Illuminating A Taboo Cancer On the Rise, with a Primary Risk Factor That’s More Common Than You THINK

THIS SERIOUS, RARE, AND MISUNDERSTOOD CANCER HAS A PRIMARY RISK FACTOR THAT IS MORE PREVALENT THAN YOU MIGHT THINK. HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS OR HPV—A COMMON VIRUS TRANSMITTED BY SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT—IS THE NUMBER ONE RISK FACTOR FOR ANAL CANCER.1,2

MARCH IS ANAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. JOINING US TO SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TALKING OPENLY ABOUT THE RISK FACTORS AND SYMPTOMS OF THIS CANCER THAT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO TALK ABOUT ARE ANAL CANCER SPECIALIST, DR. PAUL ROMESSER [ROME-EH-SIR], AND LILLIAN KREPPEL [LILL-EE-IN KREH-PELL], ANAL CANCER SURVIVOR AND CO-FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE HPV CANCERS ALLIANCE.

BIO- Paul Romesser, MD

Colorectal and Anal Cancer Specialist

Dr. Paul Romesser is a board-certified radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of colorectal and anal cancer. He is also actively involved in anal cancer clinical trials. Dr. Romesser is passionate about helping patients navigate the complexities of cancer care and create personalized treatment plans tailored to their needs.

BIO-Lillian Kreppel

Co-Founder and Executive Director of HPV Cancers Alliance

Lillian is an anal cancer “thriver,” patient advocate and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of HPV Cancers Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of human papilloma virus (HPV) and the cancers it can cause. She was diagnosed with HPV-related anal cancer in 2017 and has been a passionate activist and changemaker for the HPV and anal cancer community ever since.

In her own words, “No one should die from HPV – education and self-advocacy can save your life. HPV desperately needs a voice. I AM THAT VOICE!”

The bottom line: Get informed and speak up about risk factors, symptoms, and better care at all stages

Anal cancer can go undetected as it shares many of the same symptoms as common, non-cancer conditions.1 Further, people experiencing symptoms can be embarrassed to discuss them with their doctor and unaware of the key risk factors for anal cancer, which may lead to a delayed diagnosis. Open and honest communication is critical with this cancer, as early diagnosis may help improve outcomes.2

The #1 risk factor for anal cancer is human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus transmitted by skin-to-skin contact.2,3 Other key facts about HPV include:

Nearly all sexually active people will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.4
A healthy immune system will rid most HPV infections within two years before they cause precancer cell changes.4
Approximately 90% of anal cancers are associated with HPV infection.5
While anal cancer is rare, its incidence is on the rise.6
Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCAC) is the most common type of anal cancer, accounting for about 90% of all anal cancers.7

On Wednesday, March 19, in recognition of Anal Cancer Awareness Month, Lillian Kreppel, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the HPV Cancers Alliance (hpvca.org), and colorectal and anal cancer specialist, Dr. Paul Romesser, is going to discuss their personal and expert perspectives about the condition and the importance of open conversations with healthcare providers at all stages of the journey.

Together, Lillian and Dr. Romesser aim to raise national awareness of anal cancer and its connection to HPV, as well as inspire more open and comfortable communication and better care at all stages. No one is alone in this journey.

Despite our hopes, respiratory virus season is not over yet. The rate of acute respiratory illness causing people to seek healthcare remains high, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

While viruses like the flu, RSV and COVID can impact people anytime, most people associate these viruses with colder and winter months – and while winter may be loosening its grip – these viruses are not.

Who is most vulnerable to respiratory illnesses?

Immunocompromised people. You qualify as “immunocompromised” if you have an illness that weakens your immune system, such as cancer, an autoimmune disease, or have had an organ transplant. You may also qualify if your immune system works well. but are being treated for another condition suppresses your immune response.

We all know someone who is immunocompromised and for these people, COVID can be deadly.

Approximately 3% of the U.S adult population is considered immunocompromised and are more susceptible to severe outcomes and complications of infectious disease.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself against respiratory infections includes:

Vaccines are the recommended approach

However, vaccines are shown to leave immunocompromised people exposed and need extra protection

Talk to your doctor about a COVID protection approach

Cover your cough or sneeze

On Thursday, February 27th, Dr. Amesh Adalja, Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, will be available to discuss the peaking of the respiratory illness season and how everyone can protect themselves. He’ll also discuss protecting immunocompromised people from COVID-19.

