Education is one of the principal means to build a culture of peace.

2024 Theme: Cultivating a Culture of Peace

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.

In that declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

In a world with rising geopolitical tensions and protracted conflicts, there has never been a better time to remember how the UN General Assembly came together in 1999 to lay out the values needed for a culture of peace. These include: respect for life, human rights and fundamental freedoms; the promotion of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation; commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; and adherence to freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations.

In follow-up resolutions, the General Assembly recognized further the importance of choosing negotiations over confrontation and of working together and not against each other.

The Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) starts with the notion that “wars begin in the minds of men so it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed”. It is this notion that framed the theme and logo of this year’s observance of the International Day of Peace. The ideas of peace, the culture of peace, need to be cultivated in the minds of children and communities through formal and informal education, across countries and generations.

The International Day of Peace has always been a time to lay down weapons and observe ceasefires. But it now must also be a time for people to see each other’s humanity. Our survival as a global community depends on that.

Background

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

GNC, NYC Mayor’s Office, Corporations and Sponsors will serve as the host for the 3 to 6 hour Worldwide LIVE Broadcast for Peace Day. Incorporated in the broadcast will be video feeds from all 7 Continents of the World sharing “Actions for Peace,” Creation of Human Peace Signs and Concerts/Events throughout the world and that evening in NY with Country and Faith Based Leaders & Peace Messengers.

4. GNC will produce a Celebrity Concert Broadcast on the Evening of 9/21. Funding for nonprofits for “lifesaving” work with WATER, will be a focus for the concert.

5. GNC Pause the World for Peace has experience to create this major event, along with some of the best production people in the business who produce Super Bowl, Great Lawn Concerts, Madison Square, Facebook events, along with award winning public relations. . HRH Prince Frederick von Saxe-Lauenberg’s family is literally related to every Royal Family in Europe, and he shares a common ancestor with Queen Elizabeth II in King Henry II.

Frederick who lives for part of the year in The Netherlands and also has a UK base in Cheshire – has been involved in peace activism since the early 1980’s, and is the Founder and President of Children of the World 2000, a not for profit organisation supported by the International Peace Bureau and UNESCO.

He is patron of several NGOs including the Earth Focus Foundation in Switzerland, the Lady Geertruide School Project in Haiti and the World Peace Gardens Network.

After leaving university the prince joined the family firm, an import-export business, and was also involved in publishing, travel writing and photography. His present work is as a World Peace Emissary and he is a Fellow of the International Institute of Peace Studies & Global Philosophy.

We met with the prince at the UN General Assembly in the Fall of 2002 together with Dame Jane Goodall a UN Messenger for Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall and Roots n’ Shoots initiative.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) strives to promote peace and security among nations through education, science, and culture. Its main concern is to foster and maintain intellectual solidarity.

The United States was an important part of the creation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that was founded after World War II on 16 November 1945 to contribute to peace and security.

Some of our media initiatives include creating poetic and musical albums, documentary films, and a world-wide community that will exchange ideas and information focused on bringing about World Peace through individual responsibility, Education, and helping each other. We endeavor to raise awareness of environmental and humanitarian crisis and find actionable solutions. We are reaching out to all people and organizations from around the world to join in our vision.

One of our plans for the album and film is to pair up artists who live in opposing countries for collaborations that go beyond politics, religion and borders. UNESCO and Good News Corporation Partner to Celebrate
The UN International Day of Peace

NEW YORK, NY: The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world on September 21. Established in 1981 by the unanimous United Nations resolution 36/37, the General Assembly declared a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”

Director General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, sees this partnership as an important opportunity to raise awareness, especially among young people. “UNESCO is honored to partner with Good News Corporation, whose mission is to use events and media to strengthen the United Nations International Day of Peace message,” she said, adding, “This is part of our mandate, and clearly stated in the preamble of our constitution that since wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the defenses of peace must be constructed.”

The Peace Day Party, in partnership with UNESCO, starts at 1045am-12:15pm, to be followed by other special Vigil for Peace performances.
New York City Schools – Wednesday, September 21 (The International Day of Peace). The Board of Education Respect for All Program joins the Peace Day program.

Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations in New York welcomed her guests to a Salon d’Ete & Musical Soiree. Katalin Bogyay was born in Szekesfehervah, Hungary. The former Hungarian resident of UNESCO General Conference (2011- 2013) and Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Hungary to UNESCO (2009-2014) was educated in Budapest, Hungary and London, U.K. She has also led a career of international television broadcaster, film producer and writer. Katalin Bogyay is an active promoter of music, a founding member of the Liszt Academy Network, based in London, and a board member of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the oldest Orchestra of Hungary, founded by Ferenc Erkel.

Our evening started with a private showing of an art exhibition by Lehel Urmenyi-Haaarof which included his famous “Up There the Paradise” an oil on canvas in pink and red. The next event was a concert by pianist composer and artist Chau-Giang T. Nguyen and the Rising Stars of the Budapest Opera House.

Chau-Giang T. Nguyen introduced us to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Siloti Prelude in B Minor and Ferenc Liszt’s Rhapsody #11 in A Minor. Born in Hanoi, Viet Nam, Chau-Giang held her first performance at the Hanoi Opera House. She later studied at the Hanoi College of Music and Fine Arts and continued her musical training in New York at the Julliard School for Piano Repertoire and later at the Manhattan School of Music. Chau-Giang has played solo performances at Steinway Hall and Disney Hall as well as Lincoln Center in New York City. Her gown by Maggie Norris was inspired by Ferenc Liszt.

Soprano Ildiko Szakacs, Baritone Csaba Szegedi and Pianist Renate Rohlfing, Rising Stars of the Budapest Opera House gave us a performance entitled ”From Distant Mountains” and “The Recruiting Song” an excerpt from Hary Janos. The last beautiful piece was a duet from the folk opera Hary Janos entitled “This Side of the Tisza.”

Ildiko Szakacs (soprano) soloist of the Hungarian State Opera House graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. She has toured in a number of European countries as well as Canada and USA. In 2007 Ms. Szakacs gave a solo concert at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Csaba Szegedi (baritone) is one of Budapest Opera’s lyric baritones. In 2008, he was contracted to work for the Hungarian State Opera. Mr. Szegedi made his debut in two leading roles: Figaro – Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Creon- Haydn’s L’anima del filosofo.

Renate Rohlfing (piano) has performed with some of the world’s leading artists including James Conlon, Anna Netrebko and John Adams. Her critically acclaimed piano trio LONGLEASH performed live on WUOL radio in Kentucky and the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival in Norway.

The final event of the evening was a Hungarian buffet dinner.

Oscar winning actor, social activist and UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, Forest Whitaker will introduce His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Grammy ¬nominee Aloe Blacc will pay tribute to the 14th Dalai Lama with a musical performance.“We are honored to host His Holiness the Dalai Lama at this crucial moment in history. With domestic and global challenges calling for newfound cooperation, we look for inspiration from His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a tireless advocate for compassionate action for our shared humanity. ” said Michael Trainer, Founder of the Peak Mind Foundation hosting the event.

“As His Holiness the Dalai Lama says, “Peace in the world depends on peace in the individual. Each of us has to make the attempts to find it,” quoted Kalden Lodoe, event co-chair. He further stated that, “His Holiness believes not only do we inherently possess the potential for compassion, but that the basic nature of human beings is gentleness.”

The event, co-¬created by Kalden Lodoe, Michael Trainer and Andrea Fennewald will be held at Rancho Los Lomas in Southern California. Tickets go on sale today starting at $50.
