Since 1918, the U.S. Warrant Officer has stood alongside our most successful military leaders as trusted advisors and mentors. As keepers of the Army’s technical systems, the Warrant Officer role has evolved from humble beginnings as mine planters in the Army Coast Artillery Corps of World War I to serving in more than 40 unique occupation specialties. These include ground forces, aviation, intelligence, engineering, and more. This July, the Warrant Officer cohort is celebrating its 106th anniversary.

Of all the positions of authority and responsibility, that of Command Chief Warrant Officer is probably the least known. However, this is a critical position within all branches of the military —especially within the Army Reserve — because the Warrant Officer is a steady presence with expert knowledge that helps the total Army achieve its mission. Warrant Officers are innovative integrators of emerging technologies, dynamic teachers, confident warfighters, and developers of specialized teams of Soldiers.

Although they make up less than three percent of total Army strength, Warrant Officers are responsible for training Soldiers, organizing and advising on missions, and advancing within their career specialties. The Warrant Officer cohort is comprised of more than 26,000 men and women of the active Army and Reserve components.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 LaShon White, Command Chief Warrant Officer of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, as he discusses the invaluable role Warrant Officers fulfill. CW5 White first enlisted in the Army in 1986 and this year became the first Black Command Chief Warrant Officer of the Army Reserve.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITIONS IN THE U-S ARMY RESERVE MAY POSSIBLY BE ONE THAT MANY CIVILIANS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF.

SINCE 1918, WARRANT OFFICERS HAVE SERVED AS TRUSTED ADVISERS AND MENTORS WHO HELP SOLVE THE ARMY’S MOST COMPLEX CHALLENGES.

HERE NOW TO EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ROLE, IS CHIEF-WARRANT-OFFICER-5, LASHON (LA-SHAWN) WHITE, COMMAND CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER OF THE U-S ARMY RESERVE COMMAND.

Ma*Jid is a contemporary jazz ensemble that’s comprised of a rhythm section,
strings and brass. The band has been described by legendary musician Wynton
Marsalis as having “a unique blend of improvisation, groove and technical
sophistication.”
Ma*Jid possesses all of the significant parts of the symphony
orchestra, thus allowing the music to move freely in and out of the various
musical influences.
The Band members, (Majid Khaliq/ bandleader/ Violin, Conun Pappas/
Keyboards, Norman Paul Edwards Jr./ Drums and Alex “Busby” Smith/ Bass),
are among the most active young talent on the N.Y. jazz scene today. As a
band, the Ma*Jid has been together for about 12 years.
Since their first performance, it has been the mission of Ma*Jid to provide
diverse musical presentations. These presentations showcase the music of its resident
composer Majid Khaliq while highlighting contemporary composers at the same time.
Ma*Jid has been forward looking in programming and in performance. The band
consistently delivers a mix of original, soul and hip-hop jazz compositions in every
power packed performance.
Each band member has been described as being deeply interested in presenting
music with a close ensemble interplay and depth in harmonic composition. Some of
their key projects include recordings such as the band’s debut record named “The
Basilisk”, the Blues with Strings Project with Kammermusik of Long Island, mixtapes
“Sfumato Symphony Vl 1&2”, Four Emotions of an African in America Project featuring
choreography by Gelan Lambert and the greatly anticipated 2nd studio album entitled
“SOUND OF A FLOWER” 2018.
With each performance, Ma*Jid is pleased to invite listeners to enjoy the essence
of creatively composed, soul moving, authentic jazz music.

where he holds the Zandman Professorship in International Management and teaches in its flagship Advanced Management Program and many other courses for executives, MBAs, and undergraduates. An expert on global market trends, he is a sought-after speaker and consultant. He combines his training as a sociologist at Yale and as a business economist in his native Spain to methodically identify and quantify the most promising opportunities at the intersection of demographic, economic and technological developments. His online classes on Coursera and edXhave attracted over 100,000 participants from around the world. He has won multiple teaching awards at Wharton, where his presentation on global market trends has become a permanent feature of over fifty executive education programs annually.

His research, teaching, and speaking incorporates both numerical assessments of trends and illuminating examples from business, politics, and everyday life. He shows in accessible terms that one can accurately forecast trends by systematically following the babies and following the money into the future. His research has earned him many distinctions, including Fulgright, Rockefeller and Guggenheim fellowships, a membership in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and prizes from the Academy of Management, the American Sociological Association, the Social Science History Association, and the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. He is an elected member of the Sociological Research Association and the MacroOrganizational Behavior Society.

My family and I are touched by the decision to create the Eric Vero Technical Award in Eric’s honor. This year’s nominee was Ed Kristol, a volunteer who worked with Eric almost from the start of SeniorNet and contributed many hours of his time and energy both in the lab and at the nationalGrid hub. Together they worked with a team of dedicated individuals starting as early as 2001 until the end of the project in 2010. To paraphrase Ed Kristol, here is his response to receiving the award:

“Slava: I really do appreciate the honor. I also appreciate the years Eric and I and the others spent at KeySpan. I learned so much from Eric and the other volunteers that I still use. Again, thank you for the recommendation, this is an honor.”

Please join us in congratulating Ed in receiving this award. We hope to continue this tradition for many years to come. For some of you that attended the 2013 annual meeting, you should know that SeniorNet has made plans for the year 2061 when the next generation will join SeniorNet.

His musical journey.

For some it begins early in life and takes years or what seems like a lifetime to surge. John Seeger was definitely born a musician. Learning, practicing and mastering guitar was as much an everyday occupation to him as speaking Japanese and Spanish fluently, obtaining his black belt in karate, creating and building his successful NYC-based construction company, raising his 19 year old daughter and tending to his home and family. It may have seemed at times, even to John, that music was just another one of his passions and thirsts. Except that this one was impossible to quench.

John sets the bar high in every aspect of his life, music is no exception. Over 15 songs on his roster to date, all written over the past year, John’s songs are like paintings, a depiction of life’s tales in each one. The mixture of his musical style is as diverse as the man. Sometimes bluesy with a hint of funk, sometimes pop or folk rock, always about a love lost or soon to be found, relationships and friends, but mainly about a man’s journey to find and keep his heart’s desire. Not as easy as it sounds…The range of John’s technical guitar qualities knows no boundaries : classical, Spanish, electric, acoustic, blues : you name it, John plays it.

Who then will find it hard to understand how sometimes a passion can take decades to finally find its form? That life’s journey is a mysterious one and oddly, not as common as one may think?

Who says a songwriter has to be between 18 and 25 to have something to offer to the world in terms of musicality, harmony, lyrics or vocals ? Who doesn’t know someone strikingly talented in their mid 50s, a professional in his or her own right with years of life’s accumulated experiences, and with a story to tell.

Inspired by a multitude of other bands since his teens, of course, by infinitely talented musicians over the years, indeed, by his own journey and love of the art of music, John Seeger has come to realize that it had to be done. He had to let it go, let it happen and see where it will take him. Just as obvious as ink on a blank piece of paper, John’s songwriting has been crafted into the pieces of life, which define him.

His live performances in NYC have recently given him proof (that he has been striving for) that there is an ever-growing receptive audience out there, loving his music. Just as much as he is loving his and his band,Wa2C’s, performances. A new chapter in his life begins.
