Dear Colleagues,

This is a moment of extreme danger for the world. Nuclear war remains an increased existential hazard for humanity. It is amplified by the Ukraine war and the bellicose outrageous threats of Russia, as well as the failure of the United States, NATO and Russia to renounce their present doctrine that admits the first use of nuclear weapons, a policy at odds with the platform that President Biden promoted in his election campaign that declared the sole purpose of having nuclear weapons is to prevent them from being used. Simultaneously, instead of progress toward fulfillment of the UN resolution establishing Israel that called for a two state solution with a stable Israel and Palestine living side by side, we are shocked by the inhumane attacks on innocent civilians by Hamas and the horrors of the responses by the Netanyahu administration. Chaos, fear, bloodshed, winds of escalation, drumbeats of hatred make unrelenting work for peace necessary.

Travelling through the night of a storm requires a clear compass. Our efforts, we hope, can help make the guidance of a compass of reason, clarity and practicality clear. There is no substitute to advancing civilization through the rule of law, focusing on human security policies such as are promoted in the Sustainable Development Goals, and utilizing the skills of dialogue and diplomacy. Does this imply that the defensive use of military force should be disregarded? By no means. But, the use of force alone will not lead us out of the current predicaments.

We hope that our work will be of service in leading to a peaceful, sustainale future.

Cyberspace is one of the most critical areas of our nation’s defense and is a 24/7 responsibility for Soldiers stationed around the world as part of U.S. Army Cyber Command.
The U.S. Army Cyber Command engages in cyberwarfare against global cyber threats and adversaries, secures the country’s military data networks and weapons platforms, facilitates communications between joint military operations, and protects critical U.S. infrastructure. These elite cyber operators are highly trained to perform under pressure confidently, making them some of the most capable and combat-ready warriors in the U.S. military.
Major Erika Alvarado is a Cyber Operations Planner and Deputy Commander and Training Officer for the U.S. Army Reserve Cyber Protection Brigade – which supports the U.S. Army Cyber Command. In her role, Major Alvarado helps the Army keep pace with rapidly changing cyber capabilities and technologies to protect the country from cyber threats and attacks worldwide.
Major Alvarado enlisted in the Army Reserve at 17-years-old and today is one of the many skilled Army Soldiers serving our nation as the country’s first line of defense in cyberspace.
Cybersecurity is the fastest-growing field in the nation. The Army is well-positioned to train the next generation of cyber experts with opportunities to become analysts, coders, data scientists, and planners for roles in cyber operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic cyber intelligence, and more.
Major Alvarado will be available to discuss the importance of cybersecurity awareness, her role with the U.S. Army Cyber Command, and what it’s like to be engaged in today’s cyberspace fight.

Today, lack of access to safe water and adequate sanitation is one of the most important threats to human well-being throughout the world. Water-related diseases are a major contributor to the global burden of illness. No other single intervention is more likely to have a significant impact on global health than the provision of safe water. This timely conference at the United Nations seeks to show how to fully integrate safe water in countries’ disease reduction strategies — a pre-requisite to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The conference also seeks to provide the basis for preventive action by leaders of governments, international organizations, and private sector, managing critical water resources and services for public health.

Almost fifty per cent of the developing worlds population 2.5 billion people lack improved sanitation facilities, and over 884 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more.

Diseases spread by unsafe water cause 3 million deaths a year. Young children are the most likely to suffer and die from these diseases. Diarrhea, primarily a disease of dirty water, is the biggest killer of children under five in poor countries, resulting in nearly 4,000 preventable deaths each day, 1.8 million per year. At any given time, almost half of all people living in developing countries are suffering from a health problem caused by lack of safe water and sanitation that undermines their ability to study or work. Every year, children miss more than 443 million school days because of water-related illnesses.
