Manhattan, NY – The first-ever Special Olympics New York regional floorball tournament will be held at Javits Center in New York City Saturday. More than 500 athletes and coaches from New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley and the Southern Tier will compete.

Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman and NYC Public Schools Chancellor David C. Banks will kick off the event during Opening Ceremonies, beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m.

The event is OPEN PRESS and will be held as follows:

• Date: Saturday, Dec. 2
• Time: 9:30 a.m. Opening Ceremonies; followed by competition until approximately 4 p.m.
• Location: Jacob K. Javits Center (429 11th Avenue, New York, NY 10001)

The event will also include a Young Athletes program and free health screenings for athletes in five disciplines. More than 150 volunteers will support the event.

Special Olympics New York made the transition from floor hockey to floorball this winter, and Saturday’s tournament will be the first multi-region opportunity for athletes to go for the gold. Learn more about the transition here.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) hosted their annual Pro-Am Tennis & Golf Tournament in South Florida. The tournaments were a part of a five-day event that combines the 2023 Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues and annual Pro-Am Tournaments.  2023 is a double-anniversary for the PCF as it was both the 25^th Anniversary of the PCF in Palm Beach and the 30^th Anniversary year of the Foundation itself.

The Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues in Palm Beach took place over three days, which included the annual PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament and special golf tournament; and concluded with three days of events in Miami. The first night in Palm Beach saw a talk held at the home of Roxann Taylor before the PCF dinner at the home of Jeff and Mei Sze Greene.  The highlight of the second day was the Gala Dinner hosted by Howard and Wendy Cox and held at the Cox Science Center and Aquarium with entertainment by The Beach Boys.  The Cox Science Center has educated some 10 million young minds in STEM during its sixty years of operation with a new expansion and aquarium due to open in 2026.

Guests were invited to attend a variety of salons on topics similar to those covered at the Global Conference, but in much smaller, more intimate landmark settings and stunning private homes. Guests were able to attend more than 20 sessions, with over 120 interesting panelists.

All proceeds from the PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament and the Golf Tournament funded PCF’s promising and innovative research efforts for the prevention, detection and treatment of prostate cancer, and to help extend and improve the lives of all cancer patients:

• Young Investigators: PCF has launched and supported the careers of more than 500 scientists whose work has led to 15 new FDA-approved treatments.  Since the creation of the PCF some 2,000 young investigator awards have been made and their work has led to four Nobel prizes in Medicine.

• VA Partnership: providing best-in-care treatments for our U.S. veterans

• Team Science: PCF Challenge Award Teams continue to produce scientific breakthroughs and serve as a role model for other disease-specific foundations.

• The Cutting Edge of Research: By focusing on immunotherapy, the microbiome and nutrition science, discoveries in PCF-funded research have been highly leveraged in diagnosing and treating more than 70 other cancers.

• Precision Medicine: PCF helps identify the right treatment for the right patient at the right time, and may be at the heart of solving the mystery of cancer. The newest, largest initiative TACTICAL (Therapy ACceleration To Intercept CAncer Lethality) aims to provide awards of up to $10 million over three years to support large-scale research projects led by qualified teams of academic scientists that specifically address the development of 21st Century therapies for lethal forms of prostate cancer.

Following the Gala on Saturday night, the PCF Pro-Am finals took place on Sunday afternoon at The Breakers.  Players as well as spectators enjoyed some great matches. After a competitive day, this year’s winners included Laura Gordon (Champion – Group 1), Scott Shleifer Runner-Up – Group 1), Marisa Brown (Champion – Group 2), Steve Tananbaum (Runner-Up – Group 2), Arik Ruchim (Champion – Group 3) and Joe Jacobs (Runner-Up – Group 3).

Following the conclusion of the tennis tournament,  a reception, panel discussion and dinner was hosted by Don and Katrina Peebles at The Bath Club in Miami.

Affected by COVID-19, the event is the Foundation’s first in-person fundraiser for 2020

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) held its 38th Annual Golf Tournament at the scenic Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, NY. The event was the first in-person fundraiser for the SWCRF in 2020, and although it was scaled down to allow for social distancing, the tournament raised $160,000. Funds raised support the SWCRF collaborative cancer research programs.

Notable attendees included Ann Liguori, Correspondent, WFAN & CBS Sports Radio Network, Samuel Waxman, MD, Founder and CEO of the SWCRF, Gary Jacob, Executive Vice President of Glenwood Management, Robert Ivanhoe, Vice Chair of Greenberg Traurig and Co-Chair of the REIT Practice, Peter D’Arcy, Area Executive of M&T Bank Corp, Jeff Mann, owner of Mann Publications, and William T. Sullivan, Executive Director of the SWCRF.

Following a beautiful brisk and sunny day on the course, golfers gathered for an open-air reception and awards program. “This tournament was started several years ago, and it has helped to raise substantial funds for cancer research. Despite these challenging times, today is an example of the great good that can come when friends gather to support research that is critically needed. More importantly, you are supporting research committed to finding better treatments for cancer, the world’s leading cause of suffering and premature mortality,” Samuel Waxman, M.D., founder and CEO of the SWCRF.

The American Cancer Society predicts that 1.8 million Americans – or more than 4,900 every day – will receive a cancer diagnosis this year. In 2020, the SWCRF directed more than $2.2 million in donor-supported funds to fund a record 50 research scientists at some of the world’s leading research institutions. The SWCRF research programs address more than 14 types of cancer and require that those who receive research funding, collaborate with labs outside of their disciplines and institutions. This type of collaboration fosters cooperation and knowledge sharing across labs and disciplines to speed the development of promising therapies.

Gary Jacob co-chairs the SWCRF Golf Tournament host committee with Dennis Herman, the Chairman and CEO of Beekman International Center, Ltd. Mr. Jacob and Mr. Herman also are members of the SWCRF Board of Directors. The committee members are Jeff Mann, Jay Sullivan, Director of Business Development at Shannon River Partners, Dr. Samuel Waxman, and Ari Zagdanski of Kinsman Property Group. The tournament is the organization’s longest-running event that has raised millions for cancer research. During the past 43 years, the SWCRF awarded nearly $100 million to support the work of more than 200 researchers around the world.  Gary Jacob and M&T Bank sponsored the Golf Tournament.