Increasing the Risk for Transmission
Hepatitis A is a highly-infectious virus that affects the liver and can lead to sickness, hospitalization and even death, in some cases. Infection with the virus can make someone very sick. Twenty-six US states are currently experiencing active hepatitis A outbreaks. In the current outbreaks, over 60% of people who contract it have required hospitalization.

https://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/

October is Liver Awareness Month and a great time to talk about hepatitis A vaccination with your doctor or pharmacist. Since 2017, substantial increases in hepatitis A have occurred, with nearly 40,000 cases reported. While people who use drugs, people experiencing homelessness, and men who have sex with men are most often at risk, nearly one third of people with hepatitis A have no identified risk factor.
Hepatitis A patient Stan was 66 years old and in the best shape of his life, having just completed a half-marathon, when he contracted hepatitis A and his life was changed. He believes he contracted the virus through food at a restaurant. His symptoms began as mild and sporadic and felt like the flu, but as his symptoms of nausea continued he was rushed to the ER and told that his liver was failing. Stan underwent a liver transplant and fortunately is doing well today, but regrets not knowing that vaccination for hepatitis A is available.
85% adults in the US have not been vaccinated for Hepatitis A; creating opportunities for infection, as it can be transmitted person-to-person or through contaminated food or drink.
Foodborne outbreaks of the virus can occur when someone eats fresh and frozen food products that are contaminated with Hepatitis A. It can be transmitted where food is prepared and served by food handlers who may be infected with the virus.
Stories from real people affected by hepatitis A remind us why everyone, not just high-risk groups or travelers, should discuss vaccination with their healthcare provider.
On Thursday, September 30th , Stan and Dr. Leah Smith, Pharmacist and Vaccine Educator at GSK discuss the virus, vaccination and share a personal perspective on the impact of the illness.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING TESTED FOR HEPATITIS C
***CDC now recommends universal hepatitis C screening for all U.S. adults***

MAY IS HEPATITIS AWARENESS MONTH AND TODAY WE ARE SPEAKING WITH HEP C SURVIVOR AND ADVOCATE FOR THE COMMUNITY, KAREN. IN 2010 KAREN LEARNED THAT HER LIVER WAS FAILING, AND SHE WAS LATER DIAGNOSED WITH THE HEPATITIS C VIRUS.

FORTUNATELY, SHE MADE A FULL RECOVERY, AND TODAY SHE’S ALL ABOUT HELPING OTHERS. KAREN JOINS US NOW TO DISCUSS WHAT IS HEP C, WHY SCREENING IS SO IMPORTANT AND WHY EVERYONE DESERVES TO AND CAN BE FREE OF HEP C.

KAREN BIO: No last time due to patient confidentiality rules

Karen offers a no nonsense approach to living with hepatitis C. A Hepatitis C survivor, Karen created a liver loving diet and lifestyle that allows her to create awareness and advocate for the hep C community. After receiving successful treatment for hep C in 2012, Karen began a website, ihelpc.com, to encourage and inform other patients by talking about her experience living with liver disease. Karen has also authored The Liver Loving Diet to provide health and nutritional tips for those with liver disease.

Hepatitis C, or hep C, is a viral infection that can cause chronic inflammation and scarring in the liver, leading to long-term health problems. Chronic hep C is also the most common reason for liver transplants in the United States.[i] But that’s not the only reason the virus is considered a major public health problem. Among 2.3 million people living in the US with hep C, 40% don’t even know they have it. [ii],[iii]
Many people who are infected with chronic hep C don’t experience symptoms or have non-specific symptoms, like chronic fatigue. They can be asymptomatic for several decades. And someone infected with the virus can spread it whether they have symptoms or not. 1
Karen, a hep C survivor and advocate for the community, didn’t feel any symptoms of her hep C until after a bike ride, when her feet became numb and her body was swollen. The following day she was admitted to the hospital with liver failure and ultimately was diagnosed with hep C. Karen eventually felt empowered by the knowledge of her diagnosis and decided to take the step to treat her hep C.

