Everyone knew Olga was a princess, even if one of her own devising. Princess Olga is her fictional memoir. Olga, beginning at age 97, dreams of her childhood in Port of Spain, untangling a family mystery of political intrigue: why her Venezuelan family, living in luxury, fled Trinidad for Harlem in 1924.

Olga was named, she claimed, in 1913, by and for a real Russian Princess:Princess Olga, sister of the reigning Tsar Nicholas. Olga, a babe in arms, was onboard ship going from Margarita, Venezuela to Port of Spain in the Crown Colony of Trinidad.

Port of Spain was where Olga first learned her power as Princess.

Except when she is ushered out of bed, or to the dining room table, Olga, beginning at age 97, dreams back to her childhood in Port of Spain. Her family was intimately connected to the Venezuelan regime; her uncle was its Consul General in Trinidad; her father worked for the dictatorship in the gold fields of Amazonas and most of his brothers worked for the regime, as well. In her dreams, she untangles a mystery of political intrigue and why her family fled Trinidad. She discovers the important part she played, causing her family, living in luxury, to abandon Port of Spain for Harlem in 1924.

She then dreams of her arrival in New York, and of her eventual triumph in her new country: a scholarship to Mount Holyoke, marriage into an old literary family, (Hawthorne and Smyth) but, until she receives a steamer trunk full of cash, she is still connected to the regime in Venezuela.

Direct from Havana, Orquesta Aragón, is one of Cuba’s grandest and most enduring charanga Bands. The “Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestra of Cuban music,” is a national treasure on the island and have performed worldwide for over 60 years. Orquesta Aragón has been a cornerstone of Cuban culture for seven decades, playing danzón, son, cha-cha-chá, rumba and their own styles. Their Afro-Latin innovations shaped the evolution of Cuban music for decades and they have been credited for inspiring New York’s mambo scene in the 50s, making an indelible mark on African music in the 70s, and influencing a who’s who of NY’s Latin music icons like Fania All-Stars’ Johnny Pacheco and Mambo King Tito Puente. Since 1939 Aragón has kept its focus, spreading irresistible Cuban rhythms around the world.

Join us as we celebrate the would-be 50th anniversary of Café au Go Go, with original footage of artists performing at the Café in ‘Seven Years Underground: A 60s Tale’ directed by Jason Solomon, son of the original Café owners, Howard and Elly Solomon. A panel discussion will follow about the origination and history of the Café as music venue with David Amram, Terri Thal, Matt Umanov and moderator Ashley Kahn. Following a brief intermission,Steve Cuiffo performs Café alum Lenny Bruce’s material verbatim and in character.David Amram, the “Renaissance Man of American Music” (Boston Globe), was a frequent performer and friend of Café au Go Go since its opening 50 years ago. As a multi-instrumental musician versed in over 35 instruments, he introduced the French horn to jazz (along with Julius Watkins) more than sixty years ago while playing with many of the 1950`s jazz legends, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton and Oscar Pettiford. Some of his other musical collaborators include Bob Dylan, Tito Puente, Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, Jack Kerouac, Odetta, Leonard Bernstein, Richie Havens, Arthur Miller, Langston Hughes, Joe Papp, Elia Kazan, Antonio Carolos Jobim, Patti Smith, Paddy Chayefsky, Steve Martin, Archibald MacLeish, John McEuen and Johnny Depp. Amram has conducted 75 of the world’s great orchestras, and composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, two operas, 23 Broadway scores, and 21 film scores, including the classic films Splendor in the Grass, The Manchurian Candidate, and Pull My Daisy. He is also a progenitor of international indigenous folk music to America over the past half century and has been referred to as the “Father of World Music.” Amram has authored three books, and has written the forewords to new biographies of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Andrew Zuckerman’s book and feature film documentary Wisdom: The Greatest Gift One Generation Can Give to Another, features Mr. Amram as one of the World’s 50 Elder Thinkers and Doers. The symphonic live recording of Amram’s composition THIS LAND: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie, as conducted by David Amram with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will be released in April 2014, along with the DVD release of Lawrence Kraman’s feature length documentary film, DAVID AMRAM: The First 80 Years. Ashley Kahn is an author, educator, music journalist, and concert producer. A professor of music history and criticism at New York University who lectures at other institutions as well, his books include A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album, and Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. Kahn’s writing has generated two Grammy nominations, three ASCAP/Deems Taylor Awards, and two Book of the Year distinctions from the Jazz Journalists Association.

Terri Thal was well known in the vibrant Greenwich Village art scene of the 1960s. During that time, she was married to (and managed) Village folk legend Dave Van Ronk, who is the inspiration behind Joel and Ethan Coen’s movie Inside Llewyn Davis. She also managed other folksingers, including Bob Dylan (for a year), the Holy Modal Rounders, Maggie and Terre Roche and Paul Geremia. A recent article Thal wrote on Inside Llewyn Davis generated intense discussion in the music and film worlds about whether the movie accurately reflected the folk music scene of the 60s.

Matt Umanov is the founder of Matt Umanov Guitars on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Since 1965, his store has been a must-visit for any guitarist passing through New York City who can explore his eclectic collection of guitars, amps, pedals, and other accessories. Over the years, Umanov has become equally well known for his deep knowledge of the guitar and the history behind the instrument.

Café Au Go Go Revisited

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Iconic NYC Venue

Greenwich House Music School, located at 46 Barrow Street in the heart of the West Village, is proud to announce Café Au Go Go Revisited (CaGGR), a live performance festival commemorating the spirit and innovation of the short-lived yet legendary 1960s stage in celebration of the venue’s would-be 50th anniversary.

The series begins on February 24, with a special screening of Seven Years Underground, an intimate documentary on the history of Café Au Go Go directed by Jason Solomon. Mr. Solomon, son of Howard and Elly, the original owners of Café Au Go Go, will be on hand to present the film and speak about the rich history of the Café.

Café Au Go Go opened in February 1964 in the basement of 152 Bleecker Street and provided a stage for many of the greatest rock, jazz, folk and stand-up comedy performers of their era. A list of venue regulars reads like a who’s-who of the New York art and pop scene of the time: Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane, Oscar Brown Jr., Judy Collins, George Carlin, Linda Ronstadt, Richie Havens, Muddy Waters, Odetta, Richard Pryor and Stan Getz. The Café set the stage for the first New York performance of The Grateful Dead, hosted Jimi Hendrix and is indelibly linked to the infamous obscenity arrest of Lenny Bruce following his shows at the club.

“The Café Au Go Go Revisited festival pays homage to the ingenuity and imagination of our one-time neighbor,” says Rachel Black, Director of Greenwich House Music School, whose vision to honor this period of Greenwich Village’s artistic history led to the production of the festival. “That spirit is at the heart of the work we do at Greenwich House and is reflected in the line-up for this inaugural festival.”

Ms. Black has invited Jennie Wasserman, previously of Carnegie Hall and Joe’s Pub and currently a member of the programming team at Jazz at Lincoln Center, to book the Café Au Go Go Revisitedfestival. Ms. Wasserman is assembling an impressive line-up of artists covering the fields of jazz, blues, folk, chamber pop, americana and classic soul and R&B, reflecting the diversity of programming that made Café Au Go Go great. The complete Cafe Au Go Go Revisited lineup will be announced shortly.

Live performances begin March 6 and will continue every Thursday thereafter through April 24. Tickets to all shows are available in person at Greenwich House Music School or online at GreenwichHouse.org/music_school/index beginning in February. Performances are general admission, first come first seated, and open to all ages. Wine and light refreshments will be served at most shows.
