A volcano in southwest Iceland erupted again on Tuesday, after a brief pause of eight months, spewing lava and smoke into the air. The eruption occurred in the Fagradalsfjall volcano, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) from the capital Reykjavik, and near the Keflavik Airport, the country’s main international hub.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said the eruption was small and did not pose a threat to aviation or public safety. However, it warned people to stay away from the site, as there may be high levels of volcanic gases and poor air quality in the vicinity. The IMO also advised people to monitor the air quality in their area and follow the instructions of the health authorities.

The eruption was preceded by a series of earthquakes that shook the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the volcano is located, for several days. The seismic activity indicated that magma was moving close to the surface, and scientists had anticipated an eruption somewhere on the peninsula.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano had previously erupted in March 2021, after nearly 800 years of dormancy. The eruption lasted for six months and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, who came to witness the spectacular lava flows and fountains. The eruption was considered a “tourist eruption”, as it was relatively harmless and accessible.

However, the new eruption may have a different impact on the tourism industry, which is already struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some tour operators have canceled their trips to the volcano, citing safety concerns and uncertainty. Others have resumed their tours but with stricter measures and precautions.

The eruption may also affect the air quality in the region, especially if the wind direction changes and carries the volcanic plume toward populated areas. The plume contains sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and other gases that can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and cause respiratory problems. People with asthma, heart disease, or other chronic conditions are more vulnerable to the effects of volcanic gases.

The IMO said it will continue to monitor the eruption and provide updates on its website and social media. It also urged the public to respect nature and the environment, and not to leave any traces or litter behind when visiting the volcano.

Under the Regional Law, PromoTurismoFVG, in collaboration with ERSA, is the chosen organisation for the Trail’s complete management and coordination of all members. Thereby making Friuli Venezia Giulia the only region in Italy, at this time, to have a single organisation managing the wine trail projects and undertaking all actions related to the operation with its own internal resources. To this effect, PromoTurismoFVG receives funding from the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and uses it to fulfil the purposes of the system and the operators that belong to it.

The “Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour” project also brings another important change to the Italian wine tourism world: Friuli Venezia Giulia is in fact the first region in Italy to regulate (art. 6 of the Regional Law 22/2015) the administration of traditional agro-food production, and speciality and quality non-cooked production along with tastings during wine cellar visits.

The SVS aims to give tourists a true holiday experience, surrounded by the wine and food of Friuli Venezia Giulia, just like a genuine, authentic and quality sample of the “Made in Italy” taste. Among the targets of SVS are the creation of products and bespoke services for the wine-tourist, organised either individually or in groups, the development of activities related to wine and other local products, the implementation of promotional activities aimed at placing the offer in the market, the communication and promotion of a single receptacle that holds all of what the region and its partners have to offer, the integration of the SVS contents with PromoTurismoFVG’s sales promotion strategy and all regional partners’ strategies.

The key word characterising SVS’s first actions is synergy: in fact, PromoTurismoFVG has worked closely with a work group, composed of the regional food and wine world’s main players, to build a product that can easily be shared within the region. The fruits of our labour came from the
experience and work done when managing the previous tourist wine trail..

SVS, which involves the community as a whole, is not a physical journey but a single receptacle in which six different life experiences areprovided in related areas, which will benefit from unique promotion.
The following categories and subjects can only, and exclusively, join Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour: wineries, i.e. cooperative wine cellars and private wine producers; agro-tourism operators with accommodation and board or one of the two activities; restaurants, trattorias, osterias with kitchen, restaurants located in hotels of at least 3 stars; farms producing and processing traditional food products. From 2018, membership of the following will be available: tasting shops, bars and other similar places with or without kitchen (bars, breweries, bakeries, cafes, wineries); arts and crafts companies which focus on items linked to the rural, wine and food world, food and wine museums, eco-museums and structures with inherent local traditions linked to food, wine and craft products; the environment, culture and infrastructure of artistic and cultural interests or parks; service companies (travel agents, tour operators, transport hire firms, cooperatives of tour guides) and professionals and entertainers linked to tourism, culture and local traditions

The “Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour” participants benefit from promotion provided by PromoTurismoFVG, which includes web marketing, media relations, advertising investments, participation in trade fairs and specific marketing aimed at improving the identification and enhancement of structures. SVS will also have a logo and corporate image.
To ensure a high standard of quality, the required minimum qualities for participating are listed in
individual membership cards, by each category.
These requirements, along with other relevant details as to how SVS operates, can be found within the regulations that govern the project.

Beacon, New York, October 19th, 2016 – With just four more opportunities to visit the Island this season the popular tours of this historic, picturesque island in the Hudson River just south of Beacon and Newburgh, NY, end for the season Sunday, Oct. 30th with visits to the former Bannerman residence and castle. Two very special Hudson River Legend Tours cap off the season on Sat Oct 22nd and Sat Oct 29th. Fall on the river is probably the most beautiful time to take a river tour and visit the Island. The island hosted it’s most successful season ever with record attendance and an audience pleasing series of concerts and other special events throughout the summer including two SRO Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. productions and the sixth annual Chef’s Farm Fresh Dinner.
There will be off season events at the new Bannerman Island Gallery curated by Laurie Clark. The BCT continues raising raising funds to add braces to to the #3 Warehouse and to convert the Bannerman residence into a visitor/education. The 2017 season starts the first week of May.

The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc., in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, provides public tours of Bannerman Castle and Pollepel Island. Available tours consist of guided walking tours on the island with access either by passenger tour boat or as part of a guided kayak excursion. Tours depart from Beacon (kayak or passenger boat), Cold Spring (kayak), and Cornwall-on-Hudson (kayak). Reservations are required for all tours. Wear comfortable shoes as there is some rough terrain on the walking tours. Strollers cannot be accommodated. There is a 72-step climb from the dock to the start of the tour. Tours depart rain or shine.

Seasonal tours began Sat. Apr 30th running weekends through October 30th departing at 11:00am from Beacon, NY. Bannerman Island Tour tickets are $35.00. Advance purchase required. The Bannerman Castle Trust is dedicated to preserving Bannerman Castle as an educational, cultural, historical, and recreational facility that promotes heritage tourism in the Hudson Valley. They are also responsible for arranging public tours of the island each year; performing docks, trails, and gardens maintenance; and conducting other special projects (for example, preparation of Historic Structures Reports to document the history of the Castle) under the purview of the NYSOPRHP.