There are many factors which could lead a patient to refrain from getting tested for hep C. These may include stigma, not experiencing symptoms, lack of access to treatment or fear of side effects.[iv],[v] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends one-time testing for all adults over 18 years of age, pregnant women during each pregnancy and those younger than 18 if at risk. 1

Since May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to discuss the importance of getting tested for the infection and find out more about its symptoms.

CURRENT OUTBREAK:
UNDERSTAND YOUR RISK FOR HEPATITIS A
AN INFECTIOUS LIVER DISEASE

LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS PREVENTABLE DISEASE – FROM SYMPTOMS TO RISK FACTORS – AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VACCINATION

Dr. Len Friedland, practicing physician, vaccine researcher and Vice President and Director, Scientific Affairs and Public Health, Vaccines, GSK

BACKGROUND:
October is National Liver Awareness Month, an important time to learn about vaccine-preventable forms of viral hepatitis, including Hepatitis A, a highly-infectious virus that affects the liver and can lead to sickness, hospitalization and even death, in some cases.[i] The US is currently experiencing a nationwide Hepatitis A outbreak, yet awareness and vaccination among adults remains shockingly low (~15%).[ii] After a consistent 20-year downward trend in cases, in 2017, Hepatitis A cases spiked nationwide, with 27 states experiencing active outbreaks in 2020. During this time, there have been more than 34,000 reported cases, with over 61% of infected people hospitalized, and 333 deaths, making it the largest person-to-person Hepatitis A virus outbreak in the postvaccine era.[iii],[iv]

DID YOU KNOW?

Anyone who isn’t vaccinated can be at risk for Hepatitis A as it can be spread person-to-person or through contaminated food or drink.1

People with Hepatitis A may not know that they are infected and can transmit the disease to others.1

Most people in the US have not been vaccinated for Hepatitis A; creating opportunities for infection and spread. Additionally, more than half of older adults have never heard of or are unfamiliar with a vaccine for Hepatitis A (56%).[v]

Hepatitis A vaccination isn’t only for higher risk groups or people traveling to certain parts of the world. The general public can come into contact with the virus when traveling even within the US and through contaminated food. For example, where food is prepared and served by food handlers infected with the Hepatitis A virus.1

The CDC advises that anyone who wishes to be protected against Hepatitis A speak to their doctor or pharmacist about vaccination. Most commercial plans are required to cover vaccines recommended by the CDC and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

Raising awareness about Hepatitis A and vaccination is more important than ever.

Immunization rates for most vaccines across all age groups have dropped significantly during COVID-19 and adult vaccination rates have dropped by over 80 percent since the peak of the pandemic.[vi] Everyone, not just those at high risk, can talk to their doctor or pharmacist about all vaccine-preventable forms of viral hepatitis and other CDC-recommended vaccines that may be needed during their next well visit. It is important to stay up-to-date on recommended vaccines to prevent unnecessary sickness and hospitalization, especially during the pandemic.[vii]

For more information, visit CDC.gov/hepatitis/hav.

Good News Planet Hepatitis Q&A

If someone has fatty liver, is it even more important to get the vaccination for hepatitis A and hepatitis B?

When living with fatty liver disease, it’s important to prevent any additional sources of potential liver damage. The US Centers for Disease Control and prevention recommends hepatitis A and B vaccination for people living with chronic liver diseases, including fatty liver disease and hepatitis C.1

What is the difference between Hepatitis A and B and how do you recognize it? Is there a different treatment?

Hepatitis A and B are both viruses that affect the liver, and can cause serious illness or even death, but are transmitted in different ways and can cause a different course of illness.1 Hepatitis A is highly infectious, and is transmitted through person-to-person contact or contaminated food/drink, and usually causes a short-term illness.1 Hepatitis B is transmitted from mother to child during birth, blood, or through sexual contact, and can cause short or long-term illness, depending on the age of someone when they contract it.[viii] In the current outbreak, Hepatitis A has been associated with a high rate of hospitalization (nationally 60% of cases), with treatment mainly administered to combat unpleasant symptoms.1,4 Short-term treatment of hepatitis B may be similar, but long-term hepatitis B infections may require ongoing antiviral treatment to manage the virus and prevent liver damage.[ix]

Can you get both [Hep A and B] vaccinations the same day and who gives this vaccination?

