IT’S SUMMERTIME
& THE SNACKIN’ IS EASY
How to Indulge & Enjoy Nutritious Foods Between Meals
Especially When Traveling, or Enjoying Outdoor Activities

For most Americans summertime means travel, picnics, camping, hiking and overall fun outdoor activities. Whether you’re hitting the road, the skies or an RV, you may experience longer than usual stretches between meals. So, it’s important to prepare some healthy, nutritious and tasty snacks for your trip.
Exactly what you pack for your summertime snacks is an important consideration for you and your family. It makes sense to stick to a healthy eating routine, to offset any possible weight gain.
Choosing the right foods as snacks can help provide energy, decrease your hunger and keep you from overeating at mealtime. Travel snacks also need to be easily portable for the road or traveling by plane and must meet any restrictions imposed at airports.
That’s why serving size is also an important consideration. It helps to make sure the snacks are easy to carry in a pocket, backpack or in carry-on luggage. Parents also must think about food choices that their kids will actually want to eat. Packaged snacks are a great choice since the serving size is clearly marked on the label.
With so many factors to consider, nutritionist and Registered Dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick says she has some perfect choices for summertime snacks, including new indulgent treats that allow consumers to satisfy their sweet tooth without all the sugar.
Kristin Kirkpatrick shares her perspective on snacking for the summer, a checklist of what you’ll want to remember and is able to offer a variety of delicious and nutritious ideas for families on the go during this time of year.

A unique trail, perfectly connecting the Friuli Venezia Giulia coast with its mountains, travelling through its vineyards and hills, and creating a network of regional food and wine resources together with cultural and environmental ones, in order to build a transversal and integrated product to enhance food and wine tourism and make it more accessible for tourists. This is the ambitious goal of the “Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour” (Strada del Vino e Sapori Friuli Venezia Giulia, SVS), a project arising from the Regional Law 22/2015 to develop regional tourism in a coordinated, competitive and non-fragmented manner, linked to the world of wine and agro-food and in line with the tourism market demand.

Under the Regional Law, PromoTurismoFVG, in collaboration with ERSA, is the chosen organisation for the Trail’s complete management and coordination of all members. Thereby making Friuli Venezia Giulia the only region in Italy, at this time, to have a single organisation managing the wine trail projects and undertaking all actions related to the operation with its own internal resources. To this effect, PromoTurismoFVG receives funding from the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and uses it to fulfil the purposes of the system and the operators that belong to it.

The “Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour” project also brings another important change to the Italian wine tourism world: Friuli Venezia Giulia is in fact the first region in Italy to regulate (art. 6 of the Regional Law 22/2015) the administration of traditional agro-food production, and speciality and quality non-cooked production along with tastings during wine cellar visits.

The SVS aims to give tourists a true holiday experience, surrounded by the wine and food of Friuli Venezia Giulia, just like a genuine, authentic and quality sample of the “Made in Italy” taste. Among the targets of SVS are the creation of products and bespoke services for the wine-tourist, organised either individually or in groups, the development of activities related to wine and other local products, the implementation of promotional activities aimed at placing the offer in the market, the communication and promotion of a single receptacle that holds all of what the region and its partners have to offer, the integration of the SVS contents with PromoTurismoFVG’s sales promotion strategy and all regional partners’ strategies.

The key word characterising SVS’s first actions is synergy: in fact, PromoTurismoFVG has worked closely with a work group, composed of the regional food and wine world’s main players, to build a product that can easily be shared within the region. The fruits of our labour came from the
experience and work done when managing the previous tourist wine trail..

SVS, which involves the community as a whole, is not a physical journey but a single receptacle in which six different life experiences areprovided in related areas, which will benefit from unique promotion.
The following categories and subjects can only, and exclusively, join Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour: wineries, i.e. cooperative wine cellars and private wine producers; agro-tourism operators with accommodation and board or one of the two activities; restaurants, trattorias, osterias with kitchen, restaurants located in hotels of at least 3 stars; farms producing and processing traditional food products. From 2018, membership of the following will be available: tasting shops, bars and other similar places with or without kitchen (bars, breweries, bakeries, cafes, wineries); arts and crafts companies which focus on items linked to the rural, wine and food world, food and wine museums, eco-museums and structures with inherent local traditions linked to food, wine and craft products; the environment, culture and infrastructure of artistic and cultural interests or parks; service companies (travel agents, tour operators, transport hire firms, cooperatives of tour guides) and professionals and entertainers linked to tourism, culture and local traditions

The “Tastes of Friuli Venezia Giulia Food and Wine Tour” participants benefit from promotion provided by PromoTurismoFVG, which includes web marketing, media relations, advertising investments, participation in trade fairs and specific marketing aimed at improving the identification and enhancement of structures. SVS will also have a logo and corporate image.
To ensure a high standard of quality, the required minimum qualities for participating are listed in
individual membership cards, by each category.
These requirements, along with other relevant details as to how SVS operates, can be found within the regulations that govern the project.

