About the Book:

This is a practical and useful book that is unified to combine a regular textbook containing conversation/vocabulary/phases with four language tools such as writing/reading/speaking/listening.

This textbook provides English translations for Chinese language in writing/reading/speaking and listening. The chapters of the book help American-speaking individuals quickly translate English words and phrases into Chinese. Including many situations that occur in daily life; such as asking for help, finding a doctor, identifying food allergies, restaurant dining, shopping, greetings, and etc. can be found in the chapters. Best of all, you can gain confidence in communicating in the 21st century with Chinese-speaking individuals.

Students found this textbook useful during interactions with others because of the simplicity of the chapters. The book is also convenient to carry because it’s soft cover.

As the author, I would like to reiterate that my purpose in writing each chapter of this resourceful book is similar to the trunk of a big tree that establishes and prepares students for a solid and stable language foundation in Chinese. I am hopeful that you too, find the text, conversations, vocabulary, and phrases practical and useful in assisting your ability to listen, speak, read, write, and learn Chinese.

Jasmine Tang is currently a professor at SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo, NY and MCC (Monroe Community College) in Rochester, NY where she enjoys teaching the Chinese language to students and has written this book to enhance the learning experience for anyone that seeks to travel to China or learn the Chinese language.

Hi Fred, this is Alan next door. I have a confession to make. I’ve felt guilty these past few months and have been intending to tell you to your face, but I am at least now telling you in text as I longer go on without you knowing.

The truth is I have been sharing your wife, day and night when you’re not around. In fact, probably more than you.
I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies and forgive me. Please suggest a fee for usage, and I’ll pay you whatever you think might be just compensation.

Regards, Alan.

THE RESPONSE

Fred, feeling insulted and betrayed, grabbed his gun, and shot his neighbor dead.
He returned home where he poured himself a stiff drink and sat down on the sofa.
He took out his phone where he saw he had a second message from his neighbor.

THE SECOND MESSAGE

Hi Fred,

This is Alan next door again. Sorry about the typo on my last text.
I expect you figured it out anyway, and that you noticed that darned Auto-Correct changed “wi-fi” to “wife” Technology hey?

Regards, Alan

At only 16 years old, a junior, in high school, it was on December 11, 2008 when Amanda Suzanne Brownell tried to take her life in a bathroom at Del Mar High School in San Jose, California. This was a result of the bullying, sexual bullying, and cyber bullying she endured through MySpace, Facebook, AIM, and the 3500 text MESSAGES she received the month before her suicide attempt. Amanda, suffered severe brain damage, unable to speak or care for herself.

After almost 4 and 1/2 years Amanda decided that her job here was done. She was hospitalized with pneumonia and seizures on March 13, 2013, while her parents were in Hawaii on vacation. On March 23, Amanda did not want to be poked and squeezed anymore. She was done and did not want any type of medicine or food. There was a family meeting on March 24 and Amanda’s dad Jim Brownell SIGNED the POST form to not recessitate or intibate. She returned to her LSA – Baywood HOME (since June 2010) on 3/27/13. Then on April 1, 2013 Amanda spent her last 16 days of life at home with her parents, family, friends and dogs (Jack Skellington Sparrow and Spencer Spot Brownell) .

Amanda’s Mother, Ann Solorio Brownell has shared the PAIN of Amanda’s story, more than 1,000 times in front of more than 50,000 people, to educate everyone about these serious issues of suicide, bullying, and self-harm while spreading the message of LOVE for all people and all living things.

We are parents, grandparents, caregivers, siblings, friends, teachers, neighbors, social workers, school administrators, and students.

You are invited to stand against ALL forms of bullying by taking this simple pledge, to join as an Amanda Network Member:

“I pledge to not allow bullying in my presence.
If I don’t report it, I am just as guilty.”

UP-BEAT, NOT BEAT-UP, SOLUTIONS ORIENTATED MEDIA.

Good News Planet (GNP) was established by Milestone Broadcast Corporation, est. 1985 and is a rapidly growing media lifestyle publications covering and distributing news and entertainment from domestic and international sources related to health, science, business, international relations, and multi-cultural and niche community interests. GNP publishes and syndicates content on-line, on-air, and in print under the Good News Planet Brand. We are one of the first news, entertainment and events media to combine the article with the audio interview and continuously to develop innovations in news media, especially on the WEB. .