Hepatitis A and B vaccinations can be administered by a physician or pharmacist and can be given at the same time. The hepatitis A vaccine is a 2-dose vaccine series, for children 1 year of age and older, and adults, that can be completed in 6 months.[x] The hepatitis B vaccine is available in a 2-dose series for adults 18 years of age and older, which can be completed in 1 month, or a 3-dose series for all ages, which can be completed in 6 months.[xi] There is also a hepatitis A and B combination vaccine series available for adults 18 years of age and older, to provide protection against both viruses. While routine infant vaccination has been recommended for hepatitis A since 2006, and hepatitis B since 1991, most adults in the US are not protected against these viruses.[xii],[xiii] Nationally, only about 20% of adults 18 years of age and older have received even 1 dose of the hepatitis A vaccine and only about 25% of adults 19 years of age and older have completed the hepatitis B vaccine series.[xiv],[xv]

Three tips all organ recipients and their caregivers should know for monitoring organ health, particularly during COVID-19

Approximately 80 people undergo organ transplants each day – these recipients are presented with unique challenges during the pandemic that require them to make substantial changes in ways that they receive medical care from their healthcare professionals. Organ recipients are at higher risk of contracting the virus because the immunosuppressive drugs they take to prevent organ rejection also limit their body’s ability to ward off infection.

As restrictions start to lift, and the world seems more like normal, existing transplant patients would benefit from practical tips that help them remain informed and hyper-vigilant about safety. And as organ transplant surgeries begin to resume at centers around the country, transplant professionals can provide guidance to new patients regarding staying healthy in our “new normal” environment.

Leading transplant surgeon Adam W Bingaman, MD, PhD, Director of Abdominal Organ Transplantation at Methodist Hospital/Specialty and Transplant, is on the front lines during this crisis in his community and is available to provide tips to both patients and their caregivers about keeping safe, during the “new normal.”

•	Seek Care with Telemedicine: Consult with your doctor about available telemedicine programs. Also known as telehealth, telemedicine uses phones, tablets and laptops for virtual medical appointments, remote but in real-time, with healthcare professionals.
•	Evaluate Caregivers’ Risk: In addition to transplant patients being hyper-vigilant of their own health, they must also monitor their caregivers’ exposure to the public. If a caregiver needs to go into public areas– for example, if they are an essential worker – then they should take necessary precautions.
•	Inquire About Home Blood Draws: Transplant patients undergo frequent blood tests in labs or hospitals to monitor for the health of their transplanted organs. There are at-home services that A service allows patients to receive home blood draws from trained technicians called phlebotomists to access for organ rejection:
•	Dr. Adam Bingaman, will be available to discuss what transplant patients can expect during COVID-19 and to share helpful tips on ways to protect a transplanted organ. Additionally, CareDx CEO Peter Maag – the company behind RemoTraC – is available to discuss widespread usage of the service during COVID-19, and the company’s ongoing commitment to addressing patient needs.

As COVID-19 Cases Continue to Increase in Many US States, Doctors Are Looking to Prepare
Families for What They Can Better Control – The Seasonal Flu

PrepareforFlu.com

While the number of people infected by the flu each year fluctuates based on a variety of factors such as virus strains and characteristics of the person being vaccinated, the CDC findings suggest that about 8% of the United States population contracts symptomatic flu illness every year. However, this flu season will be different than those of the past, as this year the US is also navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many questions and anxieties remain surrounding the global pandemic, including when a vaccine will be available, whether a second wave is coming, or even when the first wave will end. Amid increased uncertainty, and as a result of the impacts of both the flu and COVID-19, doctors are actively preparing their communities to help stay protected and healthy.

This year, an important action that parents can take for their families is to talk to a healthcare provider about getting a flu vaccine. In fact, the CDC is encouraging flu vaccination for the upcoming season, now more than ever, to help reduce the burden on the healthcare system. While some people regularly get a flu vaccine, others do not. There are several vaccine options available, even for those who prefer a needle-free option. The CDC does not recommend one flu vaccine over another. It is important to speak to your healthcare provider to determine which vaccine is right for you and your loved ones.

Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, MD, Associate Division Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine will discuss how parents can prepare their families for this year’s flu season, while navigating alongside a global pandemic.