In September 2008, the company changed it’s name from the R.A.B. Food Group to the Manischewitz Company, under which it operates today.

It all started with Rabbi Dov Behr

The B. Manischewitz Company, LLC traces its beginnings back to the spring of 1888, when Rabbi Dov Behr Manischewitz opened a small Matzo bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A humble beginning

It was largely from his spiritual concerns that he set out to make matzo or unleavened bread for Passover, first for his family and a few friends, but soon for many of the devout Jews of the city. His bakery soon evolved into a successful business, innovative and prosperous––though never inattentive to the spiritual needs of its customers.

From small bakery to booming business

By the end of the century, demand for his matzo had become so great that Rabbi Manischewitz turned to the use of gas-fired ovens, replacing the older coal stoves being used by other Jewish bakers. The newer ovens allowed for much more careful control of the baking speed, insuring a consistent and standard quality to the matzos.
He also introduced portable traveling-tunnel ovens, and was the first to package his matzos for shipment to places beyond the immediate neighborhood of his bakery. He even began shipping his matzos overseas, to such diverse places as England, Japan, France, Hungary, Egypt and New Zealand. His bright, clean bakery would become a model for future kosher bakeries, both in America and abroad.

Matzo on the move

In 1932, the company built a second factory. Located in Jersey City, New Jersey, the plant quickly became the model for all new machine-made matzo bakeries worldwide. Closer to a much larger Jewish population than that of Cincinnati, the new factory also made distribution of the company’s product more efficient and quickly enlarged its customer base. The Manischewitz label was soon dominant in ethnic grocery stores and delicatessens in the larger East Coast cities. Thanks to the technology and efficiency of the New Jersey factory, Manischewitz was able to close down the Cincinnati facility altogether.

Same quality, more quantity

In 1940, Manischewitz produced its first Tam Tam cracker. It signaled the initial departure from its line of matzo products. About the same time, in a licensing arrangement, Manischewitz wines began to be sold throughout the country.
In 1954, the company purchased a processing plant located in Vineland, New Jersey. The Vineland facility, which has now ceased operations, manufactured all of the company’s canned and jarred products, including old familiar favorites like gefilte fish, chicken soup and borscht. The plant was primarily a hand-pack processing operation stressing careful attention to quality and flexibility. Workers there packed about 2,000,000 lbs. of fish and 1,000,000 lbs. of beets each year.

(including Art Basel Week), at The Moore Building in Miami’s Design District.Honoring the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León’s arrival in Florida,
the exhibition is curated by designer/architect Juli Capella and is presented by
Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), promoting Spanish culture and heritage worldwide.
Co-presenters are The Centro Cultural Español en Miami (CCE Miami), SPAIN arts & culture and the España Florida Foundation. www.accioncultural.es/en/tapas_spanish_design_for_foodThe show encompasses 8,000 square feet with more than 200 exhibits, displays and installations by Spanish chefs, designers, architects, wineries and restaurantsspanning the last 25 years of Spain’s avant-garde experimental blending of design and food. Legendary Spanish culinary icons are also featured, including the paella pan, traditional wineskins and flasks, the bota, botijo and porrón.

Showcasing imagination and talent targeting the taste buds, the show
features three distinct elements:
1.) The Kitchen (preparation and utensils)
2.) The Table (objects used to sample food)
3.) The Meal (food design).

“Tapas perfectly showcases how Spanish chefs and designers are spearheading our culture’s gastronomic and design innovations,” said Acción Cultural Española’s CEO, Elvira Marco.

“Spain chose Miami to premiere Tapas in the U.S. because the global spotlight shines so brightly on this design and food destination, especially as its season takes off during Art Basel Week. This new, international traveling cultural experience from Spain aims to engage and mix with the international design and food influences converging in Miami for the love of art.”

“This exhibition is a tribute to the origins of the word Tapa,” said the curator, Juli Capella.

Tapa also means lid in Spanish, and is derived from the ancient custom to cover (tapar) a glass of wine with a slice of bread or chilled meat to keep out dust and insects.

