A kickoff event to announce Operation Warrior Shield’s new initiative, Operation Canine Companion, took place at the studio of American Abstract Artist, Peter Reginato, hosted by Daniela Zahradnikova of DZZone NYC.

Operation Warrior’s Shield’s founder Chief Master Sergeant (ret) Ed Schloeman led a lively presentation including words and testimonials from notable supporters including Goodwill Ambassador Errol Rappaport, Lorraine Silvetz, Executive Director of Global Stress Initiative, three-time Emmy Award winning Anchor and NYTimes Best Selling Author, Rita Cosby, and retired NYPD Sergeant (Special Assignment), Health & Wellness Section and Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army Reserve, Wilem Wong. The evening included a special performance of God Bless America by fan favorite, Michelle DellaFave of The Dean Martin Show fame.

“Our goal is to provide uniquely trained, loving and supportive canine companions to veterans and first responders and their families who live with physical and emotional injuries incurred in the line of duty,” explains Schloeman. “Our companion dogs unconditionally bring a sense of safety, camaraderie, and most importantly, a special emotional support that helps reduce the stresses and challenges that our heroes face each and every day.”

OWS’ first companions-in training are two 3-month old Labrador retriever puppies. One is named “Yellin” (after WWII pilot and OWS co-founder, Jerry Yellin) and the other is “Louie” (named after 106-year old WWII veteran, Louis Forte). Both dogs are currently living in upstate New York with Hope for Heroes dog trainers, Mitch Serlin and Matt Notaro.

“We start with 8 week old puppies, and socialize them with various stimuli such as traffic, loud sounds, crowds, public transportation, and the like, keeping in mind the specific lifestyle and activities of the recipient vet and family,” explains Serlin. “Then we set up a bonding period for the puppy and family, and we will be providing support throughout the dog’s life.”

According to the 2021 National Veteran Suicide Prevention report*, an average of 17 veterans commit suicide daily. It is in response to this tragedy that Operation Warrior Shield reaches out to assist military and first responders and their families who are fighting a daily battle for improved quality of life to help them find a path to inner and outer health and well-being.

The evening also served as a kick-off for Operation Warrior Shield’s Fall gala, Healing for Heroes, which is set to take place on November 18, at The Water Club.

Operation Warrior Shield is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, whose primary mission is to provide comprehensive support programs for service members, veterans and first responders, with a focus on “Healing Their Hidden Wounds” through no-cost holistic wellness services.

Model and Designer, Avadora Mimouni of Avadora Mimouni Collection donated her luxury bags to help raise funds for OWS. Several longtime supporters of OWS, Rita Cosby, Lorraine Silvetz and Lucia Kaiser, among other attendees were wearing Avadora Mimouni original bags for the evening. Jose Orellana of ClickMagazine facilitated the donation of food and wine from Chef Marla Roscioli , Sebastian Cardona from Village Meats, Noelia Polanco of Noelias Sweet Delights and Josefina Then from Luscious Vines. Heroes Vodka donated spirits to be enjoyed by attendees. Bethann Carbone and Michael Heil of Branding Ovation donated branding development and design sercvices for the Operation Canine Companion initiative theme, as well as marketing and PR services. Peter Reginato provided for the use of one of his paintings to be utilized in the design of the event theme. Everyone was happy to do all they could in support of our service members and veterans. 1. Pingtang Telescope, China

The Pingtang telescope was completed in September 2016, becoming the world’s largest radio telescope in the process.
Its dish measures more than 1,600 feet across and is capable of capturing signals more than 1,000 light years from earth.

2. Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland

The world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel became operational in December 2016. It is 35 miles long, took 17 years to construct, and lies 6,500 feet below the Gotthard Massif, a mountain range within the Swiss Alps.

3. Panama Canal, Panama

The original Panama Canal, which was constructed more than 100 years ago, is one of the Modern Wonders of the World, but a century of progress meant that it had to be widened. Some 40,000 workers worked on the expansion project, and the completed canal opened in 2016 at a cost of $5.4 billion.

4. The Bride Skyscraper, Iraq

Who ever thought such a proposal would be possible? The 3,779-foot-tall “Bride” skyscraper is proposed for construction in Basra, Iraq.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s the site of the first battle of the 2003 US invasion.

The design is covered with solar panels, so the skyscraper will be able to power itself. It will also be the world’s tallest building if (when?) completed in 2026.

5. Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, China

This 26-mile-long cross-sea bridge is the longest of its kind in the world, stretching almost 26 miles out into the open ocean.

When it opened, it cut the travel time for people traveling between east China and the island of Huangdao in half.

6. Itaipu Dam, Brazil

Completed more than 30 years ago, this hydroelectric dam produces more power than any other in the world.

In fact, its energy generation is so large that it supplies Paraguay with 75% and Brazil with 20% of their energy needs respectively.

7. Crossrail Project, London

The largest construction project ever undertaken in Europe will see 10 new train lines added to the existing London Underground system,

and 30 existing stations connected via brand-new tunnels. It will begin service in 2017, and be in full operation by 2020.

8. Hyderabad Metro Rail, India

This railway system marks the first time that communication-based train control will be implemented in India.

With three brand-new metro lines for the city of Hyderabad, the network is set to open in 2017.

9. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, China

More than 42 million people live in China’s Pearl River Delta, and this gargantuan project will link its three major cities,

namely Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong, via a series of bridges and underwater tunnels. It will open to traffic in December 2017.

10. Mall of the World, Dubai

The proposal for the largest mall on earth comprises more than 48 million square feet of enclosed, air-conditioned luxury in the middle of the desert.

As part of the design, the largest indoor game park in the world will be constructed, as will 20,000 hotel rooms to cater to the 180 million annual visitors

that the development is expected to receive when completed in 2029.

12. Riyadh Metro, Saudi Arabia

This $23.5 billion rail line will boast a flagship station designed by world-famous architect, Zaha Hadid.

Operation is scheduled to begin in 2019, and the railway will have 109 miles of railway on completion, revolutionizing how the residents of Riyadh get around.

13. Songdo Smart City, South Korea

Built on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land along the waterfront of the South Korean city of Incheon, this smart city

was completed in 2015. Home to some 67,000 residents, it has near-comprehensive internet access and offers a taste of future urban life.

14. South-North Water Transfer Project, China

The Chinese have set about moving some 45 billion cubic feet of water from the mighty Yangtze River in the south of the country,

to the more arid industrialized north. They will do so via three canals and have spent some $79 billion on the project thus far.

15. Sognefjord Submerged Floating Tunnel, Norway

Perhaps the most intriguing of all the projects on this list is a Norwegian proposal for building a $25 billion submerged

floating tunnel beneath the Sognefjord, the largest Fjord in Norway, which is 3,000 feet wide and 4,000 feet deep.

This radical tunnel will be the first of its kind in the world if the vision is realized.

16. Urban Renewal Project, Turkey

Turkey has incredible ambitions for renewing its urban areas. Over the next 20 years, the country plans to demolish more than

7 million buildings and build earthquake-resistant, modern structures in their place.
The colossal cost of all this is estimated at $400 billion.

In September 2008, the company changed it’s name from the R.A.B. Food Group to the Manischewitz Company, under which it operates today.

It all started with Rabbi Dov Behr

The B. Manischewitz Company, LLC traces its beginnings back to the spring of 1888, when Rabbi Dov Behr Manischewitz opened a small Matzo bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A humble beginning

It was largely from his spiritual concerns that he set out to make matzo or unleavened bread for Passover, first for his family and a few friends, but soon for many of the devout Jews of the city. His bakery soon evolved into a successful business, innovative and prosperous––though never inattentive to the spiritual needs of its customers.

From small bakery to booming business

By the end of the century, demand for his matzo had become so great that Rabbi Manischewitz turned to the use of gas-fired ovens, replacing the older coal stoves being used by other Jewish bakers. The newer ovens allowed for much more careful control of the baking speed, insuring a consistent and standard quality to the matzos.
He also introduced portable traveling-tunnel ovens, and was the first to package his matzos for shipment to places beyond the immediate neighborhood of his bakery. He even began shipping his matzos overseas, to such diverse places as England, Japan, France, Hungary, Egypt and New Zealand. His bright, clean bakery would become a model for future kosher bakeries, both in America and abroad.

Matzo on the move

In 1932, the company built a second factory. Located in Jersey City, New Jersey, the plant quickly became the model for all new machine-made matzo bakeries worldwide. Closer to a much larger Jewish population than that of Cincinnati, the new factory also made distribution of the company’s product more efficient and quickly enlarged its customer base. The Manischewitz label was soon dominant in ethnic grocery stores and delicatessens in the larger East Coast cities. Thanks to the technology and efficiency of the New Jersey factory, Manischewitz was able to close down the Cincinnati facility altogether.

Same quality, more quantity

In 1940, Manischewitz produced its first Tam Tam cracker. It signaled the initial departure from its line of matzo products. About the same time, in a licensing arrangement, Manischewitz wines began to be sold throughout the country.
In 1954, the company purchased a processing plant located in Vineland, New Jersey. The Vineland facility, which has now ceased operations, manufactured all of the company’s canned and jarred products, including old familiar favorites like gefilte fish, chicken soup and borscht. The plant was primarily a hand-pack processing operation stressing careful attention to quality and flexibility. Workers there packed about 2,000,000 lbs. of fish and 1,000,000 lbs. of beets each year.

Marathon Monday and the Scream Tunnel

• The loudest Scream Tunnel ever, thanks to some 2000 Wellesley students, alums, and friends with the help of 250 megaphones and 150 cowbells
• Wellesley women greeting runners with cheers, kisses, and 800 signs that were requested by runners through Facebook.
• An art installation of thousands of origami hummingbirds—symbols of peace handmade by students and Wellesley town residents as part of the Boston Better project—along the Scream Tunnel portion of the marathon route.

About the Scream Tunnel – A Tradition as Old as the Marathon Itself

The first Boston Marathon was run in 1897, just a year after the first modern Olympics were held—and 22 years after Wellesley College admitted its first students. The College is around the halfway point on the marathon route. In the first race, Wellesley students are reported to have cheered on a particular favorite (a Harvard student), thus setting a precedent for vociferous support for the runners. That support continued every year, and soon turned into tradition, now known as the Scream Tunnel. The ritual gained momentum in the 1970s when women were at last allowed to officially run the race.