Approximately 80 percent of GNP articles and attached audio interviews are made available forever on demand, from the internet, at all times. GNP’s current story archive contains over 5,000 audio, video and text stories and events, indexed by most major search engines. Most stories are indexed by major search engines within four weeks.

Serving a niche but extraordinarily influential community with excellent brand equity that ranges from international lawmakers and industry shakers, GNP is a powerful community of people and organizations who have contributed stories to the site. Currently, 100,000 unique visitors from this audience generate 1 million hits each month. . The audience is made up of a highly-influential, professional persons concerned about making a positive impact on the World and future generations through media. They collaborate with Good News Planet, via their agencies and in person at Good News Planet events, to network with individuals who share their interest in leveraging the power of media to make a positive impact on society.

ABOUT THE GOOD NEWS PLANET BRAND. This is the international place of record to build good will for brands by ‘walking the talk’. GNP IS A HUMANITARIAN AGGREGATOR OF CONTENT. We encourage you to make your mark to investors, lawmakers, and citizens from around the World as a sponsor and supporter of the publication, and let the World know that you support people and organizations that care about doing good things for the benefit of all kinds of communities. We offer the following information to those seeking to place content on Good News Broadcast:

‘Good News’ Brand Essence: A place where people can participate in news media in positive ways.

‘Good News’ Brand Promise: We promise to provide voice, in audio, video and text media, and any emerging technology platform that helps to fairly present constructive, unbiased, newsworthy information to all audiences – without preference to any single political, religious, business or social agenda. ‘Good News’ Brand Tone and Manner: Positive, life-affirming, thought-provoking, and up-beat. Content Example One: We would cover news about an earthquake just like any other news organization. To make the story ‘Good News’, we cover multi-national relief efforts, provide unedited audio and video interviews for download, and offer information how our audience can participate in those efforts.

Another content example: We would cover the introduction of a new medicine for heart attack patients. Because Good News is defined as presenting the story without preference to any business agenda over another, we merely present the product as ‘a solution’, but not ‘the best solution’. We then give the audience resources to do their own research and supply the various media resources we can to help audiences make a decision about the story.

Programming for GNB comes from leading independent or network producers throughout the world who care about the power of and responsibility of using media to create a positive dialogue within audience communities.

In addition, inspirational writers, lecturers, celebrities and world figures will be part of the “team”. But the team is larger than that, as it requests you to become part of it and help create the content.

Bottom Line: We are offering our archives to serve as a resource for people making a positive impact on society through news, entertainment and events, no matter what the obstacles are.

FIRST FREE NATIONWIDE MOBILE HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICE DEVELOPED BY VOXIVA NOW AVAILABLE TO PROMOTE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

A New Model for Technology-Enabled Patient Engagement, Disease Management & Wellness

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4th, 2010

Voxiva, a global leader in mobile health information services, today announced the launch of text4baby, the first free mobile health service in the United States. The service, which is designed to improve maternal and child health by sending timely and relevant health information directly to mothers’ personal mobile phones, is built on Voxiva’s interactive mobile health platform which is used around the world to engage and support people in managing their health conditions and live healthier lives.

The text4baby program was developed through an unprecedented public-private partnership brought together by Voxiva and the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB). The partnership includes the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Department of Health and Human Services, CTIA – The Wireless Foundation and all major US wireless providers, Johnson & Johnson, WellPoint, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Pfizer, AmeriChoice/United Healthcare, MTV, AmeriHealth Mercy, state and local health departments, and a broad range of national and community-level health organizations.

“We believe programs like text4baby are critical to providing much-needed information and support to pregnant women and new moms, especially among underserved populations,” said Brian D. Perkins, Vice President of Corporate Affairs of Johnson & Johnson, text4baby’s founding sponsor. “Voxiva’s interactive mobile health platform and their many years of experience delivering mobile health solutions create a new way to reach expectant mothers who need important health information.”

Women who sign up for the service by texting BABY (or BEBE for Spanish) to 511411 will receive free text messages each week, timed to their expected due date or baby’s date of birth. These free messages focus on a variety of topics critical to maternal and child health, including birth defects prevention, immunization, nutrition, seasonal flu, mental health, oral health and safe sleep.

In addition to developing the text4baby system, Voxiva worked with the CTIA and all the major US mobile operators to make text4baby the first ever free to end user mobile health service in America. Unlike other text messaging-based services, text4baby participants pay nothing to send or receive messages.

“Text4baby demonstrates the tremendous reach of mobile health technology and the ability of mobile phones to inform and engage people to help them live healthier lives” said Paul Meyer, Chairman and President of Voxiva. “These same tools can be applied to many of America’s big health care challenges.”

