ALBANY — New York’s population exodus continued to top national charts for a third consecutive year with a loss of more than 101,000 residents from the Empire State, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Texas and Florida continued to see the country’s highest population increases, adding more than 473,000 and 365,000 residents, respectively, followed by North Carolina and Georgia, which each added more than 100,000 residents during the one-year period.

Regionally, the South continues to lead the United States in population growth and has remained the most populous region, while the Northeast led the nation in decline and remains the least populous. Among states in the Northeast region, only New York and Pennsylvania saw declining populations this year.

The census report said that the country is returning to pre-pandemic levels, experiencing an increase of 1.6 million people and seeing more states with growing populations this year than since the start of the pandemic.

New York continues to be the fourth-most populous state, trailing California, Texas and Florida.

New York’s population exodus continues

More states gained than lost population during the 12-month period ending July 1. But New York logged the largest decline in the nation, losing more than 100,000 residents.

U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, who represents the North Country and parts of the Capital Region, blamed the decline on “the consequences of far left Democrat leadership.” Stefanik, chair of the House Republican Conference, said lawmakers in Albany have an “extremist agenda.”

“Far left Kathy Hochul and Albany Democrats have made New York so unlivable that our state leads the nation in population loss with more than 102,000 residents leaving in one year alone,” Stefanik said in a statement. “With record crime and cost of living far beyond the national average, New York’s mass exodus is far from over.”

The Empire State also has topped states in declining populations since the pandemic, losing more than 631,000 residents between April 2020 and July, representing 3.1 percent of the state’s population.

In the Capital Region, residents left in higher numbers than they came in between 2020 and 2021, except for Saratoga County, which added 2,000 residents.

During that same time period, the Hudson Valley gained residents, while New York City and nearby counties lost population.

The following year, Albany and New Rochelle were the only cities among New York’s 12 most populous that added residents. In the year ending July 1, 2022, Albany’s addition of 91 residents boosted the population to 100,826. New Rochelle’s growth was more robust, with an increase of 899 people to 82,288 during that period.

New York, which the census report estimated to have just over 20.2 million residents in April 2020, had fallen to less than 19.6 million residents in July.

The state’s public school population has also seen a steep, nation-leading decline since the pandemic, according to data collected by the Associated Press.

The state experienced a 6 percent decline in public school enrollment — a reduction of about 157,000 students — from the 2019-20 to 2022-23 school years, the largest percent decrease of any state that has reported the data. (Tennessee has not yet released recent enrollment figures.)

Every county in New York experienced an enrollment drop in that time period with the most pronounced decreases in New York City, as well as Greene, Schuyler, Ulster and Columbia counties, state data shows.

The number of students attending public school in the state is down 10 percent from a decade ago and is at its lowest level since the mid-1950s, according to Ken Girardin, director of research at the Empire Center, a non-profit think tank in Albany.

The Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy released a report Thursday saying about 150,000 immigrants have arrived in New York between Oct. 1, 2022, and Aug. 1, including 30,000 children, a third of whom are under age 5.

Then in 1960, Bobby & Brenda welcomed Robbie to the family! This also marked what would become the next phase of remarkable growth for Bear Creek! As the years passed and the Smokehouse expanded into larger facilities, Robbie grew up receiving a first hand knowledge of the business and he began to form his ideas of what direction to take it!

In 1990 Hunter was welcomed into the Bear Creek Family! As he grew up he gained a first hand education in Smokehouse 101!

Even though Bear Creek had a significant wholesale business in place, Robbie yearned to take it to the next level. As we are approaching Pain Awareness Month in September, it is a time to highlight the issues of postoperative pain and postoperative pain management in the United States. Recent data shows that 67% of patients filled an opioid prescription between 30 days before through 14 days after surgery. In the past, postoperative pain management has been a one-size-fits all approach and there is an urgent need for it to be more individualized.
While patients routinely are searching for a safe and effective way to manage the pain they experience following surgery, many tell doctors they want to avoid the adverse effects that are commonly experienced by those receiving opioids to reduce their pain. The most common adverse effects are dizziness, nausea and constipation. But even more than that, patients want to avoid any risk of misuse and addiction.
Now there’s been a new development; what some surgeons are calling a “game-changer” for postoperative pain. The FDA recently approved a treatment that works on both inflammation and pain at the surgical site for up to 3 days for those who undergo bunion surgery, hernia repair and total knee replacement surgeries. Clinical trials have shown that this new treatment reduces the need for and can eliminate in many patients, potentially addictive opioids. The safety and efficacy of this new treatment has not been established in highly vascular surgeries, such as intrathoracic, large multilevel spinal, and head and neck procedures. The new treatment also contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), a type of medicine which:

can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. This risk increases with higher doses and longer use of an NSAID.

cannot be used during heart bypass surgery.

can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and tears.

