile device.”
Product Review and Availability
With Korus you can hear all your favorite music, videos and games right from your device on up to four speakers throughout your home and patio, or in any location up to 65 feet or more. Korus requires no wireless network, and is compatible with all of your favorite applications used every day, such as Netflix®, Pandora®, YouTube®, Hulu®, and games like Gameloft’s® Iron Man 3 – The Official Game® or Battery Acid Games’® Highway Rider®, plus music using iTunes®, Pandora®, or any other music player or service. Initial rollout of Korus will be compatible with iOS® devices (iPad®, iPhone®, iPod®), Macintosh®, and Windows 8® laptops, PCs, and tablets. The speakers are controlled with mobile friendly baton wireless audio transmitters that
plug into your mobile device or computer. An Android®-compatible Baton audio transmitter is expected to be released in 2014.
Korus’ premium technology is based on SKAA, an improved wireless audio protocol that offers consistent and reliable signal connections without latency issues. Korus speakers with SKAA transmit superior sound quality up to 480Kbps (compared to 201Kbps as is typical for Bluetooth enabled devices). SKAA is transmitted on the 2.4GHZ ISM radio band and uses a patented Walking Frequency Diversity protocol that effectively detects conflicts and “hops” out of the way, preventing drops and pops. SKAA has a latency (lag time from a source device) of only 40ms (milliseconds) as opposed to 120ms typical for Bluetooth. Further information is available here: Moorhead’s Research Note On SKAA Wireless Protocol
Korus combines the superior signal capabilities of SKAA with its unique acoustic architecture and product design. Drawing on the composite audio heritage of Core Brands— a pioneering developer of many audio firsts— Korus is designed, with a unique and innovative acoustic signature called LiveStage that projects a multi-dimensional sound platform with the vocals up front and other instruments like guitars and drums placed behind to create a subtle perceived distance between musical elements. Such depth and breadth offers a richer, more dynamic audio experience that feels immersive and expansive, as if at a live performance. The speaker’s a curved front panel and its beveled side angles enhance the LiveStage affect, creating a fuller, whole room sound. The gentle curves, polished surfaces and brushed aluminum buttons make Korus look as great as it sounds.