Voxiva has been delivering interactive mobile health services around the world since 2001 and brings that wealth of experience to text4baby and the many solutions the company delivers for its health plan, pharmaceutical, pharmacy, provider and public health clients.

“We decided to work with Voxiva on text4baby not only for their long experience in mobile health and their track record in bringing together partnerships like this one, but also because their technology platform was built specifically for health behavior change and provides a great foundation to enhance and expand the text4baby service in the future” said Judy Meehan, HMHB’s Executive Director.

Lynn O’Connor Vos, CEO of Grey HealthCare Group (a WPP company) and a text4baby founding partner said “Text4baby would never been possible without Voxiva. Voxiva has a unique understanding of the intersection of health care, behavior change, technology and telecom. No one else has the same depth experience in mobile health as Voxiva.”

According to Meyer, “Over nearly a decade, we have worked with innovators in health behavioral change to create a range of mobile health solutions focused on prevention programs like smoking cessation and weight management, as well as treatment programs for specific conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and HIV/ AIDS. There is clear evidence that mobile health services can modify behavior through a steady flow on education, encouragement and engagement, and we are working with multiple partners to analyze the impact and effectiveness.” Studies from around the world have shown that mobile health applications can help smokers quit,1,2 HIV/AIDS patients adhere to treatment3 and diabetics manage their disease4,5.

Mobile health is an untapped market that provides the health care industry with unique opportunities to engage consumers in managing their health. Over 90 percent of American in the United States own a mobile phone, and more than 1.5 trillion text messages were sent in the U.S. in 2008 (Source: CTIA – The Wireless Association).

According to Meyer “Voxiva’s approach to mobile health is to create solutions with the broadest possible reach. Programs like text4baby leverage SMS text messaging because it can reach every mobile phone in the world – 4.6 billion. But that’s just the beginning. Our platform supports a broad range of technologies, from SMS to smartphone apps to interactive voice response which means our solutions combine these different tools to create a rich and engaging experience.”

Health care organizations, including health plans, chain drug stores, health delivery networks, state and local governments, and community-based partners can join the partnership at no cost by contacting partners@text4baby.org . Text4baby provides a unique opportunity to engage with customers and patients in a whole new way, while exploring the untapped potential of mobile technology for health and wellness programs.

About Voxiva Voxiva develops and deployes a range of mobile interactive solutions that support and engage consumers and patients in managing their health to live healthier lives. The company’s unique patented technology platform incorporates a full range of technology access channels, including SMS (text messaging), interactive voice, smart phone applications, web and email to offer a much broader reach than single technology solutions. Founded in 2001, Voxiva has nearly a decade’s worth of experience rapidly implementing mobile health services in a scalable, reliable and secure manner though a Web-based SaaS (Software as a Service) platform. Headquartered in Washington, DC, Voxiva has more than 160 employees and operates in 13 countries around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, India, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.

About Text4babyText4baby is made possible through a broad, public-private partnership.
Judy Meehan is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. Judy has had over 20 years of experience in the health care arena, including a background in the private sector as well as nonprofit management. Judy’s leadership at the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition has resulted in numerous new programs and campaigns which have shared messages about such topics as immunization, nutrition, prematurity and oral health. Most recently, she has helped to orchestrate an unprecedented public-private partnership with the development, promotion and implementation of the text4baby program. This award-winning initiative involving stakeholders from the White House to community health workers has energized the field with a renewed commitment to every child’s a chance at a healthy start and a safe and nurturing environment in which to grow.

About

About: Despite decades of public health outreach and education, more than 500,000 babies are born prematurely and an estimated 28,000 children die before their first birthday each year in the U.S. Many factors cause these negative outcomes, including health care access, poverty, and negative health behaviors, but research supports that increasing knowledge around health can help people stay healthier.

To help more pregnant women and new moms get information about caring for their health and giving their babies the best possible start in life, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) launched text4baby, the first free health text messaging service in the U.S.Text4baby supports moms by providing accurate, text-length health information and resources in a format that is personal and timely, using a channel she knows and uses. Over 85% of Americans own a cell phone and 72% of cell users send or receive text messages.