Dr. Alan Rechter, an orthopedic surgeon, will be available to discuss the newest method of effectively managing postoperative pain. He will explain why this latest development is such an important step in helping patients who are undergoing a variety of procedures.

Important advancement in treatment for patients living with Follicular Lymphoma (FL)

BACKGROUND:
Cancer is a disease that almost everyone will confront at some point in their lives, either personally or through a loved one. As we continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to ensure patients receive proper care when managing a chronic cancer, like follicular lymphoma (FL).1

FL is a slow-growing and incurable blood cancer that starts in the lymphatic system, which is a system of lymph nodes found throughout the body, including the neck, underarms, chest, abdomen and groin/pelvis.1 While FL can occur at any age, it is most frequently diagnosed among people aged 55-64, with a median age of 63.2 Of the estimated 74,000 individuals diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the United States each year,3 FL accounts for approximately 20% of all cases, or about 14,800 individuals.1

It’s important for patients and doctors to remember that cancer care should not be put by the wayside due to COVID-19. By having routine and open conversations with healthcare providers via telemedicine and select in-person visits, patients can help to support their own improved health outcomes. There is also new hope as treatment advances give patients with FL, and the doctors who treat them, new, convenient options to help fight this debilitating cancer.

With the FDA’s recent accelerated approval of TAZVERIK® (tazemetostat) for the treatment of adults with relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma who have received at least 2 prior systemic therapies, FL patients have a new oral treatment option to discuss with their physicians. Warnings and Precautions

• Secondary Malignancies

The risk of developing secondary malignancies is increased following treatment with TAZVERIK. Across clinical trials of 729 adults who received TAZVERIK 800 mg twice daily, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML) occurred in 0.7% of patients. One pediatric patient developed T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL). Monitor patients long-term for the development of secondary malignancies.

• Embryo-Fetal Toxicity

Based on findings from animal studies and its mechanism of action, TAZVERIK can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. There are no available data on TAZVERIK use in pregnant women to inform the drug-associated risk. Administration of tazemetostat to pregnant rats and rabbits during organogenesis resulted in dose-dependent increases in skeletal developmental abnormalities in both species beginning at maternal exposures approximately 1.5 times the adult human exposure (area under the plasma concentration time curve [AUC0-45h]) at the 800 mg twice daily dose.

Advise pregnant women of the potential risk to a fetus. Advise females of reproductive potential to use effective contraception during treatment with TAZVERIK and for 6 months after the final dose. Advise males with female partners of reproductive potential to use effective contraception during treatment with TAZVERIK and for 3 months after the final dose.

Adverse Reactions

In 99 clinical study patients with relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma receiving TAZVERIK 800 mg twice daily: Serious adverse reactions occurred in 30% of patients who received TAZVERIK. Serious adverse reactions occurring in ≥2% were general physical health deterioration, abdominal pain, pneumonia, sepsis, and anemia. The most common (≥20%) adverse reactions were fatigue (36%), upper respiratory tract infection (30%), musculoskeletal pain (22%), nausea (24%), and abdominal pain (20%).

Drug Interactions

Avoid coadministration of strong or moderate CYP3A inhibitors with TAZVERIK. If coadministration of moderate CYP3A inhibitors cannot be avoided, reduce TAZVERIK dose.

Avoid coadministration of moderate and strong CYP3A inducers with TAZVERIK, which may decrease the efficacy of TAZVERIK.

Coadministration of TAZVERIK with CYP3A substrates, including hormonal contraceptives, can result in decreased concentrations and reduced efficacy of CYP3A substrates.

Lactation

Because of the potential risk for serious adverse reactions from TAZVERIK in the breastfed child, advise women not to breastfeed during treatment with TAZVERIK and for one week after the final dose.