“During the turn of this century, Spain has led a bold, avant-garde experiment: combining high cuisine with high design,” adds Capella.

“Culinary creations are matched to their containers, thus going beyond raw ingredients and cooking.“This Spanish revolution fosters the partnership between chef and designer,” said Juli Capella, curator.

     (Curator Juli Capella)

The Tapas tradition best exemplifies Spain’s true, social nature.

When a group of friends gets together at the table to taste portions of widely varying flavors, it’s more than just a way to enjoy food – it’s also a great way to share an experience. This is Spain’s message to today’s world: bring people together for real social connections, with Tapas.

Curator Juli Capella further emphasizes the role that design plays in this exhibition, and in Spain’s new design-rich culinary influences: “In a world without design, we would be sitting naked on the ground, there would be no tables and no chairs, no cameras or wristwatches.”

“Design is synonymous with progress. As our different cultures engage in more permanent contact and we are all influenced by each other, the distinctive features of geographical design by countries or by regions are melting away in our inter-connected world.”

“Unlike languages (Spanish vs. English, for example), design is like music: a universal idiom,” said Juli Capella.

Tapas – Spanish Design for Food explores the interaction between design and gastronomy, two creative disciplines enjoying a boom in Spain and achieving international acclaim. The exhibition features products designed by Spaniards, even if produced in another country, along with items made in Spain by foreign designers.

Tapas offers a contemporary and cutting-edge perspective via a number of designs produced exclusively for leading restaurants such as elBulli, El Celler de Can Roca (named the best restaurant in the world in 2013) and Mugaritz.

Designers, architects, wineries, restaurants and chefs have contributed their works for a show which not only features more than two hundred exhibits, but also a large collection of wine bottles which stand out for their bold and appealing labels.

The exhibition includes an audiovisual presentation featuring a selection of interior design in Spanish restaurants. It also features wineries from across Spain which stand out for the quality of their architectural designs, including designs by Gehry, Hadid and Moneo.

The Spanish artist Miralda will present Eat You – Eat Me, an interactive “edible performance art” installation at the public opening November 9.

Visitors will receive an edible printout (edible paper with edible inks), with their image inserted onto one of three Tapa recipes (illustrating Octopus Galician Style, Bold Potatoes, and Lamb’s Kidneys in Sherry).

Tapas is divided into three major sections within the 8,000-square-foot exhibition:

1. The kitchen

This is the working area, a laboratory which blends functionality and aesthetics. A feature of every home and restaurant which must be equipped with the accoutrements, utensils, apparatus, dishes and furniture used to prepare food, such as casseroles, cutlery, containers and a range of equipment employed to handle food, process and cook it, and finally arrange it on the dishes or plates which will be served at table. Here, in a space essentially dedicated to work, functionality previously reigned supreme, although new materials and the fact that the kitchen has gradually taken on an increasingly important role within the home have led to a change in habits and the aesthetics of the furniture and objects to be found here.

2. The table

This is where food and drink are taken in, a shared space combining furniture and architecture with functionality and aesthetics. The section reveals the whole host of objects designed for the presentation and sampling of food. Whether at home or in a restaurant, on a airplane or picnicking in the countryside, the act of eating is accompanied by a ritual made up of objects which will vary depending on the circumstances, and could include anything from the smallest salt cellar to the crockery, cutlery, glassware, table linen, furniture (tables, chairs, lamps) and interior decor, right up to the architecture of famous wineries and restaurants.

3. The meal

Ingredients, techniques and diet, combining tradition and modernity. This section, divided into several settings, presents first of all food produce which stands out above all from the formal perspective. It also shows the evolution of traditional Spanish products “devised” by mankind, in their form or concept (anchovy-stuffed olives, churros and paella, whose origins are lost in the mists of time), alongside more elaborate and avant-garde techniques by innovative chefs. From Spanish ingredients such as the cured hams of the Iberian pig to the most sophisticated creations dreamt up at elBulli, alongside native culinary creations including the paella and gazpacho, and such inspired but anonymous inventions as the pintxo bar snacks of the Basque Country.

This section contains a range of references and historical anecdotes to the origins of Spain’s famed tapas, including one of many possible explanations suggesting that the practice may have begun in the 13th century (when King Alfonso the Wise suffered an illness and was advised to drink the occasional glass of wine).

New designs for new social challenges are also featured in this third setting, highlighting the interest taken by Spanish design in new technologies, its commitment to the restoration of traditional craft techniques in harmony with the values of eco-design, and the use of recycled materials such as cardboard and wood, as well as plants such as bulrushes.