How Text4baby Works

Registration is easy and can be done online here or from your cell phone. Use your cell phone to text the word BABY (or BEBE for Spanish) to the number 511411. You’ll be asked to enter your baby’s due date or your baby’s birthday and your zip code. Once registered, you will start receiving free messages with tips for your pregnancy or caring for your baby.
These messages are timed to your due date or your baby’s birth date. If you are pregnant and your due date changes, text UPDATE to 511411 to enter your new due date. Once you have your baby, be sure to text in UPDATE with your baby’s birthday so you keep getting messages through baby’s first year.

If you want to stop receiving messages from text4baby, text STOP to 511411. To start receiving the messages again, you will have to enroll again by sending BABY to 511411 (BEBE to 511411 for Spanish messages).

Text4baby Messages are Free

Thanks to the support of CTIA – The Wireless Foundation and participating mobile operators, all messages you receive from text4baby are free! Even individuals without a text messaging plan can get these messages for free. If someone has limited texts per month, text4baby won’t take away from that limit. As long as you have service with one of the carriers listed below, text4baby is free for you.

Music by Michio Miyagi.

We fly on the exceptional China Airlines through their new route to Osaka, Japan, and for most they go on to Taiwan. This trip was for media and brought to us by China Airlines and The Foundation for Kansai Region promotion. We travel along with the leading Asian media in America; Asian Fusion Magazine, The Sing Tao and The World Newspaper and had a fascinating time. Everyone was special and it was a trip to remember for a life time. This post is the first of many to be shared with our audience and we hope that you will share your comments and experiences with us in audio, video or text.

We feature video about The Japanese Doll Festival (雛祭り, Hina-matsuri?), or Girls’ Day, is held on March 3.Platforms covered with a red carpet are used to display a set of ornamental dolls (雛人形, hina-ningyō?) representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.Origin and customs

The custom of displaying dolls began during the Heian period. Formerly, people believed the dolls possessed the power to contain bad spirits. Hinamatsuri traces its origins to an ancient Japanese custom called hina-nagashi (雛流し?, lit. “doll floating”), in which straw hina dolls are set afloat on a boat and sent down a river to the sea, supposedly taking troubles or bad spirits with them. The Shimogamo Shrine (part of the Kamo Shrine complex in Kyoto) celebrates the Nagashibina by floating these dolls between the Takano and Kamo Rivers to pray for the safety of children. People have stopped doing this now because of fishermen catching the dolls in their nets. They now send them out to sea, and when the spectators are gone they take the boats out of the water and bring them back to the temple and burn them.

The customary drink for the festival is shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice. A colored hina-arare, bite-sized crackers flavored with sugar or soy sauce depending on the region, and hishimochi, a diamond-shaped colored rice cake, are served. Chirashizushi (sushi rice flavored with sugar, vinegar, topped with raw fish and a variety of ingredients) is often eaten. A salt-based soup called ushiojiru containing clams still in the shell is also served. Clam shells in food are deemed the symbol of a united and peaceful couple, because a pair of clam shells fits perfectly, and no pair but the original pair can do so.

Families generally start to display the dolls in February and take them down immediately after the festival. Superstition says that leaving the dolls past March 4 will result in a late marriage for the daughter.

Placement

Hinamatsuri store display in Los Angeles, California featuring all 7 tiers.

The Kantō region and Kansai region have different placement orders of the dolls from left to right, but the order of dolls per level are the same.

The term for the platform in Japanese is hina dan (雛壇?). The layer of covering is called dankake (段掛?) or simply hi-mōsen (緋毛氈?), a red carpet with rainbow stripes at the bottom.

First platform, the top

An Emperor doll with an Empress doll, in front of a gold screen. The optional lampstands are also partially visible.

The top tier holds two dolls, known as imperial dolls (内裏雛 (だいりびな), dairi-bina?). These are the Emperor (御内裏様, Odairi-sama?) holding a ritual baton (笏, shaku?) and Empress (御雛様, Ohime-sama?) holding a fan. The words dairi means “imperial palace“, and hime means “girl” or “princess”.

The dolls are usually placed in front of a gold folding screen byōbu (屏風?) and placed beside green Japanese garden trees.

Optional are the two lampstands, called bonbori (雪洞?), and the paper or silk lanterns that are known as hibukuro (火袋?), which are usually decorated with cherry or ume blossom patterns.

Complete sets would include accessories placed between the two figures, known as sanbō kazari (三方飾?), composing of two vases of artificial peach branch kuchibana (口花?).

The traditional arrangement had the male on the right, while modern arrangements had him on the left (from the viewer’s perspective).

Second platform

The second tier holds three court ladies san-nin kanjo (三人官女?).
