WHAT IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU MAY BE PART OF THE NATION’S POLLUTION PROBLEM?

Americans may not realize it but if they are tossing their prescription medicines in the household trash or flushing them down the toilet, they are actually adding to the nation’s pollution problem and potentially harming our critical natural resources.

After being flushed or poured down the drain, many medications pass through sewer and septic systems. Because these systems can’t always treat or remove all the medications, they may end up in streams, lakes, and groundwater. This can cause adverse effects in fish and other aquatic wildlife as well as unintentional human exposure to chemicals.

In addition to harming our environment, disposing of medication in the trash, makes it easier for drugs to fall into the wrong hands and continue the cycle of misuse.

A recent survey showed that Americans often hold on to their unused prescriptions for future use, for fear of their illness returning or because they don’t know how to get rid of them. In fact, 47% of Americans currently have 1-3 bottles of unused prescriptions in their medicine cabinet followed by 8% with 4-6 bottles, 2% with more than 10 bottles and 2% with 7-10 bottles.

With no knowledge of safe disposal practices, one in four (25%) Americans admit to flushing leftover/unused prescription drugs down the drain, and another 25% toss unused prescriptions in the trash.

But you can be part of the solution to this problem. There’s a helpful strategy easily available that can help: drug deactivation and disposal pouches. They’re a safe, effective choice that can be used to destroy and properly dispose of unused, unwanted, and expired medications. With the simple addition of tap water, any medications placed in a pouch are rendered harmless by its patented activated carbon technology. Then, the plant-based pouch is completely safe to dispose of in normal household trash, preventing contamination of landfills and water systems.

Nancy Devine, Verde Environmental Technologies Inc. Chief Operating Officer as she outlines what you can do to be greener at home beginning this Earth Day. She’ll also provide details on how to keep your medications from polluting the environment by using safe deactivation and disposal methods.

The UNSRC Aux Antilles Club was founded in 1990 by U.N. Haitian staff members who wanted to share their culture and that of other Caribbean countries with others. Since its existence, the Club has showcased countless talents from Haiti as well as from other countries. It has also been very present in helping raise funds for Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and recently for Japan. This gala is yet another event that the Club is organizing.

Tabou Combo. Tabou Combo is Haiti’s most famous group. For over 30 years, they have toured worldwide and are celebrated as the “Ambassadors of Kompa” – the popular Haitian dance rhythm sung in French, English, Spanish and Creole. Tabou Combo’s music is aimed squarely at the dance floor – mixing Haitian Meringue, Rara (vodoun percussion) with Kompa and elements of Brazilian music, Soukous and Funk. Their phenomenal popularity has given them an important standing in Haitian society and they use their lyrics to defend the poor people in their songs.

The gala is in support of Uni Haiti Phase 1 – the reconstruction of the sanitation facilities of l’Ecole la Rédemption, Uni Haiti’s partner school, in Léogâne, Haiti.

Dress code: black tie or business formal. Orphans International Worldwide (OIWW) is an approved 501(c)(3) I.R.S. tax-exempt charity. Its tax identification number is 26-1618712. A copy of its Annual Report may be obtained from OIWW or by writing the New York State Attorney General’s Charities Bureau, Attn.: FOIL Officer, 120 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10271.

The James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation honors Haiti and The needs of the world are vast, but so too are our many resources. One of humanity’s most valuable resources is young global leadership impacting positive social change, which this foundation endeavors to support. The Luce and Dudley families have had a long and historical commitment to youth, education, and social improvement in the United States and around the world. I aspire to continue this family tradition through the grants, awards, and publications of The James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation – playing a role, however humble, in bettering humanity. My goal is uplifting the worst of humanity while celebrating the best of humanity – especially the arts.
