Jeff Bezos and Fiancée Lauren Sánchez Are Donating $60M to Restore Land Across US

The donation is part of the billionaire’s promise to eventually funnel $10 billion into climate-related efforts.

Billionaire Jeff Bezos is making progress on the decade-long climate pledge he first made in 2020. Alongside his fiancée Lauren Sánchez, the Amazon (AMZN) founder earlier this week unveiled a $60 million grant to help restore 1.6 million acres of land across the U.S. The donation comes from the Bezos Earth Fund, a climate commitment Bezos initially established in 2020 that is expected to dole out a total of $10 billion for environmental solutions by the end of this decade.

The grant will aid the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) as it protects and improves the management of land across grasslands in the nation’s Northern Great Plains and longleaf pine forests in the Southeast U.S. “America’s landscapes are treasures that reflect the very heart of our country,” said Bezos in a statement. “By restoring these grasslands and forests, we’re safeguarding their natural beauty for future generations.”

The Bezos Earth Fund has previously provided NFWF, the country’s largest conservation foundation, with $90 million in funding to restore some 2.7 million acres. Its new grant will build upon that to help 80 to 100 different local projects across more than a dozen U.S. states focused on supporting at-risk species and ecosystems throughout the next two years.

According to the billionaire’s philanthropic organization, these projects will range from boosting populations of black-footed ferrets and gopher tortoises, planting native trees and grasses, and prescribing burning in longleaf forests. “This new phase of work with NFWF will help bring life back to vital U.S. landscapes, said Sánchez, who serves as vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, in a statement.

David Burke (born February 27, 1962) is an American chef and restaurateur, known for his appearance on the reality TV program Iron Chef America.

Born in Brooklyn NY and raised in Hazlet, New Jersey, Burke is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and was a student at Culinary Institute Lenôtre in Plaisir, France. Burke has worked with chefs in France and New York such as Pierre Troisgros, George Blanc, Marc Meneau, Daniel Boulud, Charlie Palmer and Waldy Malouf. When Burke was 26, he received 3 stars from the New York Times at River Café. Burke was then chosen by his peers to represent the US at The International Culinary Competition, where he won France’s Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplome d’Honneur. Burke also won the Nippon Award for Excellence from the government of Japan, for overall skill and technique. Burke remained at The River Café until 1992.

Career

In 1992, Burke opened the Park Avenue Café with Smith & Wollensky CEO Alan Stillman, becoming vice president of culinary development for the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group four years later. In 2003, Burke branched out on his own to start his first proprietary restaurant, davidburke & donatella. Since then, he has set up establishments in Chicago, Foxwoods Casino (CT), Las Vegas and in Rumson, NJ, as well as New York City.

As the principal of David Burke Hospitality Management, he operates or oversees the culinary direction of 20 restaurants in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, and in Saudi Arabia. In May 2022 Burke purchased the Dixie Lee Bakery in Keansburg, NJ.

Burke has appeared on television, including two seasons of Top Chef Masters, a guest spot on the Every Day with Rachael Ray show, NBC’s TODAY Show and Bloomberg’s small-business television series “The Mentor”. He has published two cookbooks, Cooking With David Burke (1999) and David Burke’s New American Classics (2006) co-written by Judith Choate.

Burke was featured once during the second season of Iron Chef America in 2005, he lost to Bobby Flay. In 2010, he was a competitor on the second season of Top Chef Masters, but did not move on to the Champions’ Rounds.

Burke also competed on Top Chef Masters Season 5. He was eliminated on Episode 9 in the Teacher Tribute challenge with his Bittersweet Chocolate Soufflé with Orange Peel & Raspberry Sauce.

At the BLT Prime in the Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C., Burke has cooked steak for President Donald Trump, and disputed allegations that the President ate his steak with ketchup. He was rumored to be under consideration for the post of White House Executive Chef, but has said that he would likely not be interested in the position.

Since 1918, the U.S. Warrant Officer has stood alongside our most successful military leaders as trusted advisors and mentors. As keepers of the Army’s technical systems, the Warrant Officer role has evolved from humble beginnings as mine planters in the Army Coast Artillery Corps of World War I to serving in more than 40 unique occupation specialties. These include ground forces, aviation, intelligence, engineering, and more. This July, the Warrant Officer cohort is celebrating its 106th anniversary.

Of all the positions of authority and responsibility, that of Command Chief Warrant Officer is probably the least known. However, this is a critical position within all branches of the military —especially within the Army Reserve — because the Warrant Officer is a steady presence with expert knowledge that helps the total Army achieve its mission. Warrant Officers are innovative integrators of emerging technologies, dynamic teachers, confident warfighters, and developers of specialized teams of Soldiers.

Although they make up less than three percent of total Army strength, Warrant Officers are responsible for training Soldiers, organizing and advising on missions, and advancing within their career specialties. The Warrant Officer cohort is comprised of more than 26,000 men and women of the active Army and Reserve components.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 LaShon White, Command Chief Warrant Officer of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, as he discusses the invaluable role Warrant Officers fulfill. CW5 White first enlisted in the Army in 1986 and this year became the first Black Command Chief Warrant Officer of the Army Reserve.
