STYROFOAMOM SCREENS AT NORTHERN VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE ~ APRIL 16, 2019

Arlington, VA – The Northern Virginia Community College will present “StyrofoamMom” as part of their Earth Day sustainable practices celebration.

Director Miriam Gennari will speak to students about her film and the elimination of single-use plastics and GoFundMe.com Campaign.

“The animator of the film deserves special recognition,” said Gennari.  “I sincerely would like to license the artwork into recyclable paper party cups to give meaning to our #hold the foam message.”

A1.  I WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MY COMMUNITY.

A2.   IT HAS BEEN 8 YEARS NOW AND I HAVE INTERVIEWED MORE THAN 500 GUESTS.

Q3. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO MAKE THE FILM STYROFOAMMOM?

A3.  AMAZON COMING INTO MY BACKYARD IN ARLINGTON AND THE REALIZATION THEY WERE GOING TO BE USING TONS OF STYROFOAM. 

Q4.  WHY STYROFOAM?

A4.  THE PROBLEM ISN’T STYROFOAM, BUT THE DISPOSAL OF IT AND THE FACT IT ISN’T RECYCLED AND DOESN’T BREAK DOWN IN LANDFILLS AND IN THE WATER.

Q5.  SO YOU ARE NOT OPPOSED TO STYROFOAM USE?

A5.  NO, ESPECIALLY IF I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ATLANTIC AND NEEDED A LIFE PRESERVER.  BUT WE TYPICALLY DON’T FUNCTION WITH THAT TYPE OF NECESSITY ON DRY LAND.

A6.  INTERESTING QUESTION. I SCREENED THE FILM AT A HEALTH FAIR AND THAT LED TO A YOGA STUDIO RECYCLING EFFORT TO CREATE PROPS OUT OF USED STYROFOAM AND AN ART EXHIBIT WITH NESPRESSO K-CUPS MADE FROM ALUMINUM. .

Q7.  RECENTLY YOUR FILM WAS TAKEN TO THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL TO SEEK DISTRIBUTION?

A7.  YES, WE HAD A PARTNERSHIP WITH a YOGA STUDIO -YOGA NATIONAL TO TAKE THE FILM TO CANNES, FRANCE. DELTA AIRLINES & AIR FRANCE GAVE US SUPPORT TO GET THERE. 

THE IDEA WAS TO SECURE ACQUISITION LISTS TO DISTRIBUTE OUR FILM FOR LICENSING AND SCREENING.   WE ALSO ARE WORKING ON PARTNERSHIPS WITH INDUSTRY.

Q8.  WHAT TYPES OF PARTNERSHIPS ARE YOU LOOKING TO DEVELOP?

A8.  FOR EXAMPLE, ONE GREAT PARTNER FOR US WOULD BE NESPRESSO BECAUSE THEY ARE LEADERS IN SUSTAINABILITY USING ALUMINUM K-CUPS INSTEAD OF PLASTIC WHICH THEY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO RECYCLE WITHIN THEIR STORES.

A9.  WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY AS A RESULT OF THE CANNES TRIP TO SCREEN THE FILM WITH PORPOISE ROBOTICS, A STEM EDUCATION NONPROFIT.  IT WAS FOUNDED BY DAVID GROBER OF MOTION PICTURE MARINE PRODUCTIONS.  GROBER WAS AWARDED AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT FOR A CAMERA THAT IS USED TO SELF LEVEL WHILE FILMING ON WATER.  IT HAS BEEN USED IN HARRY POTTER AND SURFING FILMS.  

Q10.  WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SINGLE-USE PLASTICS AND THE OCEAN?

A10.  THE OCEAN AND FISH ARE NOW AT RISK BECAUSE THE PLASTIC IS BEING CONSUMED BY THE FISH AND IN TURN BY HUMANS.  THE OCEANS ARE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY THE USE OF STYROFOAM IN THE WASTE STREAM AND SINGLE-USE PLASTICS THAT WIND UP THERE.

The chance to see David Richardson’s paintings in New York drew the creme de la creme of Gotham’s art establishment including gallerists Mark Murray, Cameron Shay, Andrew Miller and high powered collectors such as Brian Frasca and Leslie Barret.

They auctioned an original piece by artist, author, and retired marine Lieutenant Colonel David Richardson. The piece in question titled “Muscle Man,” which is acrylic and buck shot on plywood, also serves as the cover art for Lt. Col. Richardson’s debut novel War Story, due to be released by Permuted Press April 16th of this year.

Lt. Col. David Richardson also donated proceeds from the auction of his cover art to both GSI and SFTT to fund further treatment for service members and veterans with PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Lorraine Silvetz, M.S.W. and her husband, Robert Silvetz, M.D. donated treatment for 100 veterans at their clinic in Virginia between 2017-2018. Their goal is to bring the innovative protocol to the northeast where it is sorely needed.

New Campaign FindingtheWords.com Increases Awareness About Painful Intercourse Due to Menopause and Encourages Women to Speak Up to Their Doctors

 Academy Award-nominated actress Virginia Madsen (http://www.virginia-madsen.org) is never one to shy away from a conversation, even if the topic at first blush seems awkward or embarrassing. Impacting many women in the United States (U.S.), painful intercourse due to menopause is one of the most bothersome symptoms of a chronic and progressive medical condition called vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA).

“When I found out how many women don’t talk about their painful intercourse, I was surprised. It amazes me that in this day and age, when it seems there is no topic considered off limits, that so many postmenopausal women remain silent,” said Virginia Madsen. “It’s very important for women to know they’re not alone. The more women who are able to find the right words to begin this conversation, the more widespread attention we can bring to this topic.”

As an advocate for women, Madsen has teamed up with Shionogi Inc. to launch a new awareness and educational campaign, Finding the Words (visit: http://www.findingthewords.com), to inspire women to break their silence around this common but seldom discussed medical condition. A recent survey revealed that 44% of women indicated that they never discussed symptoms such as painful intercourse with a healthcare provider. One of the most common reasons cited for not discussing their symptoms is that they believed it was a natural part of aging (REVIVE).

“These days, about one-third of a woman’s life could be spent in her menopausal years. I’m a confidante to many of my close girlfriends and we talk a lot about what we are experiencing as our bodies change, and I can tell you that intimacy remains important to women at any age,” added Madsen.

“Painful intercourse due to menopause is a symptom of a real medical condition caused by physical changes of the vagina that lead to vaginal aging. Vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA) is a chronic and progressive medical condition caused by decreased estrogen levels. Declining estrogen levels during menopause can cause tissues of the vaginal lining to grow thinner and become more fragile. Menopause also causes increases in vaginal pH. These physiological signs that characterize aging of the vagina can lead to moderate to severe dyspareunia (painful intercourse) due to menopause.
